I was wondering if I could use a buzzer to shave Butter's girl parts, like around it and around her but, and the tip of Guinness's manhood. Or would a buzzing shaver be too traumatic for the little boy? And as for Butter, I just wasn't sure if shaving was good for a girl?
I just found trimming her awkward, especially since I have never so much as given a haircut, so I am not very handy with the scissors, so my trimming doesn't look neat as much as it looks choppy.
I can't wait to take Butter to a groomer so that I can watch how it's done.

I've never buzzed anything except Mousse's paws. And I'm pretty sure if I came at his willy with the buzzer he'd freak out . For your boy, trimming off the tip of hair is pretty easy. I can see how Butter's might be a little more challenging. You could always experiment with her and see if shaving it off would be better. But I'd be worried about shaving off too much. At least with scissors you have a little more control. But either way, you need practice and luckily she won't be embarrassed with a botched haircut. hehe All groomers learned from practice, so don't be too afraid. :)

If you decide to trim,.... Bribery works wonders,, like some peanut butter on a spoon while your back there trimming, in time they will associate the buzzing with pea nut butter and come running to the buzz,, my two do it to get their nails trimmed... with a dremel...

It's not that I don't like the Au Naturale look, it's that when Butter pees she gets sticky and smelly cause of the way she squats, and as for trimming Guinness's little tip of hair I only do because I was told it was good to prevent possible strangulation of his penis, by quite a few people on this board. If it were not for Butter being sticky and Guinness being in potential penile danger I wouldn't bother. I love their fluffy butts!

You almost made me ruin my wireless keyboard....
I never heard of STRANGULATION of the PENIS...ROFLMAO......
Only time my long hair has gotten any hair trimmed was for his ultra sound and xrays a month ago. the hair on his paw pads are so long and it looks like he is running on clouds... I take the time to wipe him down when he gets wet or dirty he has a towel at the front door when he comes in he goes staright to it and sits on it to get his paws rubbed.
thanks for the hoot whip snortin laugh.....

Guys, don't read the next paragraph, just move on to the next post! Get your girlfriend to read it, but only if you have a long hair male.
I hear that for long hair males, it's important that they have a "hygienic trim" around their winkie. I have seen photos of a strangulated peepee and it required (I'm so sorry to say this) amputation or euthanization.
I seen that strangulated wee wee as well!! That was so horrible...and then the surgery afterwards...poor lil guy.
Oh yes, you have to trim off that fur. What I do is I grab Mr. Winkie in my left hand between my first finger and thumb. When I get to the end, and NO skin is present...I snip if off with scissors. He doesn't care, just lays on his back and lets me groom.
All of these taken from my post We had our first trim today awhile ago.
Glad I could give you a laugh though. :D

I use a clippers (what you call a buzzer) on the privates all the time. It's safer than a scissors. I do butts, peaties and pee pees that way. I have a little battery operated one that I use for those areas since it's smaller and easier to handle. Of course all mine are used to the sound of clippers... you should have some one hold the dog for you when you're doing this and provide lots of treats.

As far as the penal strangulation goes... you would have to be a pretty awful owner and I'm sure the dog would have to me experiencing major matting problems ALL over from not having been groomed in FOREVER for that to be a danger. The more immediate issue is basic hygene. My wires and I'm sure Longs also get long hairs on the tip of the sheath that get peed on and can get rather nasty looking... same for the female parts. One benefit of having a smooth I guess.

he even has Fu Manchu Wiskers... his paws are like pillows, his feathers on his legs are so long they hit the floor but no long hair on his winkie.... nothing that gets nasty...

I use an electric buzzer/shaver when grooming my two. Rambo I normally only groom his paws and his butt area, but his butt area I normally only have to buzz about 3 times a year b'c his hair really doesn't grow fast in htat section of his body. As for Sophie I groom her private area and its much easier with a buzzer then scissors and gets closer etc and would not hurt her at all...I groom her private area about once every 3 months, she gets really poofy back there and ofcourse I get nervouse grooming her around that area, but I know I can't hurt her and try to get as close as I can to trimming her area...I like it b'c it looks better then a big poofy section and I know nothing will get caught in hair on the way out, lol...Mine both do really good and the more you do it the better they get used to it :)

I have 2 smooths - so no clue about this!!
If I got a wire or a long hair - I would go to the groomer for the first time to learn how to do it properly.

me too- LOL After 17 years of cocker spaniel grooming we knew we wanted smooths.
Very interesting discussion though:-)

My last dog was a cocker too!! And that was a HUGE factor in getting a smooth Dachsie for us too! I love cockers, but I hate the grooming! Dragon is a breeze to take care of!

Cocoa is so low maintenance its amazing. The only thing I normally do is wash her face because of her allergies and then spray her with Nova Pearls conditioner since she gets dry skin...also from her allergies :(.
But Mousse isn't really that much trouble!
I trim the winky hair ~1x a month?? And the same for his paws. I haven't shaved his butt though. Haven't found a need to do that. The only time that area got nasty was when he had soft stool. But 99% of the time...not a problem. :Sun2:
