My sweet little dachshund is a pig. She wants to eat constantly. She's eating Science Diet Oral Care, which has helped her teeth to stay cleaner. But since changing her to the Oral Care, she's gained a little weight. She used to eat IAMS weight control. Back in December, I started adding unsalted green beans to her diet. She loves them, by the way! Greenie beanies, as we call them, as the best thing since peanut butter to her. I don't know what else to try to keep her feeling satisfied. She's fed half of her food in the morning, a few treats in the afternoon, and a snack (the other half of her food) in the evening with green beans. But she is still a hungry little thing all the time. Any suggestions?
And yes, I've tried baby carrots. My sweet little angel will not eat a carrot unless it is cooked!! ;)
Thanks for any suggestions.

I think my jake is just starting to be a treat hound. he knows where is treats are and will sit in front of them and whimper like I never feed him :)

Jake is just the opposite when it comes to carrots... he likes em raw :)

Hi Sally,

The first suggestion I have is to find a food other than SD. Look for a food that lists meat as the first ingredient and has no grains in it . . . especially corn. Do this even if it means you'll now have to brush his teeth. :D

Also, is Haley mini/tweeny or standard, how much does Haley weigh and how much are you feeding (total) per day. If it's anywhere near what is recommended on the bag of SD it's probably too much. :)

The green beans are a good alternative to more food.

My Moo is the same way! She weighs in at 14 lbs (we are working on that by the way!). She gets 1/8 cup in the morning, a treat or 1/2 one for going into her crate and 1/8 cup of dry again at night along with a baby carrot and a another Mother Hubbord treat. She is always hungery poor baby - so I've been adding canned pumpkin to her evening meal. I've found a new dog food that I'm going to change her over to I think it's called Natural Balance - not sure just got it. The 1st on it's list was turkey... and 3rd or 4th was duck. She loves it too. Hope she does better on it with her weight issue.

I remember, years ago . . . when I fed SD, the dogs were always overweight no matter how much I cut the portions. :(

As with most quality foods . . . now, on Nutro Natural Choice . . . more food=more weight . . . less food=less weight. So it's just easier to regulate weight. :)

Things like pumpkin and green beans are also great *filler*. :)

That's what Mitzi is on now Nutro Natural Choice but I'm going to try her on that new food that I can't remember the name of  I'll have to check it and see what it's call once I get home.

Haley has turned out to be a tweenie. She weighs about 13.5 lbs now. I think she could stand to lose a lb. or two. I just want to keep her at a healthy size to avoid any possible weight-related back problems. She gets about a cup of food total. Obviously, not enough in her little dachsie mind! :caffeine:
About changing her from SD and then having to brush her teeth, you tell her to let Mommie brush her teeth! :raz: I will consider it after doing some research into different brands of dog food. I don't like to have her hungry all the time.
I wonder if she would like pumpkin as another "filler". I'll have to try that. Just canned pumpkin, like for pies???
Bet she'll like it. After all, it's people food!

Sally,

No, not pumpkin pie filling, but rather . . . canned pure pumpkin. Use just enough to coat the kibble . . .no more. :)
