I went and picked up Porscha, (formally Puchi) who was listed on Craigslist.

She is down, but on steroids and stomach medication. She started wagging her tail yesterday. My vet said to wait and see if the steroids and crate rest work and to bring her back if it looks like she is getting worse.

We have been doing the crate rest and meds with only potty breaks.

She is a very sweet girl. I joined Dodger's List and have been reading all the posts.

Keep your fingers crossed for her. She is very thin (I can see very rib and her spine clearly), and is just starting to come out of her shell and trust us.

:thanx::thanx::thanx: for saving her life! What a cute name. If you've never had a "down" dachsie before, or even if you have, please join www.dodgerslist.com -- it's a wonderful web site for dogs who are temporarily or permanently paralyzed and you will learn a LOT! If you're not doing it, please give Pepcid AC 30 minutes prior to the prednisone and pain medication; some dogs have very severe tummy issues from prednisone and you don't want to deal with internal bleeding. Again -- THANK YOU for saving her life. Many of us have dealt with downed dachsies so if you have questions, we will also try to help. Wagging her tail is a VERY encouraging sign. Did you learn how to express her bladder and bowels?? Sending many recovery :rayz::rayz::rayz::rayz::rayz:!! And also -- :dbb_welcome:!! (Ooooops -- I see you have joined Dodgerslist and have her on stomach medication - good for you!!!) She is a pretty furgirl! My Jack has just come back from being down; I took him for acupuncture and chiropractic treatment and he improved incredibly well -- he was also on prednisone and pain meds, too. If you can get it, acupuncture can work miracles!:goodluck:

she sure is a sweetie. Just look at those eyes. Thank you for rescuing her. I agree with you - the son should be the one discarded, not the dog!

Skyler said to tell her she has a magic blanket. We have that same blanket and he LOVES it when he's feeling bummer. Makes him feel all better, he said so.

I have been so busy I haven't updated anyone on Porsche!

We let Porsche out of her crate on New Year's Eve. We only let her have short times out of the crate for the first week or so. She was able to walk but walked like she was drunk. We have a hal in the house and the poor thing would walk into the wall on one side and then the other as sh went down it. She was terrified of the doggie door for about a month. I had to push her out and then push her back in. She finally got used to the dog door around the first of February. Her walking gradually improved and now she just loses her balance and goes down once in a great while. She is running and playing with the other two doxies, and has a blast. She has a little grey stuffed animal she carries everywhere in her mouth. I think she is amazed that she sleeps in her own dog bed, has a toy of her own and eats everyday. Gradually she is turning into a little doxie girl instead of a starved, scared, abused baby.

We took her back to the vet 13 days ago to get spaded. He hadn't seen her since the first of January and was amazed with her progress.

Now on to the new problem. Due to all the neglect we discovered she came to us with ear mites. We only discovered this recently because she felt good enough to start shaking her head. Before that we just thought she had dirty ears from the neglect Sigh.

So for the next six weeks all three of my doxies get their ears cleaned with the mediication the vet sold us. Poor Porsche goes around shaking her head all the time. I feel so bad for her. The boys shook their heads for a few days, but now their ears look clean and we are down to cleaning their ears every other day. Porsche hates to get her ears done, but it has to be. Has anyone else ever had to deal with ear mites in dogs? If so, do you have any ideas how to make this easier for her? They will go away if we do what the ve said right?

Here are a couple of pictures of Porsche taken around the first of February. She is getting a bath Saturday when her stiches come out and I will post couple more pictures of her then.

Great update! We always need good posts like this!

With ear mites, the uncomfortable itchy part will go away pretty soon on medication. Just have to keep treating them through the full course to make sure all of the little critters are dead and gone.
