Charlie has been acting very strange lately. He is very timid around other people. When someone goes to pet him *even me or jessi* he runs from them. That's not all though, instead of sleeping on our bed, he gets down and sleeps on the floor, or by the window. He is constantly looking out the window as if someone is coming, or like he needs to protect us. It's very strange and unlike him. This has been going on for a few weeks now and we aren't really sure what's up. Nothing major has been changed in his routine. We want to get him a brother or sister when my new house is done... should we get him sooner?
lemme know.

one other thing, most of this behavior only happens at night when we are getting ready to go to bed...

You must be worried. Have you checked with the vet just in case?
How old is Charlie? López is almost 2 years old and has got progressively more timid and less friendly with strangers as time goes by. Lately he's even barked at people. At night when we are going to bed (he doesn't sleep with us) he gets restless and often starts humping his bed. If we take the bed away he sulks. After a time he settles down and falls asleep. However the only time he avoids our strokes is when he wants something and we're too thick to understand what. Then he dodges our hands and looks at us with an exasperated expression on his face, and often runs to where he wants us to go.
Could there be anything outside that Charlie's obsessed with? A toy? An animal? A female in heat?
Just a suggestion!

The watching the window/doors for strangers is very normal. We've had 2 dachs that have done that. They protect the territory and owners. Our puppy didn't do it at first, but now barks at everything he hears. He is just trying to defend his territory.
The timid part is a little strange if it happens at home. I think a dach will normally bark at strangers, but warm up to them eventually. Away from the home, timid is the behavior we see. If there is no reason for him to be scared, they will normally shy away from adults. Our dogs do bark at children, but normally run from everyone. I don't know why that is. But, in the home, they will bark nonstop at strangers until given a reason to stop (treats can work).
