Hi, Our puppies will get to come home the first weekend in August. I've read up and watched a video on this product. Since our little ones will be crated at night, and in an indoor pen in the unfinished basement for the workday, I've bought this relatively new product. Ironically, they use a dachshund in the video, so it must be possible to train with this. We plan to train them to go outside when they are upstairs, the bell on the door, but after reading everyone's housebreaking posts, I'm thinking for the first several weeks, I might just have an extra litter pan upstairs. We really don't have a good place for it, but I haven't had an animal in the house in 10 years, so I don't want ANY "accidents." We plan to keep them in the tiled kitchen for a time anyway-when we are home and they are upstairs with us. Has anyone ever used this?

and from most of what others experience is with their dachshund, it hasn't been too successful. Most stories I've read, the puppers like to play with the litter, etc. Dachshunds, always into trouble:D The most successful housebreaking skills with our guys is crate training. Dachshunds as you may know are STUBBORN, STUBBORN, STUBBORN! Maybe someone who has had luck will be able to help you better.
Good luck with your new little one. Do you have any pictures? We'd love to see!
BTW...Welcome to DBB!:bounce:

The only person I know who has used the litter with a dachshund was not successful. The puppy thought it was a great place to dig! She put the dog and litter in the bathroom and came back to a bathroom covered in litter and potty on the floor! Good luck and feel free to ask any questions you need to.

I'm still housebreaking and it's going very well. The old fashioned way - outside. My Mini is now 10 weeks old. NEVER EVER an accident in his kennel. Of course, there has always been someone home with him during the day. He can finally hold it over night (but just started 2 days ago).
We take Charlie out after each meal and periodically during the day. He has the odd accident on our hardwood floor but really it's about a whole tablespoon of urine so really it's not a big deal. Once in a while he'll surprise us with a 'log'.....just a 'lil tissue and throw it down the toilet.
I personally, wouldn't recommend litter box training unless that is how you want it to ALWAYS be. I think it was meant for people who live in Apartments or are wheel-chair bound.
I hope that helps!!

Hi,
Ruben & Trenyce came home Saturday and were using it on their own this morning! I think it helped that I put Trenyce in the pan, gave the "Go Potty" command, and gave her her very first teeny doggie bone treat with lots of praise (after she did the dirty work). Ruben wanted her treat, but I didn't cooperate. I swear at the next waking he walked in the pan and pooped!

He then got his first treat, and I could not be more thrilled. Later, they both went in the pan and peed, although Ruben also 'Tinkles" on the floor when he's excited, but then he's only 7 weeks old!
I have had to toss a big towel in their pen because the first thing they did was "bury" their squirrel, but I just take it out and put it under the towel. Ruben chewed the litter but I just stuck a chew in his mouth and removed him from the pan. :raz: Yuk! I was gone this weekend and my husband cleaned up a lot of mess on the concrete basement floor, (They have a big pen and a crate.) so he thinks I'm a miracle working "Doggie Mommy." I can live with that.
If this continues for a couple of days, and since the litter doesn't smell, we may take the box upstairs and let the puppies interact with us in the kitchen sometimes.:flush:

Hi. Thought I'd share my experience with litter box training my guys. When I first got Cassie I bought the litter box and Second Nature litter. I wanted to use this method because I live in a townhome and our living quarters are on the second level. I put the litter box on my patio and it has been wonderful. Cassie is now 10 months old and goes out to the litter box whenever she needs to go, and she goes without me bringing her. The only problem I am experiencing now is that she goes halfway into the box (thinking she's IN the box) and pees outside of the box. I'm trying to figure out how to remedy that. Now my other dog Jacob is another matter. He is 5 months old and would rather go outside than in the litter box. He will still use the box if I put him in it, but sometimes he just sits there and looks at me like "what am I suppose to do?". When I bring him outside, he pees every time. So now I am using 2 methods, because Cassie will not go outside!
Another thing. The Second Nature dog litter is very expensive. Yesterdays News is a litter for cats and is exactly the same thing, and a lot cheaper. You can find it in Petsmart or Petco.

I was thinking about trying the litter with my dog because I work all day. She is six years old and learns things pretty quick. I just wondered if anyone had trained their adult dog to use the litter. I would like to train her to use it when I'm not home so she can have more freedom in the house. Right now if I let her have free reign she pees or poops on the carpet. If I gate her off in one room she holds it all day. I would like her to be able to have more room to move around in while I'm gone and not have to come home and clean the carpet, especially since I rent! Please let me know if you know of any experiences on training older dogs to use the litter.:bounce:
