My 14 week old female is still urinating in her crate. Whether it's the large crate or the samll one. Isn't this a behavior you don't usually see?

She's still young and should be taken out every few hours. I'd say if there is no medical reason - like infection - she should get better. If I'm not wrong I think it's 1 hour to every month so since she is 14 weeks she should be able to wait around 3 hours. I'm sure someone will correct me if that's not right :D

How long do you leave her in there at a time? Do you make sure you take her outside before you have her kennel up?

She has been able to hold it for up to 4 hours. We ALWAYS take her out before we go to bed or go out of the house. She's been urinating in the crate since we got her at 6 weeks. I'm sure it's just a case of taking time and being consistent with what we do.
Lst night, we took her out, she went, then came back in the house and pee'd on the carpet 10 minutes later. I'm sureshe knows it's wrong as we always scold her but for some reason she just seems to be very stubborn.

I know it's frustrating. I just house trained a 1-2 year old foster and she urinated in her crate, too. I just kept taking her out and praising her when she pottied outside. When she peed in her crate, I just took her outside and cleaned it up (cursing a lot of the time). I was really upset about it, I'd never had a dog urinate in the crate before. But she "got it" eventually.

Does she only urinate in the crate at night or also when she's in it during the day? Are you taking her out once during the night? I know it's a pain, but at her age she probably can't wait 8 hours and needs to go. Fourteen weeks is really young.

when she does the right thing praise, praise and treat her. If you don't catch her in the *act* it doesn't do any good to scold her because she doesn't know what she's done wrong. I know it's a trying time right now but she "will get it." Right now I'm training my Dudley who is 20 weeks old. :D I am not crate training him though because I can't always go home for lunch so he's in a small bathroom with papers down. He's doing great and when he's allowed to run free and play he'll either come to me and if I understand he wants to go out I'll take him. If I don't understand what he's trying to tell me he'll go to his papers! So don't give up yet there is hope. ;)

Thanks for all your input. We have caught her in the act several times and have done the scolding thing and then taken her outdoors, we also praise and treat the good behavior. I guess she's just being her stubborn dachsie self and that's ok because it's part of who she is. I just couldn't beleive she would pee in the crate. Oh well, she's just going to take longer than her older brother.

It seems like some of them do this and some don't. I trained Miller, he was 18 months when I got him. He never peed in the crate even though we discovered he had a kidney infection and was completely housebroken is a 2-3 weeks. Then when my foster, Cinnamon, came, it took 6 weeks (or more). Just like us, they're all different. Also the young ones forget awfully easily. Especially when they're distracted or excited. Relax and it will happen. I know that's hard to do when you're cleaning carpets all the time!

Hi there. I'm still training my 'lil guy Charlie who is just over 12 weeks. Luckily though he has Never gone in his crate. But plenty on the floor! We take him out all the time and still he can come in and go right on the floor.

I've asked before about how long training can be and it could still be a few months until there are NO accidents at all. We just keep working at it!

Please make sure that you are scrubbing the crate well when you clean up. If you leave the smell of the urine in there, your dachsie will continue to urinate in there. Be sure to use a strong cleaner and some Lysol to eliminate the urine odor.

I think that a thorough cleaning & continued praise for good behavior will help your dachsie to persevere!

That's a good point, Dana. I use Nature's Miracle and it helped a lot. Even with Cash who feels it's his duty to "mark" things once in a while!
