Over the last few months, Clyde has gotten small bald patches on top of his head, right next to his ears. One has started to grow back but the other has just started. I haven't noticed any excessive scratching so I'm not sure what this is. Has anyone else ever had this happen?

If you could post a pic it would help. But a lot of doxies have bald spots right on the top of their ears. If you notice some of the pic's of smooths especially you can see it. If it is a lot of patchs you might want to get him in for a skin scraping just to be sure of what it is.

A picture would be a big help. It may just be natural bald pattern on some smooths...but it could be something that might need to be treated.
Lots of :rayz::rayz::rayz: for Clyde. :hearts:

Sounds like mites to me--have your vet do a scraping. Its called red mange-do a search and see if the fits the pattern.

As suggested.... do you have pics?
What does his diet consist of?

Could be dachshund pattern baldness. Google it and you will find a lot of info.

I'm at work currently and can't take a pic or that would make things easier. I don't think it would be baldness as the first patch has pretty much grown back. Both spots were very small (maybe a little bigger around that the eraser on a top of a pencil).
He is just over 10 months old now. He doesn't try to itch at the spots so it's sort of got me puzzled I guess. Thanks for all the replies so far!

It might warrant a visit to the vet because you're right it doesn't sound like baldness. Could be mites could be ringworm or it could be a skin condition due to allergies. But a scrapping would be able to tell you a lot.

I would have the vet do a scraping and he will know if its ringworm or mites. I think its mites, because it is very common in pups and its caused by stress at times.

Are a form of mites that take advantage of an immune system breakdown. When it occurs in puppies it is frequently self-fixed BUT, big BUT, it also is frequently NOT self-fixed. That is because the immune system can't bounce back and fight off the mange mite *invasion*. Demodex mites are always around us and our animals but our immune system keeps the skin inviolate to them :)
Since he is having more spots show up, I agree with the others that a skin scraping is called for. It is much easier to clear up demodex in the early stages before a secondary infection sets in.
Sarcoptic mange, unlike demodex, is a contagious mange issue. Thankfully, it is not as common as demodex.

Thanks for all the help and info. Clyde is off to the vet tomorrow. A couple of friends had told me that maybe he got bit by something since we take him for walks in a bush by our house with trails, etc.. I guess I'll just wait and see what the vet recomends.

I had a B/T furgirl years ago who had total baldness as she aged - just peach fuzz, all over her body! Anyhoo - - sending :rayz::rayz::rayz::rayz: for an easy-to-fix problem!

I think you will be saver to take him to the vet. Gunner was about 7 months old when he came down with a small spot on his side, then he got one around the eye and I took him to the vet. The vet treated it as ringworm but a few days later I didn't notice any change and took him back and he did a sraping and it waas red mange-mites (demodex mange) It took quite a while for it to go away with medication.

Well, we took Clyde to the vet yesterday and the vet tested for mites which came back negative. The vet figures that it is something similar to "ear margin dermatosis". Clyde seems to get alot of ear wax built up in his right ear and the vet figures those spots on top of his head are due to Clyde shaking his hear ( I haven't really noticed him doing this much but maybe when we're at work or through the night). When he folded over Clyde's ears, the tips of his ears lined up perfect to the spots on the opposite side from each ear.
He gave us some creme, similar to hydrocortisone creme to put in the ear and then clean out and also on the small bald spots on top. So at least it wasn't mites or ringworm and Clyde was super good in the vet as always!

Lots of :rayz::rayz::rayz: for Clyde's treatment to heal his problem. Happy to learn it was not what was suspected.
Be sure to keep us updated with his progress.
