View Full Version : Help me figure out what wrong with my poor puppy!
My dachshund puppies are 8 weeks old, they are a litter of two. The male weighs 3 and a half pound and is doing great. The female though is having a tough time, she only weighs one and 3/4 pounds, she doesnt walk hardly at all, hardly ever lifts her head. She eats whatever we put in front of her, is mentally alert and is a sweetheart. She is just skin and bones though. I fear she is just weak, Im not sure I am just looking for answers for her. The vet wants to do a liver blood test next week, he says she appears normal with everything he checked, he just didnt have any answers for me, I am feeding her several times a day with Iams puppy food made into a mush with a little cottage cheese added. I have never had problems like this with a puppy. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Honey, I have no idea...but I can't believe that no one has responded to your tear-jerking plea, yet has expounded at length about the virtues of olive oil and peanut butter...
Good luck with the poor dear; I would love to know how she's doing. God bless!

I got my furkid at 10 months old from rescue, so I have no experience with pups at all and don't offer advice on things I have no knowledge about (I also don't give housebreaking advice, as he was already housebroken when I got him). I do, however, have knowlege on Olive Oil and Peanut Butter as my dog tends to get dry skin, so I researched what would help him w/o having to resort to medication and that is what I found. I can share with others who ask that it helped me. On the other hand, I cannot give any knowlegable advice about underweight puppies short of directing her to her Vet, which I would assume she had already addressed.
I can't help to feel defensive, you may not have even been directing that jab at me personaly, but we do try to be helpful here. I hope you can see that.

To help pups gain weight goat's milk(not cow) and mix raw hamburger in it. They thrive on this and it's easy to eat. Give a little yogurt (to aid in the digestive tract bactria) or there is a additive you can give that helps, but I can't for the life of me remember right now (the vets have it) Especially if the pup has been on antibodies.
Is there diaherra or any other things. There is a new strain of virus going around, it is like the flu and as contigous (sp?)
Has the tyhriod been checked?

Tami, ask your vet about Myasthemia gravis. I wonder if that could possibly be it?
Someone posted an article about it over at the Dachshund Zone under health/Myasthemia gravis.
Good luck with your pup.
