Well, I told you guys about Josie's breath and how if she licked you it was like a stinky perfume you had to wash off with Clorox! I told you how the vet never seemed concerned though I asked about it many times.

Well, she had them cleaned today and they had to pull 6 teeth!! SIX TEETH!! We could've saved some maybe had he/she (husband &wife team) cleaned them when I first bought this to his attention. We put her on antibiotics before we cleaned them, and do you know that her breath was smelling like roses after a few days on the meds. This dog must have had this infection for a couple of years because her breath smeeled like this when we got her from the family who abandoned her.

I was dumb, I admit. I never knew anything about dentals for dogs until I joined rescue and started reading this board. I expected my vet to tell me these things. But, I know now. Josie will feel so much better. What a pair I'm gonna have. My two toothless dachshies...Ben and Josie.

Tanya don't be too hard on yourself if even the VET didn't know. Like a good mommy, you knew best all along. I can just picture your two little toothless treasures!!

The vet REALLY dropped the ball on Josie!

Well, at least now you know what to look for...

I agree Penny's Aunt. I feel like it's my fault though for not insisting. She lost 7 teeth actually but went straight for the food bowl when we got home! Didn't affect her appetite! She will take antibiotics for a week just to be sure. It cost me $119 for all that. Is that the usual charge?? 30 for bllod work, 45 for cleaning. 5 dollars for each pulled tooth, and then cost of the meds.

Josie isn't really toothless. As far as I know these 7 are all that's missing. Ben on the other hand gums the world!

Tanya,

Please don't blame yourself for not knowing better. Yes, times have changed in regards to canine oral health AND education. I remember about 25 years ago, with our dachsie Fritzi, we NEVER thought about his teeth. In his last years his breath was horrible, and I remember he had a few missing teeth, which was from pure neglect. We did not know this at the time. He also ate CANNED Alpo (which we thought was THE best! <IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm43.gif" border=0>). Looking back, I only wish we knew what we NOW know. His heart problems could have been related to his bad teeth. We just live and learn, that's all.
I'm glad Josie's breath is much better, and I'm sure she FEELS better!http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif
