I have always loved D's little slippers (furry feet). She was laying next to me in "her" chair while I was online searching cameras taking a little nap. Well....I noticed a pair of scissors out on the computer desk. I looked at the scissors and then at her slippers and thought I would just give them a little trim. I should have known better!!!! Her feet now look hideous!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My daughter is going to be so mad at me when she sees what I have done because she loves her slippers too!
The funny thing is that D didn't really even wake up for the "haircut". Her back feet look like they are just stumps now....like I literally cut off one inch of her foot:sorry:.
UH OH.....I've really done it this time!!! Hoping they grow back SOON!!!!

Aawwhh the poor baby. It will grow back soon. Has she seen her paws and thought they looked funny? You know like licking at them. You know that look they give you when they have seen something out of the ordinary.

Haha -- i'm prolly just talking from my "smoothie fan" side, but i think the after pics look better!! LOL

her feets look like feets now instead of extra fuzzley wispies!

I think they look nice... maybe a bit blunt looking, but its hard to clip foots hair with scissors on the best of days.

thats why i love smoothies!

I agree! I like the new clean look. Did you get the section between the big pad on her foot and the one on the back of her leg? That's the section of hair that really makes them slip on smooth surfaces :funny:

aawww Dixie, don't let hoomom embarrass you by saying your feets are hideous! You are still a gorgeous girl. :loveshower: Tell her that I did the same thing to Tucker once and that feets hair grows back very quickly. :bouncy1:

I personally like the "clean feet" look and always have the groomers do Tucker's top and bottom.

You are the only person I heard call them slippers except for a child at a school we were visiting who wanted asked "Why is Josh was wearing fuzzy slippers?"! We call him fuzzy paws as a nickname. I have trimmed them when he gets into mud or wet sand and they are really yuck and they grow back very quickly. I like the fuzzy slipper look and it doesn't seem to bother him; he has no trouble on our smooth floors.

She doesn't seem to notice that anything is different.....other than me looking at her and just laughing!
It was funny when I let her outside....she was trotting along on the cement basketball court we have in the backyard and it looked like she was on her tippy toes!!!:funny:
I always thought she stood more on the backs of her feet BUT now that her slippers are gone she DEFINATELY is not on the backs of her feet...she is tippy toed! I didn't imagine it would make such a difference in the look of her walk!!!!!!!!!!!
I did clip a little out from underneath...not too much though.

I like the fuzzy slippers better so I hope she does too!:0210:

Tell :hearts:Summer:hearts: it will grow back!!! Here is a pic of D when they gave her a hatchet job for her spaying....D's belly hair took a while to grow back in but it did and looks just fine now!

I want to shave Maddie's paws SO bad. She will not tolerate the buzzer thing I bought tho! I occasionally do a very similar hacking job on her paws too.

Cathy,
You are fortunate she laid still while you did it and slept. Ilsa would never let me.

Having Shelties with long hair like that we are used to trimming the hair on their feet. Unless the dog is working at herding or hunting they won't be rubbing the hair off so trimming is a help to our more domesticated pets. We use a small pair of scissors that are pointed and help to get between the pads to trim the hair there easier. The smaller scissors allow more control so you don't knick their pads as well as giving the hair a less blunt look. Its important to keep the scissors sharpened as the duller they get the more they will pull at the hair than cut it.

The LH dachsies are more maintenance but are gorgeous! Compared to the Shelties the dachsies are a breeze! You are welcome to come brush out my Shelties anytime :Sun2:

Your shelties are both GORGEOUS! I loved seeing them at the picnic:bouncy1:....and of course Ilsa also!
Yes, maybe if I had grooming scissors....I was actually using "paramedic/doctor/nurse" scissors that are sort of serated and have a big blunt end on one of the blades so they don't tear into skin with them. They are supposed to be used on bandages....NOT hair or fur:laughitup:.
AND, I would love to brush the shelties but you would NOT want me grooming them as you can see by D's hairdo.:wonky:

Thanks for the compliment on the "boys". The first time I bathed Ilsa Paul said... "What, youre done already??!!" She dried quickly too! Thats what he gets for having dogs with so much hair!:D They are a lot of work but I wouldn't give them up for anything! They are a part of my heart.

I will email you more info on the technique we use for trimming the boys feet between professional groomings.

Dixie girl is the Belle of the Ball. She can bat her eyes at the world and tell them she knows shes a special little girl. :hug2:

I can understand how it feels to do a "hack job". I only tried to trim their ears once and will never do it again, because they looked SO silly!

Socks or no socks, she is still beautiful. :sillylove:

I'm wondering why is it so much better for them? Since she is the little Princess that she is.....she never gets them muddy where the hairs will stick together. She loves the rain but manages to stay away from mud. She is also sure footed on our floors...so I'm just wondering. Is there another reason to keep the hair there short? Thanks.

They really scalped Summer's tummy too.
She has been a lady of leisure the past couple of days, but today she has been pretty spunky.

From what I was told, the fur will partially prevent the pads from building up a nice callous layer. So when they go into the sun, their pads can get burned or hurt easier since they are soft from the fur. I was told this by a groomer and someone who use to show her dogs.

Ok thanks! That sounds reasonable. The "clean" foot is growing on me and our daughter didn't throw a fit like I thought she would since I took her slippers off. So, I might just have to get some electric trimmers....OR would the ones I use on my DH hair work? I always cut his hair so I guess they would. I just won't tell him:laughitup:

During the summer, it is much cooler to not have all the fur between the toes. Her feet are still cute.

I think they look nice trimmed. I have the groomer trim Chief's "toe feathers" (that's what we call them) every few months, and it looks much neater. He won't let me do it though.

Speckles let me trim his nails AND trim his toe feathers, which was very nice for a change. No growling or snarling or doing the oh-my-God-you're-murdering-me dachsie thrash and scream, which Petey does.

Toe feathers grow back in just a few weeks, no worries :D

I always call Dexy's fur there his "Grinch Feet". I do find it so adorable! Everyone laughs when I call it that because he (if brown) really would look like Max from How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

Awwwwww, you have a Dixie too! Mine is a smooth, 8 years old now.

We do have a LH, Pretzel, who is in serious need of a Bunny Slipper Trim. Have been debating whether to just take him to the groomer ($15 for nails and to clean up those toes) or to get clippers and try it myself.

I used to trim my Bear's feet with scissors, but never really got very good at it :wonky:
