View Full Version : Is your doxie's good with other dogs?

Mine are good with most all other dogs. Except the bigger ones they think they can kick their butt...:fierce: I have a hard time conviencing them that they are alot smaller than the lab or other big dogs. It just upsets me when we go for walks that these other dogs are running loose. I really wish folks would be more responsible for their pets.

I agree with that. Sometimes I get so tired of having to defend my dogs when they are on leash and get jumped by big dogs running loose. Bogart, Cash and Amanda are pretty good with most dogs. Miller, on the other hand, is good with other dachshunds and smaller dogs, but not good with larger dogs. He's convinced he's an 80 lbs rottweiller!

Jake is good with most other dogs. He is usually the big barker of the group (that shock anyone? :D)
Woody is a little more timid at first... but has been pretty accepting of most other dogs. Took him about 10 minutes to get used to the pugs a neighbor has :) I think it was the snorting that threw him... but he wanted to play with everyone before the end of the meeting :)

Heide, you described my Otto to a T. Heck, even Gertrude is starting to chase the big dogs. Otto barks at the giant dogs and gets Gert goin too. When the stampede begins, Gert comes running back to me to pick her up and Otto is running right behind her.

But will find out on Friday. They are starting doggy daycare once a week precisely to get them socialized to other dogs. The excercise will be helpful too, but I really want to get them used to getting along with other dogs.

She can be intimedating to a shy dog. She runs right up like they are a dear old friend! If a dog does not like her she will try everything she can think of to "win them over". She usually can. There is a Rott next door that is chained out a lot. They have never been close to each other. Willow barks her head off at it and acts tough. I don't know what would happen if the met "face to face" AND I HOPE I NEVER FIND OUT! (The Rott does not look friendly.)

Well, Timber's good with most dogs his own size, but if he encounters a large dog, say a German Shepherd, he goes a little...crazy. But if the other dog gets closer to Timber, Timber will usually roll on his back and show extreme submissive behaivor. He's even intimidated by puppies. ::shakes head::

Misty is a brave soul and loves all dogs. On some big dogs she will roll on her back belly up and wriggle her legs..it's so funny. Misty submissive? Other big dogs she will give love bites...explain that to the goldie last weekend on a walk she encountered. The goldie did not know what to make of a dog as big as his head.
Magic is very shy and will not greet big dogs. On puppies and small dogs though she will greet and "talk" to them. It's so funny she sounds like a cat. The only big dog she likes is the basset hound across the road....I still have not figured that one out.

Bogart is pretty friendly and gets along with most dogs. Cash gets along pretty well, unless they want his toy then he has to growl at them. Miller gets along with small dogs, but feels that he has to lunge and growl at all big dogs. That's one of the reasons we're going to obedience school!

López gets on well with pretty much any dog, male, female, big small...EXCEPT big dominant males, especially if they stare or growl at him, that's when we have to grab on to him to stop him going for them. I don't think Dachsies actually realise how small they are!
Also if he's carrying a toy he won't tolerate big male dogs going near him, no matter if the toy isn't his! There's only one big male that he automatically shows submission to, and that's a neighbour's Husky (who LOVES López but thinks he's a toy and he's a little rough with him).
As López is generally off the leash he's used to going up to other dogs to say hello and wag tails.

Roxy has gotten along with every dog she has met Except Border Collies! I don't know why, but she will growl and her hackles go up when she sees a Border Collie. The funny thing is she has gone up to a Great Dane, and a Pitbull in Petsmart wagging her tail wanting to make friends. It must be something in her past, I know she lived in the country before I got her and I am sure there were Border Collies in the town she lived in.

With my two it depends... They ignore small dogs, they are nice to sick/old dogs, they are good with puppies, they will try and kill the neighbors Husky who looks like a woolf, they are intimidated by large dogs ever since a lab came running out of a yard and scared the sh•• out of my poor little doggies. Which is a pitty, because before that they were fine with large dogs
 Again, why can't people control their big dogs?
Tasha's Mom
11-01-2004, 03:08 PM
Tasha was clearly never socialized in her first home. She runs from EVERY dog we meet, from Chihuahuas to Great Danes. Except for dogs under the scaffolding near our house, which she decided she has to guard, as its part of her territory. Then she barks at all others, regardless of size.
She ignores other dachsies, and will try to bolt into the street if we have to pass too close to another dog on the sidewalk. And in NYC we pass a lot of dogs on every walk. Her six weeks of obedience class didn't help, even though there was a 20 min off leash play time at the start of each class, during which she tried to hide behind us--hoodad and I had to stay pressed against a wall so she couldn't get behind. And this was the small dog class.
She did tolerate one dachsie during her only playdate in the park. But she didn't interact with him, just ignored him. Sigh.

Buddy loves almost every dog he sees. If he doesn't go nutso, I figure there is something he is picking up on. He's not afraid of most dogs, except one neighbor dog and trust me, I am terrified of her. She'd eat me and have him for dessert if she could. He does freak most larger dogs out though. I think he gets so excited, he's a bit overwhelming and then he's so small compared to them, I think they worry about hurting him. But he's a loveable guy, even though a tad too hyper at first.

Trenyce likes all dogs and will walk right up to them, big or small. Except when we had her with Sandy and Kat's dogs. That was just too many at once for her. She had the biggest crush on the neighbors' golden retriever, walked the fence for days after they moved.
Ruben is pretty nervouse around other dogs. He just likes people.
But there was that time...when RacZor chased after Trenyce. Trenyce was so scared she jumped AT/ONTO Sandy as if to say, "Your kid is scaring me, now you've got me." Ruben saw that little brat :devil1:  go after his sister, and he pounced and took Zor "down."  Zor was belly up on the grass. Didn't know Ruben had it in him.

Recently we visited my daughter where there were 6 dogs. 3 of hers and 3 belonging to her BIL.
I was surprised to find that my two little dogs ruled the whole group. Usually so timid and fearful....they charged and chased the resident lab across the yard, into the house and he wanted in his crate, away from these barking beasts....lol
The one I was concerned about was the pit/boxer mix, and they chased her....she'd come back, prancing, wanting to play....they'd chase her away again....and this continued the whole time. On the other hand they blended with the heeler, border collie and shitzu mix like old friends.
Last night in another OB class they were attending for the 1st time, they did not bark at the big dogs. Stella was even playing kissy face with a beautiful 2 yr old dobie.
Our agility trainer is in this class with her maltese pup and she was amazed that my dogs were not barking like fools at the big dogs, given their behavior in agility class. Another dobie owner that set up next to us at the last trial was amazed too....lol
I guess it varies....but we are working on them and seeing progress. They are getting much better.

I agree. I'm responsible with my dogs and they are always on leash on walks, which is required by law. But some dogs being walked by their owner are off leash. One time when walking my three dogs, all on leash, we encounter a dog off leash that charged my dogs. It didn't make contact as I intervened and prevented that. The owner of the dog laughed that his 80 pound dog thought it was sport to charge and annoy my three who do not add up to 30 pounds. Wrong reaction, ****** me off, I informed him that we were going around this path again and if I saw his dog off leash I would kill it. That shocked him, he didn't think that was so funny. I have never seen this person or his dog in this area to this day, and we walk it at least once a week. I would never kill anyones dog but sometimes you have to put up a good bluff to make your point. Oh, yeah, those that walk their dogs with the leash dragging and proclaim that their dog is on leash. I cut the leash off with my pocket knife and hand it to the owner. "This was hindering your dog, I came to the rescue."

Willow does not love everybody. :( At least not everybody all at once. I have found that large groups of dogs intimidate her. We attended several "Small Dog Social Hours" at a PetsMart that is about 30 miles from home. We went as often as possible over several months time. She did get a bit better. But instead of playing and socializing she gave herself a job! She became the Gate Greeter. She would park herself in front of the gate and politely greet every human and dog that came into the ring! It was very cute. But I had hoped she would learn to enjoy herself more. The PetsMart no longer offers the Social Hour.
We also attended Lori & Mark's wonderful New Years Day Dachsie Party! I had the bestest time EVER! Willow....not so much. :D
She does well meeting new dogs one-on-one. She likes big dogs a bit more than small dogs. (Bassetts seem to be her fav) But those big groups are just a bit too much, I guess.

• Solo is happy around all dogs, but sometimes she'll avoid the very big ones as she's a bit timid (she'll do a big detour as she walks past them! :D)
• Bacca just wants to play with every single dog, and will get testy with the ones that don't want to! He sometimes has issues with very big dogs that he feels threatened by (barks at them) - we just try and distract him with a toy before the big dog gets irritated! :fierce:
• Chewy never met a dog he didn't like! He always went in submissive (even with the tiniest dog!) - bowing down, tail wagging, bottom in the air!

My two are both resonably good with other dogs once they've "warmed" up to them. Takes the Professor longer than Snooter. They prefer smaller dogs. At the dog park, when a dachsie comes up to us they are fine. It's any other breed, small or large that they need the "warm up" period. I can just her Snooter saying "I'm a dachsie - I don't associate with poodles. Be gone, mutt!"

