I have 2 questions.

1. F & O's bellies are going from pinky brown to blackish. Is this normal? They are 1.5 years old.

2. Oscar was sleeping belly-up in the sun the other day and I started worrying about sunburn. Is there a sunscreen for dogs? Can their bellies get burnt?

I can't be of much help on the color change, but I can tell you what we did for Mickey in the sun. We got a child's sensitive sunblock and put it on his ears. His ears get all red and bumpy when he's out in the sun. The sunblock seems to help with the redness and bumps. But I've never had any official vet opinion on the sunblock issue.

I'm trying to find a big ole' wide brim hat for the little guy, but haven't had any luck yet.

I'd love to hear what others have to say on this one.

Sue, Peaches's belly turned from pink to black too--she's a black-and-tan, so it seemed kind of a natural thing. Farfel retains his flesh-toned belly.

I know that dogs can get sunburned--because those Chinese cresteds, which have hair only on the tops of their heads, tips of their tails, and around their feet, have to wear sunblock if they're outside for long. But I don't know whether the occasional stretch in the sun would really cause sunburn. Dogs have thicker skin than we do. On the other hand, it wouldn't hurt, so if you're worried... I would just make sure the product you use has no ingredients that could hurt the pups if they were to lick it off.

Bailey has a darker belly then Ginger , not sure what his was like when he was younger because we got him after he was a year old.

Bailey's belly is a browish color, he is red sable , my Gingers belly is pink, and she is a clear/blondish red. when I had my Abby her belly was a little darker and she was a black and tan. When she got sick it turned more white, along with her gums and tounge due to her low red blood cell count http://dachsie.org/ubb/frown.gif

My puppers love the sun too, I will have to try the sensitive sunblock http://dachsie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Josie has a dark belly. She is a black/tan. Punkin's belly did get darker too as she got older. Dr. Matthews used to say her belly was as smooth as a babies bottom, but as she got older she got more hair too.

It seems like I saw sunscreen for dogs in Fosters & Smith (I forget the name of the catalog) and RC Steele catalog. Look there.

Nothings citer than a dachshund belly! If it gets sunburned, he won't be able to enjoy his belly rubs!

I don't recall ever seeing a sunburned dog except for long-haired dogs (usually white) that had been given a really close clip job.

Most dogs are smart enough to just bask in the sun; only humans are dumb enough to COOK.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one that was confused about a darkening belly! Poor Penny first started darkening in what I would call her "arm pits" and just inside her back legs. I scrubbed and scrubbed the poor little babe! Her darkening skin looked like the grubby necks I see on kids sometimes and I felt quite guilty about never bathing her! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smile.gif
Luckily for Penny, our friend Jane set me straight before I scrubbed the skin right off of her! http://dachsie.org/ubb/blushie.gif
