I took Bailey for a complete check up tp the vet today. He was positive for ear mites, so she gave him a good cleaning and drops for me to put into his ears, and his sissy Ginger.

As for his little 20-30 second cry spells, he did it again this morning, It seems to happen once a week. I took notice of the signs while he was crying, He was walking fine on his feey, but would not let me pick him up, thenright after the crying he continually was dragging his but on the floor. When I told the vet she said "anal glands". So Bailey got cleaned out down there, was not a pretty sight. SHe said to keep an eye, She was sure it was not his back because of the signs. She said it would be more cronic, more often, and the spells would probably be longer. She said it was most likely the presure from the anal glands. She wants to see him back in 3 weeks for a folow up on the ear mites and anal glands.

Other then that she said he is a beautiful, healthy looking dog. Great skin, and teeth and he was such a good boy not one growl, even during the nail clipping , and the lyme disease shot(my ginger is so figety when it comes to the vet). I know I am bragging http://dachsie.org/ubb/bounce.gif

Just wanted to let everyone know the update on Bailey http://dachsie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Excellent news especially it not being the back. I was torn between the mites and the ear infection as mine have had both during periods in their lives and the signs are confusing sometimes.

I'm very glad to hear Bailey is OK. Owen's got icky ears now. One is full of a reddish-brown fluid, and it just started on Sunday. Needless to say, I'm getting ahold of the vet to get him taken care of. So much for spending money this month http://dachsie.org/ubb/kfrown.gif Oh well, that's the life of a dachsie mom.

Owen does the bootie scootie too! I take him to the groomer about every 6 weeks and have that part taken care of too. http://dachsie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif along with a shampoo and pedicure all for the low low price of $15.

Hi. I just emailed you but wanted to post again how glad I am to know Bailey is ok. Not to scare you or anything, but when Punkin was crying, it did not last long and it didn't happen very often...but it was the beginning of the calcifications in her back...so just be careful and watch him. If he does it again soon (since you just had his glands expressed) take him back and ask for an x-ray. Good luck Bailey buddy!

Let's compare vet bills. I took Pluto for what I call his "Spring Cleaning." Heartworm blood test & medication, flea medication, lyme vaccine & a quick lookover - $225 later. It's amazing to me how expensive a spring visit has become.

Wow. Both boys got all that, minus the lyme shot, for $225 Canadian. Maybe you should try cross-border vetting.

Frankie and Oscar send a get well to all those with ear infections. I heard somewhere that it is good to let their ears fold back because air gets in and keeps the inner ear from getting too moist. It also looks too cute.

Owen had a "borderline" ear infection. Same thing they told me last time. I clean 'em and put the aloecetic solution in them the way the 1st vet said, but it looks like it's going to have to be a weekly, bi-weekly thing. I went to the Holistic Vet this time, he prefers a more natural Aloe/mineral oil solution rather than the one with alchol in it that I was using before.

He'll be good as new in no time http://dachsie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hey Linda. We heard too that keeping the ears back to let air circulate helps. It does look cute. We always say Punkin and Josie had their hair up. Cute!

Gee Amy! 225.00!! Where in the world do you live. For yearly shots, heartworm check and all, It costs us a little over 100 bucks. That doesn't include the Frontline though. I guess GA (at least south) isn't so bad...except for no emergency room!

Just out of vulgar curiosity, did you get a breakdown on the charges for Pluto's "spring cleaning"? I don't see how that could add up to $225. Heck, for that, you could buy a whole new dog & start fresh!

Hi Penny's Aunt, I did get a breakdown, but it's at home. I'll post it tomorrow.

By the way Tanya, Pluto & I live in Brooklyn, NY and my $225 is for 1 dog - that doesn't include his yearly vaccines in the fall.

Oops! I meant Pluto'slanie instead of Amy. Forgive me as I'm still trying to learn everyone! http://dachsie.org/ubb/blushie.gif That 225.00 does not include his yearly shots! http://dachsie.org/ubb/eek.gif Wow! We take 1 dog at a time and get the whole shabang for a little over $100.00. Anal gland express is only $5.00. I couldn't afford my 4 babies if I lived up in NY! Sorry about the name confusion! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smile.gif

WOW, I thaght $100 was bad, and the $35.00 of that bill is the frontline. Plus I need to go back for follow up in three weeks, and the second part of the lyme shot, have to buy more heartgard for both puppers. That will be $50 vet check up easy http://dachsie.org/ubb/eek3.gif Then Ginger is due for her yearly in August. I can not imagine having 2 and living in NY.

What we won't do for our babies http://dachsie.org/ubb/smile.gif

So glad to hear that Bailey is OK! Those anal glands will get you every time! http://dachsie.org/ubb/frown.gif

Lanie, my bills are right up there with yours. I guess the rule with vets, as with everything else, is that the charges will be whatever the market will bear... http://dachsie.org/ubb/crying.gif And I have TWO!! http://dachsie.org/ubb/crying.gif http://dachsie.org/ubb/crying.gif

One small money-saving tip: Instead of buying heartworm and flea meds from your vet, have her/him write a prescription and send the scrip to Drs. Foster and Smoth (or whatever catalogue you use). The meds are substantially cheaper!

Just back from the vet for Silly and Sadie's "spring cleaning" and I think it was pretty reasonable. For two of them all shots (rabies, city license, distemper, parvo, bordatella, check-up, year supply of heartgard, heartworm test, and eyedrops for Silly)That is about 100 bucks for each one. I am glad I changed vets too. I get in esily, get to choose which vet I want and the prices are much better than the old one. Plus they ooh and ahh my babies which makes my day!

Why do you need to get both Sentinel & Frontline? Is one for heartworm & one for fleas? Isn't there one that does both?

Just curious. I don't live in a heartworm area, so I don't know what is used.

Also, for your Frontline (fleas, right?), always get the BIG DOG size & ask for a needle & syringe, & how much for your dog's weight (write it on the box right then). The big dog size & the small dog size are almost the same price, but the big dog size has lots more in it.

After all, if you save $30 in flea med, that's $30 you can spend for Macho Stix & new toys (& a can of Cheez Whiz to squirt into the Kong).

I wondered about that too.

I give les garcons Sentinel for both fleas and heartworm.

This is what I have paid for stuff -not all at once:
Fecal lab test: $8
shot in puppy series $27
puppy series shot and rabies $38
6mos Heartguard plus $14
Skin Scraping lab test $6
Office visit for a limp $15
Neutering $80
Two teeth pulled (at same time of neutering) $10
Anal Glands expressed $9
First office visit $26
Antibiotics $7.50

Wow! In total I have spent 256.50 at the vet since November when we got Rudy!

If you want to use frontline for fleas try using heartguard plus for preventing heartworms and other worms -it is a lot cheaper!
