I have had my Doxie for a week now and when I first got him (he's 2.5 years old), he always lifted his leg to pee. I have noticed that since yesterday, he has started squatting instead of lifting his leg! We have no other dogs so he hasn't learned the behavior from any females. Why would he change that on his own?

Sorry I don't know the answere to that one.
But I do know if they are neutered at a young age they sometimes have less of a chance that they lift there leg.
Unless they are a real dominent male or female too!
(I had a female poodle that would lift her leg.)

Seriously, some boys do squat. My parent's female poodle was raised from puppyhood around their 7 year old male. You should have seen her - she squatted on her rear left leg and lifted her right rear leg to potty! The squat part was always first, then the lifted leg. Julia B.

Maybe he is feeling more comfortable in his new home and no longer feels that he has to mark. I notice with "marks a lot number one and two" (Bucky and Ziggy) that whenever something in their lives change, like I bring another foster in, we start marking again. Otherwise, squatting is fine. I don't know why he would change like that, but I don't think it's unusual for males to squat. Both my boys do it--Max has only lifted his leg once, to mark a tree in the back yard. When he did that, we were all excited, thinking he was finally going to start peeing like a boy! :D But, he hasn't done it since. We had a Pekingese a few years ago, and he squatted, too.

he ONLY squatted...but now...almost 3 years later..he RARELY does it. The only thing that we possibly think could be the reason was he was recently neutered right before we got him..just a guess though.

Thanks for the commensts. I wasn't concerned about it, just thought it was peculiar that he would change like that. It's funny because when I take him out, he squats, but when my boyfriend takes him out, he lifts his leg. Which means my boyfriend gets the easier job because its easier to see him lift :) I have to pay more attention!

I have no clue why some squat and some lift the leg. We have had 2 dachs. The first (Otto) was purely a squatter. He was a little rotund as he got older and may have had a bit of trouble lifting it. Or, he just may not have learned.
We now have a puppy (Sam) and he lifts his leg always. We got him at 4 months and he just did it. He was neutered at about 5 months of age, and he still lifts his leg. It's not just for marking, it's every single time he pees. I expect him to continue doing it till he probably gets too old or it isn't comfortable to him.
