Coughing Dachshund

I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on this. My 7 month old dachshund consistantly coughs after taking a drink of water. It's almost like when we humans take a swallow of something and it goes down the wrong pipe....well that's what he is doing. It only lasts a few seconds....but it does happen each and every time he takes a drink. He doesn't have this problem eating his food....he only coughs when drinking water, and has done this since he was 8 weeks old.

Can anyone give me some information on this please.

Ye[, you got it right. My folks had one little girl who never did learn how to drink w/o getting some up her nose. I've hear some people theorize that this happens if a pup was weaned too young but I don't know if there is any truth to that. Ask you vet the next time you are in but I don't think it's any thing you need to worry about.

Don't know the reason either, but both Arnold and Farfel cough after they drink--and they do it every time. No ill effects.

I think it must have something to do with the nose too. Peaches drinks by placing her nose on the edge of the bowl, then lapping up the bowl side. She NEVER coughs! (She's such a dainty thing! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif )

My Freddie does the same thing, and has most of his life (he's 2 1/2 yrs. old). His Vet checked his throat but didn't see anything unusual. I feel that MAYBE their trachea (sp?) may be kinda deformed - too small or something. I no longer am concerned about it, as it is exactly what you described; it ONLY happens when drinking (gulping) water and lasts a few seconds. Nothing serious.

My first doxie, Willamena Rose did the same thing, drink, cough, water up the nose and down the pipe. She was a mini. Aug does not do this, wonder if standard have this oddity?
