I just took all three of my dogs to have their nails done. Bunny and Cooler did just fine. Juney yelled and wriggled like she was being killed. I am tired from these 3 trips. (I take them one at a time.)
Apparently, Juney's tired out, too, from her "horrifying" experience. She's sleeping in my arms right now.
I have to take Bunny more often because her back nails curl under.
I noticed, also, that the nails on Bunny and Cooler are way thicker than on Juney.
I'd like to hear about other dog's reactions to experiences with nail cutting.

Well, when I clip toenails, Gretl screams bloody murder, because she knows I'll cave. Siglen squirms, but lets me. Brekke's is a 2 day process - I can do the back ones, and then she gets so wiggly, I can't continue! Sorcha has not been clipped by me, yet. At the groomers, they all do fine - sometimes, I just take them in and hold one at a time while they clip the girls' toenails. I pulled a real sneaky last week - Siglen and Sorcha had their teeth cleaned, and my vet always does toenail clips while they're out, if it is needed! (Sorcha has not had a chance to hold a grudge yet, since others have done her since she came to us!) Julia B.

Nail clipping is fun time! It takes two of us to do it. My husband will hold each wriggler while I clip. Magic is so gentle she will just give me the hound look and try to pull her back feet away from me. So. I have to take a break between front and back feet. We stand her level and try to keep her from bending around. (due to a previous slipped disc we are careful) Misty accepts front nail clipping but the back feet she has to be held back feet hanging down so I can get to the feet. I cannot clip the back feet on a level, she will not accept me taking each foot to clip. She will pull away and squirm. There is no verbal protest from either during the process, just sad looks.
I take advantage of the option of nail clippiing if there is a visit to the vet. That saves me doing it since I hate to to do it myself. Generally I clip once a month, around heartworm pill time. I also just do the tips since I am afraid to hit the quick. Misty has thick black nails and I cannot see the quick. Magic has thinner nails, brown in color but still hard to see. Guess Im lucky my girls are not yellers! Id need ear plugs!

I let the vet do it as I'm too much of a coward. López is sort of resigned but yelps and tries to wriggle away if he can.

OK the truth be know, I have a German background myself. Sooo,
they don't have a chance in hatties so to speak. When I make up my mind that they are going to have it done. Well, it does take me awhile to get at it though. They all tolerate it but if they can they go and hide. But then I have the cats and guiene pigs too.:blue: Ivy holds a grudge!
The routine ear cleaning can be a challenge too! Speaking of that I had them in the Crystel River yesterday. I better clean them out and put some junk in to make sure they stay gunk free!:sarcastic

Great stories. Thanks for letting me know that I'm not the only mommy that makes their babies go through "harrowing" experiences.
Does anyone use a dremmel? What is your experience with it? Did you get the one from a pet supply store or from Home Depot? I heard one person uses it on their dog's nails and he just goes to sleep. :snooze:

Sadie Mae believes in "preventative screaming." i.e. she sees the nail clippers and she starts screaming. We bought a soft muzzle for her when we moved to help quieten the screams. We didn't want the neighbors to think we were killing her.
Skooter is an angel when it comes to clipping her nails. She lays on her back and sticks one foot up at a time to get them done. Of course she does this for her BOY, not her Mom. She will let me do them but she's not as happy as she is when HE does it.
Butchie Boo is the sneaky one - he does his own. He literally chews his nails down to the right length. For a long time I thought they just grew slow... I never said I was the smart one in the house...just the Mom.

trimming time... we use a dremmel on them. But Kamper freaks out when we do his back paws so we use the nail clippers.
On Natasha we use the nail clipper also since I dont want to frighten her with a dremmel.
We got ours at Home depot.
Your pets will either like it or not. I think the noise and vibration is what gets to them.

say that they have a 2-speed and use the lower speed to get their dachsies used to it. They seem to use it regularly at the faster speed once the dogs are used to the sound and the grinding. In fact, 2 or 3 say that their dachsies drift off to sleep with the vibration! Julia B.
Since I don't have the strength in my hands anymore, I get the techs at the vet to do it. As for the dremmel, it makes way too much noise and freaks them out. Mine must be an old model only has one speed. JMO Good Luck with whatever you decide.