Oscar is terrible with other dogs!! :( He seems to like them but just keeps jumping up in their face. He will strain at the leash until he is completely upright and standing on his hind legs to do it.
We meet other dogs on our walks who are friendly dogs and their owners try to be patient for Oscar to try to help him to be friendly...but nothing has worked so far. Even growling from the other dog does not stop him and he just won't give up!! Size means nothing to Oscar!! He's not afraid of any dog.
He doesn't hurt them or bite them or growl - just keeps jumping up right in their face.
His new brother Topo is coming in another week or so and it will be interesting to see how they will get along. I think Oscar is lonely and wants to play - but just doesn't know how to do it. Topo is socialized with his litter brother and the rescue that lives with him.
I have him enrolled in obedience class - not started yet - but have a feeling they will throw us out because he is so stubborn..Otherwise - he minds really well and housebroke with very little problem. He's gentle taking treats, etc and shows no aggression that I have seen - unless that jumping at other dogs is aggression.
Has anyone else had a problem like this? Any advice would be much appreciated. That is really the only complaint I have with this little guy. :) Otherwise - he's a real sweetheart.

My girls are much more selective about the dogs they will socialize with ever since that incident with my neighbor and her off-leash boxer. You could even call them skittish, which makes me  because all it took was one irresponsible person's actions (choosing not to put her dog on a leash) and it forever changed Bailey and Peanut. It makes me sick every time I think about it.

Mine will stay close to me when they go to the vet and not try to have a confrontation with any other animal in the clinic. If any dogs or cats come close to their fence at home they go into the protective mode, they are little but they are mighty and will go to whatever lengths it takes to protect their hoomom and their boundries on their side of the fence. I know my babies are not socilitzed with other dogs or cats and they are probably a little old to try something new, but they are my babies and I won't have them to much longer so I am going to indulge in whatever they want to do and whatever I want to do for them they are my little :angel1: :angel1: :angel1:

Spice definitely does not play nice with others. That's mostly my fault because I didn't introduce him to other dogs. I didn't need to because he and Candy were always together. Those 2 did everything together.

I've read somewhere that dogs really don't have a true "size concept". I think this is completely wrong. Nook seems to pretty much hate large dogs and like small ones near her own size. It seems from the posts that other dachsie owners have the same experience. I almost get the idea that she somehow perceives larger dogs as a threat to her hoomans.

Skyler used to be good with other small dogs. He got attacked several times by a neighbor doxie a few years ago. Lousy good for nothing owners would just open up thier door and let the stupid dog out, didn't matter if we were outside or not. So now he's incredibly shy and leery of other dogs. The ONLY reason we decided to get a puppy is because he finally started showing interest in SMALLER dogs. If it's smaller than he is, he's not afraid. He's curious.

Mine are so unsocialized, since we're in such a rural area, that they don't like any other dogs. Jack did fine at obedience training, after the first week or two of barking himself hoarse at the others - (and of course, the bigger the better). But they really don't like any dogs, unless they're in someone else's fence - then they act like they want to play, but they bark a lot, especially Jack. And that's my fault. I plan to work on that.

GingerSnap likes calm dogs, regardless of size, but she hates bouncy ones. (other than the ones she lives with)
It's a little odd seeing this puppy disliking other puppies, but happily walking up to older, bigger dogs. If the other pup is tired and not acting crazy, she'll sniff and wag her tail, but the minute there is any bouncing, she hides or wants picked up, then she just shakes and shakes.
Though, this past week, at obedience class, she was much more interested in the other pups than she used to be.
On our walks, we tend to be approached by wandering neighborhood dogs. If they yap and bark at her, she tries to run away from them. I have a neighbor with a chow mix, a pit bull, and a chihuahua, and the only one she's afraid of is the chi because she growls and barks and chases anything that moves. Emma the pit just tries to lick everyone to death and the chow stays away from people as he's not supposed to be out but he opened the gate and figures he's in trouble.
Dogs are almost as weird as humans.

Valentin is afraid of people, but ok with most dogs (probably a result of his puppy mill days). He especially loves goldens as I had a golden when I got him. Valentin was great with my golden fosters too. I was dog sitting for a friend (6 goldens and V). V was one of the pack; I thought he would get trampled going out the door under the feet of the herd, but he was fine; one of the boys :D.
Heidi is fine with other dachshunds (as long as they don't go near her toys). "One tough puppy" leads our meet up group (in her cart) chasing away the larger, non doxies who try to "infiltrate" our area. Great Dane, Golden Berneese Mountain Dog, she chases them all away. The bigger they are, the more she nips at their paws and barks at them.
My foster, Daisy, could not care less.
