We did toenails this morning on Maggie and Kamper.
We use the dremmel. They are pretty good about it. Kampers breeder showed us how to do that when we got him as a pup. The only thing is he will not let us do his front paws with it. I mean he screamsand tries to attack the dremmel. I cant handle it. I get so scared for him. I usually hold them and hubby does the bad part.
We have to stop the dremmel and use the dog nail clipper on them, he hates that too. I just hate this time when we have to do this bad chore to them. Maggie will squirm some but that is about it.
Cosmo goes to the groomers once a month so I dont worry about his toenails. Lord thank goodness I dont think I could handle doing 3 of them.
I cant stand having them seem like they are in pain it just kills me.

I can't do Alfreds. I am afraid I will cut to deep and make him bleed. He gets it done bt the vet.

López too. I wouldn't dare. He acts as if the vet's trying to kill him!

I had always done my other dogs' nails before I got my dachsies. But, because their little nails are black and oblique, and I cannot see the quik, so I don't dare to try. Buddy Lee goes to the vet tomorrow for his third round of vac's, and I can't wait for him to get them clipped.

is a great tool to use. It helps to stop from getting them to short and getting the kwik.
My hubby and parents use to raise dogs and he is use to clipping the nails. He loves the dremmel now though, and only use the nail clipper on Kampers front paws. He puts his finger above the kwik so that he dont cut to deep. Works great no blood yet that we have ever seen.

It still scares me but we have been doing our dogs nails since we have been together for 20 years now and no problems.
If he didnt do it I would definetly be taking them to the vet or the groomer I know I could not do it either.

Last week, in 1/2 hour's time, I was only able to cut 6 of Juney's nails. I was so stressed!
What is the dremmel? Is it that roller-type drill?
I take both of my to the vets and let the techs do it. No stress for me and less for them. Previously on other dogs I have used Oster Prof Groomer (electric), but these two just won't sit still for it. Both are seniors and shelter dogs so have no idea what has happened to them in the past.

That is what the dremmel is. Its like a little sander. That way you dont get them to short. It goes alot faster.
I think Kamper is so sensitive on his front paws that we cannot stand the little bit of vibration.
The back paws are fine with it.

Perhaps if I ever have a helper available I might get brave enough to try a dremmel. My other worry with a dremmel is that two of my boys are longhairs and I worry about catching some hair. One tip in case you ever get a nail too short and don't have any stiptic powder to stop the bleeding, you can use corn starch to help stop the bleeding. I learned that one in my pet first aid class. I used it once before I got the stptic powder and it worked but it also seems more prone to rubbing off and breaking the blood clot than when you use a good stitic powder.
Everyone can get a nail too short from time to time. The one time I resorted to taking Frank to the groomer to have his nams dome ($12 for just a nail job) it took the pros 15 minutes to get his nails done and they did get one or two too short.
