I am considering a move cross country.... (MA to WA) I want Gateway to come with me....I am terrified of him flying in the cargo hold. (he is to large to ride under my seat with me) and I also have to change planes in Salt Lake City. I am afraid this is the only way I can get him there with me....Anyone have any insight into this.....Have you done it with your pet??? I am flying Delta and they do accept him....also cabin is pressurized etc...I will also check with Vet but just wondering if any of you have done this and what the outcome was....

I have flown dogs 3 different times and I know for certain I used Delta on 2 of them and I am pretty sure that Daphne flew Delta too but I can't remember for certain. They are very good. Especially if you are flying with him. The dog is the last thing loaded into the cargo area and the first thing off. He will probably be off the plane and in the pickup area before you get off the plane. The cargo area is pressurized and temp controlled when animals fly in it. Every time I flew dogs they had plane switches and a couple of them had more than one and they are very conscientious when they move the dog from plane to plane. Like I said before he will probably be off one plane and ready to go to the next one before you even get off the one your on. I prefer Delta over any other airline for flying pets as cargo. It just seems as if they are more professional and seem to care more about the animal than the $$.

Daphne was flown Delta...In Salt Lake the holding area for the animals is climate controlled so that is a plus...Will there be enough time during your layover for Gateway to get from plane to plane? I would make sure there is at least an hour..We had to have an hour on both of Daphne's layovers...She made it from Montana to Mississippi ok..

The sad/scary/bad part is by the time she got here she had no more water left in her crate and I wasnt sure how long she had been without, she had pottied all in the crate and it was all over her and everything else, and she was terrified...The planes have to be really loud to dogs ears and the ride is never 100% smooth...Also they are handled by strangers...She was terrified of her crate for weeks afterwards..

The good news is that she made it safe and sound other than the above..I love having her here and she got over being scared of the crate and a bath was an easy thing to handle..

Do you think he is too big to fly cabin with another airline?

I would def only recommend Delta if you fly him cargo..They did seem to care more about the animals than other airlines...

Tish,
Are you sure Gateway's too big? We took Coco and Chanel to AZ two yrs ago and we took them in cabin, and they were right under the seat in front of us. But if you do have to put him in cargo, the best airline to do it with is Delta. Both Coco and Chanel came up from Atlanta by Delta, and they were terrific with them. Good luck!

I wonder if you were willing to buy another seat if they would let the dogs fly that way. I can't fly, but my girls have no problem traveling in their Great Dane sized crate. It almost fills the entire back seat, and I drive a big Olds.

The other thing to remember is the time of year. If you have a choice, avoid August (hot and dry in SLC and in MA) and then the big winter months, just in case. Any reason you wouldn't drive? When we moved coast to coast (and during the 3 interstate moves), we drove because we were keeping our cars, we had pets, and there are some things you just don't want to pack! If you want to PM me, I can give you a few pointers about moving companies etc. Anyway good luck in making your decision.

Mia flew to Colorado with me this summer. She is 22" long, thus two inches longer than she is "supposed to be" to fly in the cabin, but since she fit in her soft carrier under the seat in front of me and was a perfect girl (as always), American airlines had no problem with her flying in the cabin. She just went to sleep and didn't even make a mess in her carrier. I gave her water from my water bottle frequently whenever she was awake, and took her to potty between changes of planes. You can use potty pads and take him into the bathroom with you in his carrier for this. Dispose of the used potty pads in the diaper changing area. I see no reason for a slightly longer sweet doxie not to fly. You can take him to the airport a day or so ahead of your flight to check with the airline. That's what I did. Made flight day less stressful.
P.S. - Oh, yes, and when I was packing my suitcase to come home I had her carrier sitting out also and guess what? She went right into it and looked at me like, "If you're going, I'm going, too!" So she suffered no trauma from flying, that's for sure. She will get into that carrier any time I put it down. She likes going places.

Our little Muffin has been flying for 6 years now, and that's twice a year too! We usually try to get direct flights as it makes it much easier on all of us. We (too) just open the door to her "Sherpa" carrier and in she goes. No problem! She does have to fly under the seat in front of you and they can not be taken out at all during the flight. Muffin is excellent in the air and never makes a sound. She curls up and goes right to sleep. Once we land, I usually have to wake her up (but then again, she is a professional sleeper ). I have never found an airlines that will let you buy a seat for them. I know that a couple of times we had to sign a Waiver that said we would be fined if we let her out during the flight.

I only had 1 problem with the people sitting next to me on the plane. As they boarded, (I always get on first when they announce "people needing assistance" can get on first) I had Muffin in her Sherpa on my seat. I lifted it up so they could squeeze past me and the lady (and I use that word loosely) made a comment to her husband how she thinks it is disgusting that people bring their pet's on the plane. I said excuse me, are YOU talking to ME?? She said no, I'm talking to my husband. I said Oh that's a GOOD thing, because if you'd rather sit next to my Mom's Urn, I can arrange that too! She was mortified!! (Oh yes, I'm a little sink pot when it comes to intollerance!). As they said in the movie Dirty Dancing, "Nobody put's Baby in the corner!" The lady (:POOP:) never made a sound or moved an inch the entire flight! I paid more for Muffin's ticket to fly than I did for my own, so she had every right to be on that flight!!
