I bought a couple things for my latest trip up to Missouri from Florida, and both Daisy and I really liked them. My car has bucket seats, but I have such a high console in the middle, that having a crate for her didn't really work out well. I needed her to be able to cross over my lap and out the driver's door to help me out. So I had the crate in the back seat with a door that opened to the front. But I would get a muscle cramp reaching back to open it. This year, I bought the Kurgo car seat that fits over the bucket seat. I added a little extra padding around the edges. Daisy is a VERY LONG doxie, and she had plenty of room in there. It will hold up to a 35 pound dog. She was very comfy riding and sleeping in it. Getting in and out was no problem, and it has a safety strap to hook to her harness.
The other thing I bought, and absolutely love is the canteen they put out. It is different from the ones carried in Petsmart. The cap on the canteen has a plug in it that you pull out, and can pour the water into the attached dish, and then put the plug back in. If the dog doesn't drink all the water, you just remove the plug and hold the dish against the cap and the water flows back into the canteen. The dish is removable, and there is a build in dish, do you have both food and water dish. THere is a good carrying strap on it. This is so much handier than carrying food and water dishes, bottles of water, etc. The cap openning is big enough to put ice cubes in the canteen, too. And it is the same price as the ones in the store. I got mine off of ebay. Love it.
We did take one of the collapsable crates, just stuck it in the trunk, so she would have it in the room when we got there. But the car seat made the trip so much easier. And we can take the canteen with us when we go for walks with all the girls.
