If you would all indulge me with a little more information...

I've been reading about Dachshunds and health issues, and one thing I've seen in a few places is having to "express the anal glands" of their dogs. Gaa.... That sounds just NASTY. So I was wondering, how many people have had to do this, and if you've had to, how often you have to do it?

Rudy needs them done about every three months or so. He starts to have a funny dead-mackeral-like smell near his anus, and he often scoots his bootie on the ground. I used to take him to the vet -$9 per pop, but I had the breeder show me how and now I can do it myself (wearing latex gloves with a wad of kleenex in my hand).

I get my boys' anal glands expressed about every 3-4 months. The techs have offered to show me how, but I would just rather let them do it for the $21 (for both)<IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm43.gif" border=0>. I get them done when Finn starts getting that nasty smell to his booty - that usually indicates that both of them need to go in. It really isn't that bad... Just another joy of being owned by dachsies!

I've smelled that "smell" on the bigger, outside dogs, but not on Wotan except the time of the Great Coyote Battle. He needed a bootie bath (and so did my hand and arm) after that scare.

I've never had to "expell" his poor little butt- and he and I are very greatful for that.<IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm13.gif" border=0>

As for the big girls- they scootch around and then they seem to do great after a while. I just keep an eye on things so there is no infection...
