My wife took Wolfie for his shots yesterday, and I almost had heart failure when she said he weighed 8 pounds, and he's only 14 weeks old!

I'm beginning to think breeders don't really know how much their dogs weigh--I was told that Wolfie's mother was 11 pounds and that his father was 12 pounds, but at this rate it looks like Wolfie will exceed those weights by a good bit.

So, to those of you who have had your babies since they were pups, how much did yours weigh at 14 weeks, and how much do they weigh now?

I know that they're all different, but I wanted to get an idea of what I can expect. I'm pretty sure he won't be a mini, but will he be a tweenie or a standard?

Jackson is 16 weeks old and he weighs 8.5 lbs. He was sold to us as a miniature. I dont know if he is gonna be the ideal 11lbs. at full growth. Hey, but who cares? He my little pup!

I had one puppy that was supposed to be a miniature and she reached 11 lbs at 6 months. She was about 18 lbs full grown. but I could have cared less. She was one of the most wonderful dogs I've ever had.

Based on the responses so far, I should probably clarify my intent in starting this thread. I love my boys and don't care how big they get, just as long as they stay trim and healthy.

My main point was that we sought out miniature Dachshunds, but because the breeders were obviously not accurate with the weights of the parents, we are not going to end up with what we expected.

We were told that Max's parents were 8 and 6 pounds, but he's now a very trim 12 pounds at about 8 months of age. We would have never expected him to be this heavy based on what we were told, but we wouldn't trade him for the world! I don't remember him being as heavy as Wolfgang at 14 weeks, so I asked about other people's experiences so I could get an idea of how big Wolfie will be when he's grown.

Again, I love my puppers and wouldn't trade them for the world!!!

I've been told that miniature dachshunds, being bred out of standards, can have throwbacks. Which means that you can have two 6 to 8 lbs. dogs that produce a pup which grows up to be a considerably larger than the parents. Some of our members who breed might be able to tell us more.

Buddy Lee's breeder said that his sire was seven pounds. I saw him, he was a little smaller than Gidget and a whole lot thinner. Buddy Lee is turning 6 mos old, and weighs just over eight pounds. But, to me he doesn't look as big as his Dad did. I don't know how much his mom weighed.

When is a mini usually considered fully grown, anyway? Gidget's been the same size since she was about 8 mos. She's just filled out a little.

That your boy is going to be a little bigger than expected. I looked at my records and Maddy didn't hit eight pounds until she was six months old. She is now sits right at eleven pounds (unless she has been visiting her grandma, in which case she weighs closer to thirteen when we get her back).

There will just me more to love, huh?;)

I would love to be able to sit down and type in the ages and weights of my girls, but I didn't think of doing that until Brekke! All of my girls have had miniature parents, and Siglen is the only one who is a "Tweenie" - she weighed 18 pounds before her diet, and now she weighs 14, which is a good weight on her. The others weighed 11 pounds at 1 year - which I have read is considered "the adult size". Brekke weighed 1.7 pounds at 9 weeks, 1.9 at 12 weeks, 2.2 at 15 weeks, and 2.6 at 4 months when she got her rabies shot. At 1 year, she weighed 10.5 pounds, and her parents weigh 10(mom) and 11(dad) pounds. I have no idea if this is any help - as you say - every dog is different! Julia B.

 OK, time for a little secret that really isn't a secret to those of us that are honest but serious breeders. There is NO WAY to guarantee that any puppy of miniature breeding is going to STAY a miniature. Sorry! We all wish there was a way to guarantee that but there isn't. The genetic fairy godparents continually jump up and bite us every time we try and say 'THIS ONE will stay under 11 pounds <g>'. No matter what the parents weigh .... it has no bearing on what the puppies will eventually be. I know, y'all always ask as if it will be some miraculous guarantee but it won't be :)
And truthfully, you would be amazed at how many breeders still ask the question of those of us that have stud dogs...how much does he weigh when they should be asking 'what did his last litter grow up to weigh?' THAT is the proof of the sire...somewhat since the dam has a say in it too!

When Juney was 13 weeks old, she was 5 lbs 2 oz. She was almost 8 lbs when she turned 6 months old, and by a year she was 11 lbs.

I took Hermione to her first visit to the vet since coming to live with us (she was seen by a vet before we brought her home). At 9 weeks, she weighs in at 3.7 lbs. I was shocked! I my "guesstimate" would have been closer to 2.5 lbs.

The vet pronounced her adorable and healthy. One shot, a mouthful of dewormer, a heartworm tab and we were done.

Need to make note of this on my calendar so I can keep track.

It's so much fun to compare!:circle:

We got Alfred from not a very good breeder. My parents bought him for me and bless their hearts they didn't know any better and went to a backyard breeder. Anyway he was supposed to be a mini and he now weighs 21 pounds!

Joy,

Your vet has you giving heartworm pills already? To a 9 week old puppy? Wow, for me that was a lot of *stuff* in one visit....I love her name!!!!

Cindi, you are so right about size. You don't have a clue what you will get. My 9 lb Laila and 10 Darby produced a son that at 1 1/2 year old weighs 18 lbs and he is not fat. He is just big. He looks like a standard. Hmm, 18 lb, could be!
