Are all dachsie's killers of toys? My Abbie loves to find the squeaker in her toy and destroy it. Stuffing and material everywhere. Its like a quest for her. This must be their nature. I almost comical to watch her attack her stuffed animal. This only inhances her funny personality. Don't think of taking it away from her. She will try and run up my legs to get to it. I too am looking for indistructible toys or maybe some that will last longer than 2 days. I am going to PetSmart after work today to get her a Xmas present for under the tree. Don't you just love their little personalities? I am so in love with my doxie my family thinks I'm crazy. Can't help it though.

Yup...a lot of dachsies are "toy killers" as they are "badger" dogs and are bred to hunt. Chief destroys a stuffed toy in a matter of seconds. The best toys to get these guys are Kongs or nylabones.
Good luck :)

We have alot of old stuffed toys that have been destuffed by Willie. What i was thinking of doing since we spend so much money on them is this : i am going to take all the stuffing out of them except around the head and sew them back up. Leaveing in the squeaker and then there will be a new toy again without the worry of the stuffing... Willie has his "benny bear" that is like that so i figure why throw them away if they are still in good shape.. We have a garbage bag full of new toys waiting for Willie to play with.

No not all dachsunds are toy killers. One of my folks dogs (I think Candy) got a stuffed ping dog whan she was just a tiny pup. Her pinky was her best buddy it went every where with her she slept with it. She had it here entire life and the cloth became very thin. Any time pinky got a new hole in it Candy would bring it to one of us put it near our feet or on our lap and look at you with said eyes. She wanted you to sew up pinky's wounds. Once you gout out the needle and thread she would get excited wathing you mend pinky and when you finished and handed pinky back to her she would take it to a safe place where she sould lick the new stitches and then nap with pinky firmly under her chin.

I bought a canvas covered toy for Abbie for Christmas thinking this will maybe be a little more durable. My husband and I bet that it would take her 30 minutes to get into it and start pulling the stuffing out. Wrong!!! It took her exactly 10 minutes to bite a hole into it and start pulling. To our surprise it was cotton instead of artifical filling. Took that away in an instant. She has her carcasses from previous destroyed toys and her KONG. She has been clinging to me since I have been off for the holidays. She is so sweet and funny that its going to be hard on both of us when the season is over.:crying: Keep me posted on all of the cute things everyones Doxie does. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL AND TO ALL OF THE DOXIES OUT THERE:partytim:

Our otherwise prissy little one will tear a toy up faster than you can say "dachshund." She is a MAJOR chewer, a trait which seems to have developed over her 2 1/2 years. When I first brought her home, she had a little yellow duck that was her favorite toy ... eventually he lost his feet, then his beak ... it wasn't pretty :afraid:
One of the best toys I ever got was a braided fleece toy ... very simple, just 3 "tubes" of fleece fabric braided together & knotted at the ends. It became Rocky's favorite toy, and what's left of it went with him to his new home. I think one could be easily made with strips of terry towels ... will try it when I have the energy ;)

Our dogs have also managed to destroy almost every toy we've bought for them. Whether it's a ball, a squeekie or a stuffed toy, they only manage to last about a half hour, tops. Coal is almost surgical in his precision when he's tearinng apart a stuffed toy. He'll pick the stitches out and only take out enough stuffing to get to the noise maker or how ever much he can manage before I can get it away from him. I'll usually push it all back in and sew it up. They have two toys that they haven't managed to destroy: a sheep that makes a grunting sound and a monkey that makes monkey noises( not that they haven't tried- Sheepy's lost his arm more than once and Monkey's had most of his stuffing pulled out through his belly button.)

Aren't they just amazing?? I find myself checking the "chew-o-meter" on the toys for durability and rejecting almost everything in the stores. One toy that seems to hold up well is the rope-bone ... I just worry about those little threads ending up in little tummies.

