I have no idea how long it will take before Guinness grows out his long coat (I hope it's soon! :crsfnger: Does anyone know?), but the fur between his toes grows fast. Today, I got out my scissors and had Will hold him down. We had to hold him Cesar Milan style, keeping him submissive under the "bite", and while it helped with he squirming, he would cry and cry. He won't sit still to be brushed either, I have to get Will to hold him.
For a brush we are using the Furminator, which takes out the undercoat?
How do I get Mr.Wiggles to sit still?

I'm confoosed... Don't you have a long haired doxie? Shouldn't they have long hair? I have a B/T Smooth, so please pardon my ignorance. There are other people on here that actually have LH doxies and would be better help to you.
As far as sitting still... when I trim Sailor's nails, I give him yummy treats and he sits still for me. Maybe that will help?
Good luck! :)

The long fur has to grow out. He doesn't have smooth fur, and it's long, just not long enough that hangs over him like it will when he is full grown. I am just not sure how long it takes?
I will try treats next time. He just wants to bite the brush, and needs to watch what I am doing - which makes getting behind the ears especially difficult.

I'm bored, so I guess I'll answer all your posts LOL.
I use this brush, and it works GREAT! http://www.petco.com/product/14246/Four-Paws-Ultimate-Touch-Gentle-Slicker-Wire-Brushes.aspx
My boy came to me at 8 weeks old with already a TON of fur. But I was told the true length and amount won't come in until they are about 2 years old. I'm approaching 2 with Mousse this summer, and he has a huge amount of fur. I don't trim much of anything except his fur between the pads on his feet. Oh MAN he hates that. But the quickest and easiest way I discovered was getting an electric shaver. I got his shaver for $20 at Target I think. I tested it on my hand and there was NO way to cut him. It took a little while for him to get use to it, but now he just sulks the whole time and lets me do it haha. Trimming with scissors worked ok, but I'd have to either really hold him down after two feet or give up and try the other two feet later. His attention span for sitting still is not one of his strong points, so the shaver works really well. I get all four feet down in about half the time it takes me to do two of them by hand.
I did trim his ear fur a bit when he started tripping on them (they are long!). And then trimmed a tad off the "skirt" or "butt feathers"...the fur that hangs down from his tushie when you lift up the tail. I also make sure this er...um...anus is clear of fur since I don't "dingle berries" hanging off. LOL You'll pick up the lingo we use here in no time :D. haha
Wanted to add: Give him a yummy treat afterwards, that way he associates grooming with treats. :)

He doesn't mind me playing with his toes at all, I am always giving him little foot massages! :D We will look into a little trimmer, I figure that would be the easiest way, and maybe it'll get him used to the buzzing for when he needs to go to a groomer.

I got to meet both his parents, and they both had gorgeous long coats. :hearts: I think if we ever get another Daschie (I already want another one), I want a chocolate like his Daddy.

I have a small shaver from petedge to do Zachs feet. He'll let me shave his feet and inbetween his pads...as long as I dont bring out the nail clippers...then he'll flip out. I just hold on to him a bit tighter. I let him wiggle and squrum then he'll settle down...i do a nail...and so on. Takes a while but hes getting it.
The rest of the hair comes off when I take him to the groomers. The groomers dont have to do much, i just dont want to deal with it. His nails grow FAST...so inbetween we get a nail trim through our meetup group.

When you go to the groomers, MAKE SURE you tell them exactly how you want him cut. There have been two dachsies on this board that went to the groomer and they cut off all the ear hair. It still looked cute, but unless you want that, make sure you tell them what you want them to cut. Maybe even bring in a picture. I HATE getting surprises with haircuts (esp. on myself). I groom my two (trimming, nails, cleaning ears/teeth, etc.). Groomers can get expensive! :faint: LOL

Both of mine had one parent being a short haired. Rambo is way thicker in his coat then Sophie but both I do the electric shaver and got it for a little under 20 at walmart or right at 20 I can't remember...The sooner you start all of the grooming the better. I also trim there but areas...Sophie I have to do more and Rambo I tend to do every other trimming on his butt areas but I do trim his paws...I brush both of mine about every 2 days and both have very fanned tails and the hairy ears but not as thick as typical longhairds who both parents were long haired. It will take time for you pup to get used to the trimming and all, but mine I can do by myself and at first I need my fiances help as well :) Especially with the trimming of there nails, but now they are so used to it that they don't give me to many problems. It is good of you to start everything early...FYI starting the teeth brushing is great as well, even though your baby still has his baby teeth, getting him used to that is a plus as well :)

He already has pretty waves on his ears, and fluffy legs, but I guess the skirt will come with time. Oh well. It was more the personality difference that I read about that made me choose the long hair over the smoothie. (No offense to the smoothies out there, I have just read and been told that the Curlies are less likely to get snappy than a Smoothie)
I play with his feet, and will probably 'trim' his paws every week instead of once a month, just to get him used to it. I will be sure to bring a pic when I take him to get dolled up, but I wonder if I could learn to do it myself? Are there different types of Daschie cuts?

