Hello, for all who dont know i'm getting my dachshund puppy on monday and I was wondering if it would be traumatic for him if I took him to the vet for a general checkup on the same day I picked him up. Should I wait till the next day? Thanks.

Badgers Mom:
I too am fairly new to this board with the addition of our 2 mini's last week, but I will gladly share our experience.
I brought Hannah and Lady home on a Thursday evening and we were at the vet on Friday morning. They did just fine, with the exception of the worm check!!http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/eek.gif
I was just really anxious to make sure that they were healthy. My opinion is that they would be fine.
Can't wait until we hear how Monday went. What a way to start the week!!

I think its a very good idea to take them the same day or at least asap.. because if they have ANYTHING wrong with them the vet can go over it with u and you can confer with the breeder as to weather is genetic or something that she needs to take care of the longer u wait to have the pup seen the harder it is to get most breeders to help if they find something wrong also make sure that u get that health guar. signed sealed and delivered just in case ... im sure the pups are very healthy but its always better to be safe than sorry... Good Luck http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

I completely agree with Jen. Should your vet find any problems the sooner things can be resolved the better. Minimize any potential heart break. I'm sure Badger will be just fine.
One tip to help little Badger settle down that first night home. I remember from my folks dachshunds (all my adult life buddies have been older rescues Frank the youngest at 6 months) is a hot water bottle wrapped in a blanket surer helped settle them down.
Keep informed on Badger. Don't worry about posting too often or asking too many questions that's part of being a new parent.
Badger, it looks like you should have a good home your aren't even there yet and you mom is asking question to try and do the right things for you.
Good luck,
Tom, Frank, and Tanner

You also might want to put a ticking alarm clock somewhere near Badgers crate at night to help him sleep this along with the warm water bottle like dutchman suggested this will remind him of his mother heartbeat and will help ease him to sleep.... Good Luck cant wait to hear more about your little one http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

I found a lamb stuffed animal at Goodwill. When I got home, I found out it was really a hand puppet. What a good place to put a ticking alarm clock!

Hi,
At PetSmart I saw a really cute thing for puppies. It is a lifesize fuzzy puppy and the little "heart" beats and also warms up to puppy temperature. It is sort of like a "stuffed littermate".....
Best of luck to you and congratulations on your new addition. Please keep us posted with his progress...

Thanks for all your replies, I have a appointment for him on tuesday. I would be completely shocked if there was anything wrong with him, cause I trust his breeder but I'm gonna have him checked up just in case.
Being a student I dont have either a clock that isn't electric or a hot water bottle.http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/emb.gif I do have a big comfy fleece blanket that smells like me and a whole bumch of toys (Everytime I see another dog toy or treat i have to get it, my fiance thinks I'm crazy http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif). That ticking "puppy" sounds really cute, I'll probably have to get it. As is the puppet where you put the clock. Thnks all.

Hey, Badger's Mom (almost)! Just wanted to add my best wishes to you and the new boy! I"m really envious! I haven't had a new puppy for 12 years! Let us know how the first day goes--you'll be totally smitten with the little guy in no time, I'm sure!
Best of luck!

Jen,
Those little "stuffed littermates" are about the size of a 12wk old puppy, maybe a little larger than that. They are flat so that the puppy can snuggle right on it to feel the heartbeat and then will trigger it to warm-up. I thought they were really cool. I wished I had seen them when I first got Willi.
