Ok, it's that time for Augie soon. I really don't want to do this, I know how I'd feel. But, I know it is best. We are not breeding, Aug maybe 100% doxie, but not all one type. A little of everything with longer that usual legs.
My question is what to expect, this is my first male doxie. Is it going to hurt? I know it will but, well I am just the worried Daddy. Stitches, staples, return to normal activity....... What did your boys go through?

Ooooooh Augie Daddy!
I've only had the girls fixed, but I had my male cat neutered and it is easier on the boys than the girls!
What they do is get in there and remove the gonads. Small sack afterwards. Some soreness, but for the most part putting them under anesthesia is hardest.
When they wake up ( cat went home same day, but I insisted!) they are dopey and then after a long drink, fully awake look under "there" and lick a bit...
A few stitches there. The owie heals fast- just keep the baby babied for a few days. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif
Don't feel bad- Augie won't miss them!

Well, speaking as a woman, I can tell you this is no big deal! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif But really, from the point of view of both my boys, it isn't. Both of them acted as if nothing had happened. Farfel had his op first thing in the morning, and when I picked him up at 6 PM, what he was mostly was hungry! He came trotting out as if it were any other day--and he was TWO when he had his snip!
There were no staples or stitches to be removed; whatever was used simply dissolved away. He did lick a bit--probably a little itchy--but other than that, it was a non-event.
Augie will be fine! YOU might want to take a Valium or something.... http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

Rudy nearly caught a squirrel the very weekend he had it done.
We had regular stitches, but he did not chew on them thankfully and getting them taken out took less than 5 minutes. He healed niceley and looks perfect, but it did take a while for his tummy hair to grow back.
It is the best thing you can do for your boy, both for health and for not having a mate-crazed boy everytime a female within several miles is in heat.
Rudy is still the same sweet boy he was before and I have less worries.
If you have a good vet that is used to doing surgery on smaller dogs, it should be a minor quick and safe process. I dropped Rudy off at about 8 in the morning and was able to pick him up at six that evening. He was a lil sleepy and a lil hungry. I slept with him on the couch that night -being that john was worried he'd hurt him if we were all in our bed as usual.
The vet tech even called me when he roused from his nap and said he was doing fine and wanted to get up.
