at what age do dachsunds stop growing? How do you know when they have reached their full adult size?

but from all I have read, a dachsie is considered full-grown at 1 year. Many have finished growing at 8 to 9 months, but 1 year is usually the time. Hopefully Cindi, Carol, or Jen will see this and let you know if I'm off track. Julia B.

Both sizes are usually the size they will be at least height by a year and weight can be also but I never say they are all done growing till they are 2 1/2 taht is when they are really done after they spring their ribs and everything all settles into place.

I do not if I heard correctly, but I was told one year for height and general weight..two years for full maturity, especially long hairs...the coat is not fully grown out till around the age of two.

While they may still be growing, is there a good age that it is "safe" (or relatively safe) to get them sweaters, etc that they won't outgrow? My boys are 4 months, and I don't want to wait until they're completely grown to get them some clothes. I know it's summertime now, but I would like to at least get them used to a raincoat now. The last dachsie I had would sit and refuse to move once we put a sweater on him. But, we didn't try until 3 years. I want to work on my boys young so they'll accept them.

When Missy was little I started out using some of my old socks and as she grew I used bigger mens sport socks for inside the house, cut holes for front legs and cut the toe out for their head and cut the leg part off. It gets them used to the feeling of wearing something early without the major investment (and hey you get them in pairs which will work for your boys). Now she wears anything I put on her like it's nothing. Also baby size sweat pant legs work really well.
Here is one of Missy as a baby with one of my sock creations:D

The sock idea is great. I would say by a 11-12 months you would be safe for permanent clothing :) especially if they have been neutered/spayed. Sometimes the hormones of unneutered animals, especially if a bitch has not had a season, will allow for more growth after that age.

I'm not sure this will work for my boys, they may already be too big. At 3 1/2 and 4 months, they're 7.8 and 8.5 lbs. Extra large socks may work, but seems to me that it might be too tight. Maybe I'll try small sweatpants. It is getting very warm here (in the 90's), so they probably won't take too kindly to whatever I do. We'll see.........

That is a great idea for super little ones. I used boys underware for when my stand. poodle would come in heat. The fly worked great for the tail. :o
The picture is so cute. Mizzy is so tiny anyway, I dont know how you would find anything to fit her. My Hobo was about 8 lbs. and to this day I won't give my close friend his coats etc. She wanted them for her shitzueieeiieieeie. I can't part with them. Even if I never get another doxie that small. I am selfish what can I say.:sarcastic

Hermione is my first dachshund. She's a long haired mini (? we shall see, won't we?)...will she need some sweaters/socks for this winter? I live in Maryland so we have moderate winters. Avg temps in the 35-45 degree range. Last year we had a blizzard and several smaller snow storms...the 3 years prior we hardly had ANY accumulating snow at all.

wear sweaters and I even started when she was young! Oh she'll tolerate one fleece sweater that I make her wear when it has snowed but until she is outside she's pulling and tugging on it to get it off. I only make her wear it because if she doesn't then she comes in looking remarkably like a snowball!
Here I wanted a delicate little pup BUT NO I got Mitzi instead and I woundn't trade her for the world! :D