Wow... my Trixie is so different from your doxies. She does not care about any toys. All the toys she got for Christmas still on her bed untouched. She prefer her sweaters. I know because she whines endlessly if i leave her naked. I am thinking, i should just returned all the toys and buy her more sweaters :D

Otto is just like Trixie - he generally couldn't care less about toys. About once a week we have a couple of seconds with his stuffed sheep, the rest of the time it's "yawn".
Now, pigs ears and raw hide are another matter all together. Otto doesn't chew them, he just carries them around the house until he finds the PERFECT spot to hide it. We've found bones/ears in the shower, toilet paper baskets, under chairs, tucked neatly into corners..just about everywhere.
Usually we have no clue where he hides them until the urge hits him again and there he is prancing around the house with his rawhide or pigs ear looking for a new perfect place to hide it.

I love watching my Willie play. Being only four months, he doesn't have a long attention span. So what he does is get all his toys in the living room and spread them around his little bed, then he proceeds to play with everyone of them one at a time for a couple of minutes. When he's hit them all, he starts all over again. He has no problems playing by himself, which surprised me. One of his christmas gifts was one of those balls where you put the treats in and he has to roll it around to get some to pop out. It didn't take very long for him to figure it out. Now he rolls it across the room running along side it. Listen to me, I guess I am now a proud mama - so I have to brag about Willie. I can't wait to see what other surprises he gives me.

My Angel is killing a tennis ball right now. She is our first toy-killing dachshund. She has chewed a hold in it and then picked it up and carried it around. It looked like a big clown nose. Mr. Duck and Lambie are faring only slightly better. Our last dachsie, Sassy was more of a decorator. She would carry her treasures around the house and place them, with great care, in just the right place (middle of the floor, under a chair, whatever...). We learned not to move them. She also did this with certain pieces of dog food. Since toy killing is a new thing here, I think that a kong might be our next toy. Isn't it interesting how all of their little personalities are so different.

must be so much fun!
Willow is both Killer and Decorator. Lately "furniture arranging" is her passion. Every evening she pulls her pillow out of her crate, flips it around the room until it is in the perfect spot. (in front of the heater usually) Then gets her blanket and toys and arranges them and rearranges them until just right. Then she lays down about a foot away and admires her work! It is so cute!
Let us know when you have a few pics of Angel for us!

:sarcastic Toys hey if that is all they chewed on. My Ivy is all of a sudden chewing on things that have been here for years. Of course I do have the dog named Chewz-it, for a reason too!
But the best one was one of my first doxies, Ozcar went to the vet. He was amazed at how his K9 teeth were flat. He asked if he chewed rocks. Ok so he had at times, but it was mostly just chewing on nyla bones and what ever he could find. :greensq:
I had one mini that liked to play with toys, and he did keep them for awhile. But one of the other dogs would decide to play tug of war and all of a sudden it would be stuffing all over the place. :partytim: But we would buy things from the liquidator that were for kids and for $1 we would supervise the shredding of the octapus! They had boxes of them and we would stop and buy 4-5 at a time. Just to watch the doxies have some fun.

I have finally found the indestructable (sp?) toy it even has a squeaker! I found it at PetsMart. I'm not sure of the brand, sorry, but the one I got is a frog and it's really thick rubbery type material and it has a good squeaker. We have had it for over 2 months and it hasn't been broken into yet! Other than the frog that I bought, I think there's a sheep and a pig, but like I said, they are THE BEST toys I have found! Our Baby Boy does the same thing to toys that most of yours do, he unstuffs them in about 5 seconds flat! Mama doesn't unstuff toys, so she's allowed to have the stuffed ones, she does a good job of keeping him away from her toys, too so that works out good. :circle:
FYI . . . we have tried to put many of the things discussed here in the *store* (click bone icon at top of page) as we could. Replaceable squeaker toys and others are in there. :D

Oh goodie! will have to check out the selection at our local PetsMart :bounce: I can't remember if I mentioned that another toy that's been a hit with Miss Dixie is the "Buster Cube" ... you load small pieces of food/treats and when the cube is rolled the treats fall out. Supposedly you can regulate how quickly they fall out ... but we haven't figured that out yet!!
