Once again, I found myself at Norfolk Animal Control (volunteering) and there was another doxie there. This was a dapple black and tan and supposedly 2 years old. I have NEVER seen a dog this TINY. Its body wasn't underfed or anything but this thing couldn'tve weighed 2 lbs. She's the size of a ferret. She was brought in after being caught in a humane trap meant for a raccoon. Someone said she was a "teacup" doxie. What the heck is that? I thought it was 3 sizes: mini, tweenie, standard. Of course she has a "first choice" name on her and will get a good home but I was wondering if any of you have seen such a tiny FULL GROWN doxie.

There are any number of breeders out there who intentionally breed down to get their dogs smaller and smaller (teacups) because there is a demand for them from ignorant buyers. And, surprise, surprise, these ill-bred animals usually carry a hefty price tag.
To my knowledge there isn't a minimum weight mentioned in the breed standard for dachshunds, though there are only two recognized sizes -- standard (16 pounds and higher) and mini (11 pounds and under).
There are two such breeders in my county alone (Broward County, Florida), though not for teacup dachshunds. They do yorkies and others. One even admits that such breedings can be risky because of the inherent health problems. But they do it anyway. I believe the last I looked, they were selling teacup yorkies for $1500. :cussing:

Breeding for weight is not the best reason to improve the breed. I have heard of smaller dachsies before, but there is certainly no prize for the size, and there is no such thing as a teacup dachsie. As Mack says, there are standards and miniatures. We who have the ones who weigh between 11 and 16 pounds, use the word "tweenies" to describe the ones here, but it is not an offically recognized size. Julia B.

This is an ad I found in the Phoenix, AZ newspaper. I'm writing it exactly the way they wrote the add down to the bold, uppercase print:

DACHSHUND - HE'S AWESOME, TINIEST MINIATURE I'VE SOLD, 2 LBS, 9 wks, red S/H, $1000.

All I could think of was the poor dog's future health

I'm with you, think of the potential health problems. I wonder if this person acquired her dogs from the puppymill site that only deals with teacup size of a number of breeds. Check it out.

Otto's Mom, has the doxie you mentionted been adopted????? If not keep me in mind. Thanks.

I had stumbled on this site along time ago. It is scarier than I remembered! They actually call the dogs "Freak" and "Little freak" very disturbing. All I hope is that the uneducated that buy these puppies love them and care for them. The poor little ones.

I have seen some sites of little dinkie dogs that cause quite a stir. One I think is called Pinnocio or something like that. Things like that just make these "freaks" more popular.

Oh, I can't wait to get on of those puppies! Give me a break, what are people thinking? I wish we could find a way to stop these rediculous breeding pratices. The purpose of breeding is to make the breed better. Not make "freaks" What is the purpose. Where I live they would be the perfect size form hawk food! I'm starting to get carried away.

This little girl is on the 5 day stray hold and the person who brought her in said they'd take her. You put your name on the waiting list and if the owner doesn't come in to claim it in the 5 days, they take it to the vet to be spayed and you pick it up from there. She sure was a cute little thing, just so tiny! I haven't gotten to visit since Monday. She had a collar on but NO TAGS! I just don't get people. This is an obviously expensive pet and they just let her roam without identification.

Rena: If you get that coonhound doxie for me, I'll steal that little ferret/doxie for Patt :D

because 2 pounds at 9 weeks may not end up so tiny! Brekke weighed 1.7 pounds when I got her at 9 weeks, and at a year she weighed 10.5 pounds. We are almost at her 2nd birthday, and she weighs 10.8 pounds. (Of course, a lot of my friends claim 1/2 of that is hair - she's a longhair!) :D Not to mention, she was $400. Julia B.

Having second thoughts about the coonhound/dachshund are we? Never say that you want to see a particular type of dog around me in any of the forums here. I have someone in the Dallas area that could go get that dog for you. Hope???? Would Rooby and the tailpipes mind picking up a coonhound/dachshund at Oak Cliff Shelter??? On second thought, we'd better get the transport workout first!

I wonder how long I'd last at my townhouse with 5 dogs. There's a 4 dog limit in Norfolk and I'm certain I'm well past the limit of dogs allowed in my townhouse....still I wonder if I could "foster" her. I wonder what Dolly'd do if she saw another doxie like her. She goes nuts when she sees a black small dog. I want her, she's a MEGA DOXIE!!!!

Just let me know when you are really ready. She is still at the Oak Cliff Shelter according to Petfinder. The biggest problem will be figuring out transport this time of year. Of course with the investigation into missing basketball player whose vehicle was found in Va, you never know.

If she turned up "mysteriously" at my front door, I couldn't turn her away:D That truck was found less than 10 miles from where I live.

Waco Police are having a news conference this afternoon at 4 PM. Am not sure what it will be, but everyone here is praying for miracles (especially the basketball coach). Rumors are that 2 team members might have been responsible for his death. Hope not, but you never know. I honestly don't know of an easy way to get the puppy to you right now.

That's OK, I don't think I could handle double the Dolly at one time anyway. I'd use the old "I'm getting her for by boyfriend" excuse to justify getting her and then end up with another dog.

I heard the story behind the guy's disappearance. Don't sound too good for him. What is it with the colleges around here? There was a guy who kidnapped 2 nuns after he'd killed his dad in GA and murdered one nun up here. He was caught here, he'd gone to college here too.

Looks like a former team member and roommate from Maryland. His cousin in Delaware is the one who leaked information to the police. Another news conference at 10. This is the second Baylor student involved in a murder this year. College, hormones, stress, I don't know. Rena

Rena & Andrea - I just stumbled across this mention of the coonhound/dachshund in Dallas... wasn't sure if ya'll were joking or you really need me to pick her up... I'll help if you need me to. :)

I wish we weren't kidding. I would be serious about keeping her if she "mysteriously" showed up on my doorstep somehow. If I had to "mysteriously" fly somewhere to pick her up and then say she was dropped off by some kindhearted stranger with a little tag attatched to her collar saying they knew I was a doxie coonhound lover. Is she still at the shelter? If I had 2 dogs that looked alike, they still = one dog don't they? I could seriously rationalize that. I could trick my boyfriend by telling him that she was Dolly.

Hey, you could have Nostrildamos stare deep into your boyfriend's eyes and "hypmotize" him! Rena, is this dog still there? I wasn't able to find him when I searched petfinders...

Disappeared from the site the middle of last week when the Oak Cliff shelter updated their site. Hopefully, it was adopted. Rena

Andrea!

Star the coondox (http://www.petfinder.com/pet.cgi?action=2&pet=1884529&adTarget=468dogsmall&SessionID=3f161cbe399ea3b9-app3&display=&preview=0&row=0)

This shelter is about 25 miles from me. :)

My sister lives up that way too! Oh what I'd give to be able to get another Dolly. The face isn 't quite right though, Star's snout is too long. My Dolly clone must have an overbite and extensive floppy lips. Dolly has the littlest bit of white on her breastbone compared to Star's. Still....very tempting though. I must be realistic and responsible and stick with my legal limit of 4. *sigh* Feel free to keep looking on my behalf. Perhaps on a day I'm feeling less responsible.