No offense taken...but I have to stick up for the smoothies so rumors don't prevail. :D
I have 2 smoothies..2 yrs old & 3 yrs old & neither has ever snapped or tried to bite anyone. They are sweet, laid back & have wondrful temperaments. I have read that the long haired are more easy going & the wires are playful little clouwns - but my two have the same traits...& they are smoothies!! :D
I think all dachsie are beatiful..a smoothie is just my favorite & grooming pretty much amounts to baths & trimming nails.

And I have one of both. They are both loving and cuddly in different ways and different times. In fact, if I want to snuggle and sleep with a pupper in my arms, its Cocoa 100% of the time. She LOVES to be held in your arms, be warm and just s-l-e-e-p! Mousse will either climb on my hip and sleep on top, or curl up by the curve of my knees. But...Mousse is also the one that will follow me from room to room to room. No matter how many times, and if I walk in circles.

My Mz Kizzy is due for a good grooming job after today. I took them out to the park and she loved running through the water and the snow that was still there. But she really does need her feet trimed and now a bath. Maybe I will get at it one of these days. I use a regular Oster Dog clipper it was worth the extra money. I shave her belly short so it doesn't get all kinds of crud twisted on it when we are out in the woods. I do have one of those little shaver Clippers from Walmart but it isn't very strong. Kizz has a very thick coat and it takes alot to get the clipper to cut all that hair. In the winter I leave her feet alone because I figure it keeps her toes warm while outside. She was afraid of the clipper at first being a rescue doxie. But she hasn't gotten used to it and has learned. "I AM GOING TO DO IT ONE WAY OR THE OTHER - SO GET OVER IT"!!!
What a meanine hey! But she knows I won't give in to her. But after we are done we snuggle and she gets good treats too. She has come a long way and has learned I am not going to hurt her. Some times doing just one foot at a time and taking a break helps. It all depends on the dog.
Good Luck!

:Sun2: and we don't have to groom....
Ah yes that is one of my favorite things about our little smoothies!:D Especially since my other sweetie is a Bichon and requires grooming galore! Before Molly came into my life all my dogs were high mantainence dogs in the grooming dept. I had poodles as a child, then Amber my Chow Chow, then Maggie and Molly. Molly is a breeze to keep clean.:cheer:

Maybe the next Daschie I get will be a smoothie. =D Luckily I won't have much grooming to do with Guinness until he is a lot older, seeing as how it takes his coat to grow in.
What was the age you first had to take your LHs in for a grooming?

I love long hairs...I had a sheltie that needed to be groomed much like a dachie but probably more often. I got so tired of paying all that money for the groomer and I tried to do it myself as much as I could. After my kids came along it was so hard.
When she passed on and it was time for us to get another pet I wanted a dog that was low, low, low (no pun intended) mantience. So we went with a smoothie! She get's a bath in my laundry room sink about once every few months only when needed. She is so low maintence...just clip the toes and that is about it.

Willow was suppose to not have real long hair. Her momma was a smooth and her daddy LH. But she has a very full coat. I even trimmed her tail flag last fall and it has grown back to dragging on the ground. We just trimmed her feet hair because she was getting mudd packed inbetween her pads. We keep her bottom trimmed around and this summer DD wants to take her for walks in the woods so her belly and leg hair will have to go. To many burrdocks and briars. She was a year old and had alot of hair now that she is two it is very full.

Guys, don't read the next paragraph, just move on to the next post! Get your girlfriend to read it, but only if you have a long hair male.
I hear that for long hair males, it's important that they have a "hygienic trim" around their winkie. I have seen photos of a strangulated peepee and it required (I'm so sorry to say this) amputation or euthanization.

Oh yes, you have to trim off that fur. What I do is I grab Mr. Winkie in my left hand between my first finger and thumb. When I get to the end, and NO skin is present...I snip if off with scissors. He doesn't care, just lays on his back and lets me groom.

Here are a few shots of Dixie's long hair on her tail, and well uhmm....her private area. I do keep the private hair just long enough that....well....that she doesn't step on it or trip over it :sofunny:because that is how I check to see if she has peed!!! You know, the winky dink check.
She is 10months old and I think she had most of that hair by the time she was about 6 or 7 months old. I don't know if her tail and hiney hair is in full but I sure hope her private hairs don't grow at a faster rate because I already have to trim it about once a month now:faint:. Both of her parents had beautiful long hair:wahooo:. The hairs on her toes need to be trimmed but I love that look that she has now because we call them her slippers:hearts:.

I know she was not liking this picture because she was wiggling all over the place while I was trying to take it. She is usually not that modest:o.

Guinness has hair on the end of his privates, but his belly is bald. His testes descended but are just covered in fine fur, but not long. Is it that hair on the end I am supposed to be snipping? Maybe I should take a picture.

Just snip off the fur that hangs off the end of Mr. Winkie. :) There'll still be fur around it, and maybe a little off the end, but just make sure here isn't enough fur to get all stiff and hard from pee'ing.
