My husband and I are investigating insurance for Penny. We can insure her for $120 - $130 per year - (the basic plan, illness or injury only, not routine care). Her seizures are a 'pre-existing condition' and we can't apply right now because she had surgery so recently. I am wondering if the insurance is really a good deal or if there are too many loopholes to be much help to us. Any one out there have pet insurance? Are you happy with it or would we be better off just building the old savings account back up again?

Ask for a sample copy of the policy & read it carefully. If you need help, ask your local agent, but most policies should have a "translation" in plain English of what is covered. If that doesn't come with it, ask for it. Keep asking until all your questions are answered.

The policy is pretty clear, no routine care covered (not even dental) but injuries and illnesses are covered up to a couple of thousand dollars per year. (Actually there are policies that cover routine care but of course the premiums are a little bit pricier.) There didn't seem to be any loop holes - We're just wondering if the premiums are a worthwhile investment, or if we'd be better off just building up our savings account to deal with another emergency or injury!
If the many "multiple dachsie families" on this board aren't investing in insurance, than maybe we're just over reacting to our first year of life with a dog! Between rushing to the vet because of seizures, and now the surgery last week for a bowel obstruction, we're getting the feeling that Penny's as expensive as our 2 legged kids! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smile.gif
Maybe I should just think positive and plan on the next 15 years as being catastrophe free!
