View Full Version : When did you see any progress?

My puppies are still extremely young (3 and 3 1/2 months), so I know it's way too early to be making much progress in the housebreaking area, but I am just curious about when you first saw any noticeable progress.
Baxter and Bailey are crated during the day with frequent breaks, and do great. They are also crated at night and will go almost 10 hours then. But while they're out, it's squat and pee as soon as the urge hits. We're not really sniffing around yet, and not making any noticeable (at least that I can notice) sign that they need to go.
When did your pups first start showing signs, and what is the first sign that they might be clueing in a bit? Will they start to whine to go out, go to the door, something else?
Just curious to know what I should be looking for down the road.
Thanks!

I don't really look for signs... I just don't give them the chance to potty on the floor.
The first week with Woody was bad. I was trying to take him out every hour on the hour... wasn't working in the least. I have moved it to every 30-45 minutes and it has been working pretty good! Woody and Jake go out together. Usually Jake doesn't have to go... but he goes along for the trip and gets a treat when woody potties outside!
We went for almost 72 hours without an accident in the house. I was pretty proud of the little man.
As I was typing this... I noticed it was 35 minutes since they had been out... so out we went... and Woody and Jake both pottied!
It is hard work.. you have to get a routine down with it... once they get used to it... it will click.
Woody now knows that when he potties and comes in... he gets a treat. He RUNS to the part of the counter that has his treats on em!
Woody is 11 weeks old tomorrow... so it's not out of the question for your little ones to be very close to "getting it"!
Good Luck!

You must have a routine potty schedule and try to stick to it as best you can. I just got my Cannoli a b/t mini she is 9 weeks and doing great. I put her in her pen when I am at work 8 hrs with pads down so she can go. When I am home I watch her religiously and rely on a schedule to help me see the signs for her to go. She has explored my living room enough so if I see her at all put her nose down to sniff for more than a couple of seconds outside she goes (better to be safe then sorry). For example I take her out first thing in the morning (she is crated all night) and do not bring her in until she does #1 & #2. Then I feed her, let her play for about 30 min or so, then take her out again until she does at least #2. Then I place her in her pen with the pads until I get home. I taking her out about every 1.5 hrs or so.
I have had her for two weeks and have never owned a dog before and still we have had no accidents. I am expecting to have some but I will not let her play unhooked from me unless I am sure she has gone recently. It takes a lot of vigilance, and you should almost be paranoid about it and get her out as many times physically possible. Remember this motto “Input then Output” if they eat or drink a lot then they poop and pee a lot!
