We've been working with Brody and brushing his teeth since we first got him so he doesn't have a problem letting us. The issue is he loves the flavor of the dog toothpaste so he licks it and I don't feel like I'm getting his molars that well. Any tips on how to brush effectively?

I've read that you only have to brush the outside of the teeth & the dog's saliva takes care of the inside.. For way back teeth - you need something long enough to reach. There are dental wipes & also from the article - which I misplaced :faint: - it says a dampened piece of gauze - just water - is good too.
What kind of toothpaste & brush do you use?

I have a long toothbrush that is specific for dogs, it has a smaller and larger side that I use with an enzymatic toothpaste that is beef ::gag:: flavored.

Our Freddy does the same thing. His tongue goes about 100 licks per minute when brushing his teeth. Makes it difficult to get to the back. Last month, I bought an electric toothbrush for him but haven't tested it out yet.... I'm thinking the spinning head will keep him from licking so much. haha

We learned a lot from the oral surgeon that did Fritz's (one of our rescues) repair of his horrific oral nasal fistulas... to the turn of $3,300.00!!! :faint:
He said to use a child's soft toothbrush, no finger brushes, washcloth etc....
Hold them close on one side of your body, kind football style and with the opposite hand...roll the toothbrush along the side of there gums to get the brush between the cheek and gum...get all the way to the back and gently hold their snout closed (otherwise they bite the brush/lick and the teeth don't get cleaned). Start from the back with a circular motion to get all teeth and come forward... repeat on the other side. :Sun2:
He also explains on his website...

OH NO!! Really?!? :faint: I gave up using a toothbrush, it was too hard, and I started using a finger brush.
Do you remember why he said no finger brushes? Its so much easier than the toothbrush was

Because of the same reason it wouldn't work for people....it only touches the surface and doesn't get in all the cracks... I started with the finger brushes too...and had to throw them out :(

Oh man!! This is gonna be rough.... Drag hates the regular toothbrush, and I was trying to use a kids one before. Back to square one :faint:

Yeah, I'm doing the finger brush about every other day right now, and we WERE using CET treats, but I had to take them away because Dragon was starting to get aggressive over them, maybe I'll give the rinse a try! :thanx:
