I have a 10 week old Mini and I took him to the Groomers last week for the first time. He's a Smooth so he doesn't really need to go ~ it's more like a treat! They shampoo, brush, cleaned the ears and clipped his nails. He smelled sooooo wonderful after and his fur was so shiny!!!
I think I'll treat him every month since they said he was so good. How about you? Smooth/Wire Haired/Long Hair??

Only Lucy, the wire, goes to the groomers. She hates for me to groom her, so she goes to her favorite hair stylist, David!

I used to take Molly to the groomers and she didn't like it. Zeke will be in need of a groomer at some point. The time Rena took him to be groomed to come here he was mad at her for a couple of weeks. When he goes I guess Mom will have to stay with him to make him feel better.

is groomed by Mom. He gets his nails trimmed, paws groomed and ears cleaned about once a month. I started out doing it (trying to do it) when we first got him at six months old. He was like a wild, wild doggie the first several attempts but as time went on he got better and now he loves it! He even jumps up on the sofa and lays down (only because he knows he's going to be getting some doggie treats:D ) I use to bathe him every two weeks, I just loved the way he smelled and the scent would last for a week or so but...I found out that every two weeks was to often, it made his skin and fur very dry. So now we go for the "a la natural scent" and it's probably been six weeks since his last bath. How often do other moms bathe their Longhairs? Any comments?

Frankie goes to the groomer every 6-8 weeks. I would do it myself, but I don't know how to cut her; she's a LH. I've bathed her myself; in my opinion, it's quality time together! I also do her ears on a regular basis, trim her nails and brush her teeth every day (which of course the groomer doesn't do). It's fun spending time with her!

Otto goes for an Oatmeal bath when his allergies are really bad (since the last oatmeal bath I tried to give him ended me up in hospital!). They both go for "pedicures" every 4-6 weeks.

is very little maintenance. We only bathe Chief once every few months. No muss.no fuss!

Even with two of my crew being LH (Frank and Tanner) the only thing that is sometimes hard to handle is nails:eek: I took Frank to Pet Smart once when I got to burned out fighting him over his feet. It cost about $14 took them over 15 minutes of table time and they did get at least one too short (I sometimes do that as well). I decided it wasn't worth it to take him there. He was at least as upset having them work on his feet as he gets when I try to work on them.
The boys are relativelly low maintance Combs average once a week on the LH boys. Nails (Ad foot hair trimming) once a month, baths every six months or so. Nothing that we can't handle ourselves. The nails generally take a couple of days . If I'm lucky I can do all fronts one day and all rears another. Tanner gets upset if I do all his at once and he doesn't get more lap time when I do Frank and Dester's rears.
I've learned how to kneel on the ground with Frank trapped between my legs to work on his front feet. I still have to get to the drawing board to make up that design for a dachsund squeeze shoot:eek: I can use while working on thwir feet. I'm sure there must be a market for such a device:)

I agree that the Joy to having a Smooth is your don't have to do any special grooming ~ it's a treat.
The Groomer I took Charlie to only charges $5 for just his nails and $10.50 for the shampoo bath and cleaning the ears. I figure for just under $16.00 that's pretty reasonable! :flower:

Wow, I was paying almost $40.00 for a shampoo, cut, blow dry and nails clipped. She also cleaned her ears. I found someone closer who is charging me under $30.00. I travel less and pay less.

I'd rather do it myself. Actually if I could afford it maybe I would. But sometimes the day after a bath I head for the public hunting grounds. Soooooo.....
But I used to groom on a partime basis, is hard to justify spending money on that. Plus, at one time I had 5 poodles, 2 standards and 3 mini's, plus a sheltie. But I also had a full time job.
The reason I went to dachsies besides my back and my carpell tunnel. Was it doesn't take anytime or effort to groom a doxie after all of those dogs with coats. Yes, one of the standards was in full show coat too. Yes, I took them camping and in the woods too.
Doxies are so easy to keep up. Why do I ever complain about grooming them? Darned if I know!:D :dizzy:

Remmy has a bald spot on his chest, don't know what it is from..Checked by the vet, no prob, he doesn't wear a collar because of it but he does get an oatmeal bath and conditioner..spend more on his shampoo than mine! :circle:
I hate doing his nails.. Black/tan... it is so hard NOT to get the quick. but he lets me do it.. what a little sweety:D He need another bath soon. I have to leave the shampoo on for 15 min...have you ever tried to hold a soapy mini for 15 min? not an easy task. :P

I have 3 LH and I don't find their coats to difficult to maintain. I brush then every couple of days, and comb them once a week. They aren't too bad letting me clip their nail, but they don't like having the feet hair trimmed. They all run (even Cooper) if I pick up the toothbrush!
The only thing I won't touch is Anal Glands! It is worth it for me to pay the vet to do that!

Max is a black & tan short hair with a beautiful shiny black coat. He get compliments wherever he goes on how shiny and beautiful he is.:dog:
I do however take him to the vet every 4 to 6 weeks for a nail trim. We both get very nervous when I try to do it. I just isn't worth the stress to me.:crying:

I take them to the groomer, but only for nail trims. I finally came to the conclusion that it's worth the extra money to not have to go through the dramatics of trimming them myself, especially with Peanut. As it is, it takes two groomers to hold her, and she weighs 7 pounds! :eekdevil:

Lucie is half smooth coat and half nicked  (no hair on the tummy at all) so there's no way I will let some body else have the little fun I have, grooming her which consist in a big HUGE 10 minutes, bathing and drying.
I once won a free grooming session. I did ask if it would be transferable to an other dog, Lucie's good pal Romy... thing they accepted but was it fair???

Sophie is a SH so she only gets grooming on special occaisions. She likes the extra attention she gets at the "day spa". I do most of it myself, though. Nice to have a wash-n-wear dog!
She and I get our nails done together. My human manicureist loves doggies, so I take her with me to my appointments. She wants to do everything mom does, so she gets her own little manicure while we are there.

I take Rocco mostly to get his nails cut. I'm to scared to do that myself. His claws can get so sharp and long fast.

I've always liked to take my dogs in for the nail trim, because I'm scared to do it, and I started having someone do the anal glands after a 'mishap'.. Somehow some sprayed up and got on some of my hair. I washed and washed and washed, I could not get the smell out for a few days :icon8: Just the thought of doing it now makes me sick!!!
I really enjoy doing the bathing and brushing, and even the teeth-brushing myself though. I feel like its bonding time. I also use that time to do a little bit of doggie-massage, and its a sneaky way to just check the whole dog for any strange lumps or new things.

Lexie and Jack have pretty much a monthly standing appointment for nails, anals, shampoos, etc. My vet's groomer does a great job; they don't hate me for trimming their nails - and I really don't want to learn how to do the anals, thank you!

I do absolutely everything myself for all of the dogs, grooming is one of my favourite things to do. Tia doesn't need much grooming anyway, aside from the occasional bath (about once a month for her) and nail trim really (once a week).

Both Molly and Henry go to the goomer for nail trim . They don't like having their feet touched (I've tried ) so it takes 2 groomers and a muzzle to do their nails . Plus I feel like the bad guy when I try . So I figured let the groomer be the bad guy . I'll be the wonderful person who rescues them from the torture of nail trimmers. But those two do'nt mind me bathing them . So go figure ? Both Molly and Henry are short/ smooth coats easy up keep .

I used to take Scooter to the groomer in Frankfurt, and I've taken him one time here. But its $$$. More than I spend for a cut on my hair! I try & do it myself... usually takes a few separate "sessions" with lots of snacks! I trim his nails but sometimes I get lazy & take him to the Vet for a trim. The drama-yelping-begins as soon as he sees the clippers!!

I thank heaven that I got a Dachsie that only dislikes baths, even then he is still pretty good. He just stands in the kitchen sink shaking and looking pitiful. But he is awesome about getting his nails clipped :D he just lays on my lap on his back and lets me do his nails, he tolerates having his ears cleaned and his teeth brushed. I totally hate the anal glands smelly nasty icky job but I really hate the butt scootch on my carpet, so I hold my breath use latex gloves and point the furry butt away from me while I do it!
I think the LH and wires are beautiful dogs but I love my smooth baby, so much less grooming/shedding.

Nails get dremeled weekly, a Jar pf peanut butter almost gone lays in front of them on the table while I dremel, keeps them busy licking the jar.
Ears get checked weekly and a cucumber rinse if needed.
Long Hair gets bathed once ever two months or if he gets muddy
Puppy once a month a bath and usually a foot bath to rinse claws after running in mud if he gets yukky
Other wise he sits in front of the tub wanting to go in , he loves the tub.....lol

I take Sailor sometimes... I usually bathe him myself and he's really good about it. Just sometimes it's nice not to have to clean up after. :)

Smooths are wash and wear My wires most of the here groomers would take the clippers to them. That would make a mess of their coats I like doing it takes out the stress of the week by stripping hair

I take Ty about every 7-8 weeks for a complete groom, nails, wash, anals expressed and ears cleaned.
I have now started taking him every 2 weeks to get his nails clipped. He is going to a new groomer....the owners have 6 dachshunds combined and they let Ty play with them while he is waiting to be picked up.

I said "on special occasions". A couple of times a year, Valentin the long hair, goes for a professional grooming and trimming. The other two, short hairs, just get a regular old bath at home. All nails are trimmed professionally.

Well with four it isn't in the budget to get them done at a groomers all the time. With my 2 smoothes they are easy and the LH's I just brush out every other day. I bath them when they need it (seems to be once every 4-5 weeks). I do their nails, but I have asked for a Pedipaws for Christmas. Mine only go for special occasions. But most of the time it is so easy to do I do them.

I don't take my babies to a groomer, I do it myself. Animals are my passion (was gunna be a vet) so I took any course that related to animals in high school and college I could! I can't resist learning more and more!!!!:D
