View Full Version : I'm a failure!

And I never knew how good it would feel to fail! I have officially decided to adopt my foster Oliver! I was contacted about fostering him and the rescue was at it's witt's end because he would growl and snap and hump everything in sight. I was his 7th home in his 4 short years of life. I didn't expect to fall in love, it just happened the moment that goofy boy walked in my home and peed on my floor! (The only time it's happened!).

In my home, he's a relaxed, loving sweet boy. No issues. Not one snap, only one growl (when I told him to stop destuffing his toy and then tried to take it from him but that was easily corrected).

He actually reminds me so much of my dearly departed Sydney. Syd was a tough cookie. I didn't realize how difficult he was until I fostered other doxies with "issues" and found them easy!

I love my big goof! I knew it had to be when I was contacted by a friend of a friend regarding adopting a doxie and I was trying to figure out when they could come over and meet Oliver and Ken responded with a resounding "NO". I said "Why, Oliver needs a home." Ken said, "He is home.".

And the kids all get along famously (furkids that is). They are also all great on walks (yes, I walk 3 at a time).

So I'm now going to add a beautiful Long haired red 4 year old to my house (am I crazy?).

So without further adieu here is My Ollie Boy

In all honesty, I think I may have saved his life. His options were dwindling and very limited. The thing is my home is boring! Not lots of kids running around, shreiking, not lots of people over, not alot of chaos. I have mellow dogs who aren't "bouncing off the walls". This type of atmosphere I think really helps dogs that are very sensitive to the "vibes" around them and they act like angels in my home.

He is good with kids but with too much kid energy, he gets too excited, decides to "hump" and then when you try to get him to stop, he would growl and snap. He had bitten before too.

He LOVES people too. He's never met a stranger. His my sweet goofy boy! I'm just so happy he's going to be ours!

Welcome home, Ollie. And welcome to Foster Failure. When it hits, it is a good feeling and it happens to all of us. No, you are not crazy. Ollie belongs with you and Ken and he knew where he wanted to be. Congrats on your new furkid. Maybe he was misbehaving elsewhere because he needed to get to your home.

It is possible that is why he was misbehaving! I think one of the reasons I've done so well with fostering is that I have my rules and expectations of every dog that comes through my door regardless of their past. I'm very matter of fact with them and slightly distant, they must earn their affection with me. And I've had nothing but fantastic fosters! Ken is the softie, I'm the enforcer. And I think that style and routine really helps the fosters greatly.

Ken is getting him for me for a belated birthday gift (birthday Jan 17 so it's really late, don't ask! Lol!).

He acts like he's always been part of the family, not one ounce of hesitation on his part with us. He loves to play (the others really don't play with humans) and we play like I used to do with Syd with the "I got your butt" game where he'll run close to me and I try to grab his tushie and then he runs through the house. He LOVES it and he also will howl if I say "Where's my weenie dog? just like Syd used to. The similarities are quite shocking between the two to say the least. But that doesn't mean I don't love him for who he is regardless of being similar to Syd. He's much goofier than Syd ever was (Syd had a dignified air about him, maybe that's where Dex picked that up but Dex is more snobby) but the love of people, fearlessness, stubborness is almost a carbon copy of Syd.

I think Syd knew I was missing him so much that he sent Oliver to me. I love my other dogs with all my heart but the cockiness and confidence of Syd was just amazing to behold. I missed his swagger.

:yay::yay: Oh Amy you have made my day with this news! I am so happy for all of you...I agree - it was truly meant to be! I'm sure that Sydney is smiling up in the Bridge and it sounds like this is the perfect home for Ollie! :ranchwelcome: home Ollie!! :yay:

It's funny, I was just about to post this very sentiment, Oliver was sent as a gift from Syd.

God bless you for saving him. Your house sounds alot like mine, quiet (boring?) and very good for a little soul like Oliver who needs quiet and understanding. Your husband Ken sounds like my Dan, he would be the first to make sure the pups are safe and sound (besides me of course). He will not kennel our dogs, that is why they go everywhere with us, all 3 of them.

I just finished checking out cabins so that we can take all 3 to the NEOD picnic next July, and think I've found one.

Congratulations! There really are dogs that are meant to be where they are. Brady fit in so well with my guys that there was no way he could leave. Lucy even gets upset when she does not have her boy puppy to play with.

Ok, how did you know? Am I that transparent? I was all set not to like him thinking he was going to be a major troublemaker and then I get this willful, bratty boy with goofiness galore instead!

What's so funny is Ken thinks these pics "Do NOT do him justice at all!" Oliver is so much cuter. And of course he is but they are good pics nonetheless.

It's never failure when anyone makes the choice to bring someone into their lives to love forever. I consider that success. He succeeded in finding his forever Mommy. :)

Nope.. you're not crazy either. I think it's beautiful. Makes my day. Congratulations on realizing he had already adopted you. Hehe

Ollie has definitely added to the comedy of the household. For instance yesterday (the day we decided to adopt him) he decided it would be fun to dig underneath the deck. Well it has been raining here in PA (seems like forever) so it was a bit muddy. The best part about it is that it happened when Ken was home and I was at work . So Ollie comes in covered head to tail with mud, it looked like he was mud wrestling.

So Ken had to give him a bath! The exclaimation point is there because Ken never gives a dog a bath and instead that is my area. (And apparently so is cleaning the tub after the mud, but I digress )

Then they were all snuggling on the couch and Oliver apparently snuck away and got the half eaten hummus container from the side table and opened the lid and began to partake. When Ken realized Oliver was covered in hummus, his face, paws, you name it. Then began the mad dash through my house to get the hummus away from him.

I get home and ask how the (fur)kids were. Ken proceeds to tell me that Oliver was a bad, bad boy laughing while he said it and told me about the day's events. Ken said he knew he won us over and was home so now he's acting up!

Congratulations, Amy! He is a beautiful boy, and a great addition to your family. Since he had been bounced around to so many homes prior to you getting him, it is probably a very very good thing that he is staying with you permanently. It sounds like he needed a very special kind of environment and you are it.

I don't consider it a failure, but rather a success for this one dog!
