Rockys nails are horrible black thick and long (I'm not even sure they were clipped his first 4 years of "life")...for the 3 years we've had him he goes every 14 days for a clipping. I've had the dremel since October '06 and have not used it really with him. He got his nails done on Thursday so yesterday I got the dremel out with some treats he was on my bed (he loves it there) and I worked a bit with him...wiggly but pretty good. Today I brought it out again...OMG...he laid there kissing me while I sanded the "claws" down, I choose to stop because the kissing was tickling me LOL! When Joe is home I'd like to have him video tape it, as it was pretty funny.

That is so AWESOME!! :Sun2:
Good for you two!!
I am such a dremel nut. It took me about 2 months to get my 2 doxies' nails short so keep at it as much as you can. Good luck with that and can't wait to see the video!!

Wow! I've tried using the Dremel sander drill on Brandy, and she goes berzerk! I'd love to learn how to get to use it like you did!

What we did with the dremel is lay it next to his food bowl every time he got fed for like two weeks then we turned it on while he ate dinner so he got used to the sound and associated it with a good event FOOD
Then we brought out the big guns...
Put him on the table put the dremel next to him and put peanut butter in front of him,,,,,, and he licks the inside of the jar..... while we dremel... we do use a jar thats empty (plastic) and put a 1/2 teaspoon inside of it spread around so he can keep busy,,,switch paws and refresh the peanut butter.
Now we turn on the dremel he goes in to a dance lifting his paw to get picked up to sit on the table... HE LOVES the dremel...

I wish I could get Amos to eat peanut butter it sounds like a wonderful idea. But I never let Amos have any people food and now he won't touch it. He will even walk around it on the floor - he's a differnet doxie! We always went for long car rides in the summer when he was little and we would stop at a fast food and eat while he sat in his bed between us and I would just give him a dog treat, he has never shown an interest in any people food. I have been proud of that but this is one of the times I wish I could make people food work. I guess we can't have the best of both worlds.:faint:

There is an excellent link on how to dremel nails. Good illustrations too.

Another suggestion that doesn't involve food is massages. When you guys are all cuddled and watching a movie, just run the dremel so it's part of the TV noise. After doing that for some time, you can run the dremel during a movie for a short time, and just reach down and massage them. What you would be doing is conditioning them to relax during that noise.
So just go slowly like that, step by step. You know that the fridge makes noise on and off and it doesn't concern them. They can get desensitized to the dremel too and associate it with good things.
If they don't like their feet touched, you can massage them and move down their legs to their feet. They learn it's OK to have their feet touched.
Sounds easier than it is!! Good luck! It's worth the effort! :D

Thank you for the idea! I have no problem he is used to me touching his feet.
My husband uses the dremel tool when making his lamps so everytime I hear it I carry Amos down there hoping he will get used to the noise but I think I will take your approach it sounds like a better idea.
Thanks Again

To get him use to the noise, I would turn it on in the kitchen when I was feeding him. First though I let him see it off on the floor with treats around it. Still working on getting the claws down as short as I'd like it's a work in progress.

I have one that I bought at Wal-Mart for about $20. It's for human manicures too. It hardly makes any sound. It's called HoMedics.
We had all 4 minie here - my 2 & my daughter's 2 - & all 4 got dremeled in no time at all. The battery lasted through all of them. It has no cord to get in the way & It doesn't hurt if you touch the flesh...We tested it by putting it against our hand to be sure it would not cause pain.
The puppers get a nice treat when their nails are done. :D
