Willi had his yearly check-up and shots. About 4 hours after I noticed his little face was swollen. I have him a dose of Benadryl as per the Vet. The swelling came down some and then an hour later he was worse than he was at the initial reaction. As per the Vet, I gave him more Benadryl and now I just wait. We need all the rayz that we can get.

Thanks,
Kris

Kris,

Mickey is REALLY allergic to vaccinations too. The first time I noticed this was his first set of vaccinations right after we got him. Within an hour of the shots, he started itching all over and then he blew up like a balloon...all over his body. He was so swollen, he looked like a shar-pei...and I'm not exaggerating. I had no idea what the problem was and was just panic stricken.

Thankfully, I know my vet personally so I drove right to his house. We went right to his office and he gave Mickey something to help. And then I had to do the Bendadryl for another day...and then Mickey was fine.
Phew!

So now, everytime Mick needs a vaccination, I have to give him some Benadryl BEFORE he goes, so he has some in his system. And then I remind them that he has reactions to shot. I think they changed the brand they gave thim...and since that time, I've never had another problem with it.

I'd make sure they know which shot caused the reaction, so they don't use that brand again. And I would give Willi some Benadryl before you go. That should help.

Poor Willi! He must have been so uncomfortable. I hope he's feeling better today.

Karen.....shar-pei is the right description. He scared me half to death....

Willi is doing much better today, he is still a little puffy but not as bad as yesterday. It was either the rabies (which he had last year with no problem) or the DHPPC booster (last year he was just a puppy and did not have any trouble with those shots at all). I am guessing it was the booster, but I am going to talk to my Vet to see what he thinks.

Do u know if the shots they gave Willie had Lepto in them ... Small dogs have a hard time with that vaccine esp. dachshunds... we dont live in a area where we need lepto so my vet just doesnt give the the 7way he gives the small dogs the 6way insted and we have had No reactions with any of the dogs. Also some dogs have touble with the shot they give for Lyme ... good luck i hope Willies gets to feeling better this morning http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

One of my folks deckhands had sever reactions to her rabies shots. It took the vet about four times trying a different brand each time to find one that she didn't have a reaction to. This is why it's important (especially with a new dog) to make sure you will be around for a couple of hours after they get a shot. Generally if the reaction is seer it will start to show up rather soon. In my folks case the reaction hives and swelling were sever enough it could have been fatal if we hadn't called the vet who had us rush her right back over. Once a vet is aware of the problem things can generally be managed fairly easily the biggest danger would be if no one was around to observe the reaction when it happens. Good luck Willi I hope you don't have the same reaction next time.

Frankie puffed up after his vaccination too ... but fortunately? we were at the vet for Oscar's broken foot when the reaction started. He was given a shot of something and was ok. I guess it's pretty common to have a reaction.

I'm glad that Willi is feeling better. He needs lots of treats to make a full recovery, says Frankie.

Yes, I believe the treatment for allergies & other things is lots of treats, esp cheese.

Getting your pupper's shots in the morning is an excellent idea, for quick fixes if there are problems.

Not only can Lepto cause a reaction, a lot of the vaccines are produced using eggs. If your dog is allergic to eggs, he can also be allergic to the vaccines made that way.

Since some reactions can be so severe, esp if the dog has had the problem before, I would give the Benedryl, then IMMEDIATELY get the vet office on the phone & tell them what is happening. That way, if you need help you know they are there, & they are aware that you might need further help.

PLEASE let me remind you to NEVER, EVER run for the vet in an emergency without calling first. Vets have family, meetings, etc, & sometimes leave the office. That is NOT the time to run in with a dog that isn't breathing.

Kris,

I didn't see this post. Poor Willi!

The same thing happened to my Dottie last year. Scared the daylights out of me. Her eyes swelled shut and we rushed her back to the vet.

Benedryl did the trick.

Hang in there Willi!

Anyway, I've mentioned this to the vet and sofar he hasn't had another reaction other than a little lump under the skin from it.

I let the vet give him the shot now!

You see this is what I love about this board....so many shared experiences even the scary ones. I was worried sick in May because Shelbie had her booster shot and then about four hours later puffed up like a balloon. I ran all the way to the vets and they gave her something and kept her in for a couple of hours and then she was fine. (Would have been even better if you'd have given me more biscuits Mum, signed Shelbie). Hope Willie is feeling much better now, love Shelbie's Mum

Thanks guys for all the rays......Willi is back to normal....chasing cats, eating the cat's food....etc.

I never realized that other people have had this problem. I still have a lot of questions for the vet so that poor Willi won't have to have this happen again.

Thanks again,

So glad Willi is himself again. Danny also is a "new man" after his cortisone shot and his antibiotics. Who else for good news?
PS: We missed you and Willi at Dachsie Day also G
