Hello! I have found a breeder in Indiana (I live in Va) who has two silver dapple pups, one of each sex. They are about 5 months old, and she has not yet sold them because they may be show quality, and she holds on to these pups until 6 months. Anyway, she's willing to sell me the set for $1200, which sounds like a fair price to me. Unfortunately, she hasn't been able to get any pics up yet, and I can't find a picture of a silver dapple. I was wondering if anyone has a picture of a silver dapple I could see. Does this sound like a fair price for this set? Thanks in advance (as always)

I think the term silver dapple is now just being called Dapple. Usually silver dapple was in a Black and Tan.

The two pics below are of Darci... my best friends B&T Silver Dapple. She is almost 5...

About price... would you want to show or breed, or are you just looking for a pet? If for a pet maybe she would sell for less with a spay/neuter contract.

Like snowflakes, I don't think any two dapples look alike. Each is shaded and patterned just slighty different than the next. Some I've really liked, others not so much. From puppy to adult dapples can change drastically. When my Cindy was born she resembled a dalmation puppy, but as she grew the black and tan became more prominant. This is a picture of her at about 12 weeks.

The term *silver* dapple is a very very old term that has been replaced with the more genetically correct term *black and tan dapple*. They used to use silver because it correctly described the color of the spots but what we now use is the base color combined with the pattern ie dapple.

$600 per puppy is what you would be paying. In your area that may be the average price for a pet. My speech would not be to that area. My speech would be to the area of buying littermates. I never advise people to do that because the puppies are bonded more to each other than they are to the humans and you really do want them bonded more to the humans than to each other. It is much better for pets to be brought in separately, IMO and experience, trained and accustomed to the house and set-up and routine and then the next one brought in to learn the routine. The pets NEED the independence from their littermates or their housemates, they need to know they can exist without that other dog constantly there and many dogs do not know that (and it can make parts of life very difficult) and this pair probably does not know that at this point because I'll bet she has kept them together unless she is a very unusual person.

If she is keeping them for show, she should have tons of pictures by this age :) *stacked* pictures is what we call them - where you have the dog posed as you would on a table in the show ring <g>

Hi Jennie and Cindi,

I kind of wondered about a breeder describing their dogs as silver dapples. It was mu understanding that the term BT dapple has replaced the term silver dapple. As far as price I can't comment. I've heard that breeders will many times sell a dog they kept as a perspective show animal that didn't work out at a bargin price on a pet contact. Many breeders by that point will care much more about the dog being place in a good home than on making any money from the deal. I won't comment on litter mates since I've never had a pair. Prices very greatly from area to area. In this area that price is about what many BYB sell dogs for. I haven't priced pups from quality breeders but I understand pet quality pups from a good breeder generally sell for less than they do from many BYB.

How eager is th Indianna breeder to sell you the pair? How amny questions have they been asking about your, your home, family, past pets, etc.? Look at the adoption forms at

http://www.drwp.net and http://www.hua.org It is my understanding that most good breeders will want much of the same information from a prospective client before they will get serious about selling you a dog.

Good luck with the search,

Being breeder referral for my dachshund club in TX, I can ASSURE you prices vary greatly from area to area. AND, the Midwest and the coasts are much more expensive normally than they are down here in the south and I was really surprised when I read that price. Most *color* breeders, BYB breeders, charge more for color (which I find appalling BUT that is me and I do wires so we don't do color) so it was even more shocking that the breeder was asking $600. A pet puppy, miniature smooth in TX from a reputable breeder at 3 months is normally around $500-$600 on a spay/neuter contract. I have heard much higher prices from the Midwest and the coasts.

My comment about selling pairs should have been obvious from my previous post. It sounds desperate to me and it may not be...this breeder may just like you.

If they are a show person, do they belong to DCA and the dachshund club that would be the local one for them? And I second Tom's questions :)

It is not that I don't want you to have a new addition(s) to your family....I just want you to have a new addition(s) to your family from a good background <g> with you having done your research to the best of your ability with all the tools that can be provided to you.

Cindi,

Thanks for the comments. I really do appreciate them. Every breeder I'm talking to now has been referred to me through the DCA. In fact, the one with the "silver" dapples has been recommended by three different DCA breeder referrals, and has come up in two other conversations with breeders. From everyone I have spoken to about her, she seems to be very well known in the DCA, and very well-respected.

I have decided not to get these pups, however. One of the main issues for me was shipping, and I'd rather not do this. I've found two alternatives that will work. One local breeder should have a litter due in mid February, and I'm trying to get on her waiting list. She is an active member of the Dachshund Fanciers of Central Virginia.

There is also a breeder in Wisconsin who can help me as well. I found her through the DCA. She's going to some national show in April where she can take a pup for me, and a breeder in Pennsylvania will pick him up and bring him back, where I'll drive to Pennsylvania. I know this sounds a little complicated, but the woman in Penn. is a director with DCA, very very nice, and more than willing to help me out.

So, sounds like I've been able to narrow down to two options that will work for me. I do appreciate all the comments to my never-ending questions, and I'm sure they're just beginning!

Hi Jennie,

While I can't make any real comments positive or negative about this breeder here is one that at least makes a good attempt to do many of the correct thngs on their web site. Take a look at their code of ethics page at http://www.lilpawsranch.com/codeofethics.html I've seen the site before several years ago but like I said I can't make any real comments about them positive or negative.

The following is from their code of ethics page and I think would be a minimun I would expect from a long distance breeder before I would even consider talking to them about a dog.

--------------BEGIN ATTACHMENT---------------
We screen prospective buyers as thoroughly as possible to determine their desire and ultimate intent for each puppy we place.

All puppies leaving our possession shall be a minimum of eight (8) weeks of age, or if being shipped to another state, they will be at least twelve (12) weeks of age.

The buyer must agree that we will be contacted whenever an owner can no longer keep a dachshund at any time in the dachshund's life, and it will be our obligation as breeders to take the dachshund back or arrange for its care until such time that the dachshund can be placed in a new home.

--------END OF ATTACHMENT-------------

Alos take a look at their sales contract. It has many of the points in it that I have heard are common in contracts with many good breeders.

Good luck with your search. I appreciate all that you are trying to do to locate a good companion.

Hi, I just wanted to comment on the Lilpaws site. I have spoken to the owner Deborah Lupton several times and she is a nice lady and has her Doxies best interests in mind. I live just 30 minutes from her and had been on a list for a puppy. I wanted one a little bigger than she had so I didn't get one. Best thing to do is call her she is very sweet and helpful. I too am looking for a silver or as I have been corrected a black & tan dapple. They are beautiful and will be a wonderful addition to my piebald and red. Good luck!!!

I bought Willy last June & his registration paper lists him as "Silver Dapple"...so evidently the name has not been changed as a standard rule yet? Just thought I'd toss that info in...lol...I am still new to everything & learning daily. Love my baby dearly, tho...best little bud I could ever have!!! :D
