It looks like Pippin may have to have his anal glands removed. They have been bleeding for a while now. The vet treated him with antibiotics and I thought that had fixed it but they are bleeding again. So it looks like I have no choice but to have them removed. Pipper is 10 1/2 years old but he is in good health otherwise so I am reasonably sure he will come through the surgery ok. But I have heard that sometimes the surgery causes loss of bowel control. Anybody have any experience with anal gland surgery? I'll probably have the old guy neutered while I'm at it for the health benefits. His dad died of prostate cancer so it is a worry for Pippin.

Oh, poor Pippin. His doo-pah is going to be soooo sore! http://dachsie.org/ubb/crying.gif Poor little guy! Let us know when he's going in for the surgery and we all can send prayers his way!

My vet did some of these surgeries, & I never heard a client say it caused any problems. If your vet is good, I doubt that he would be sloppy enough to sever a nerve, which is what the cause probably is.

But I doubt that any of us will ever be blase' about surgery on our pets.

"DOO-PAH?????" Well, that might be the cutest term for that part of the body I have ever heard!!!

Mary, a friend's Westie had to have his anal glands removed; he was eight or nine at the time. It caused no problems whatsoever. Since the goo in the glands just lubricates the...um...extrusion (I need a cute term here! http://dachsie.org/ubb/confused.gif ), the removal shouldn't cause any problems unless the stools are very hard and dry.

Yes, please keep us posted as to the date, etc.!

I talked to my vet this morning. We will probably do the surgery Thursday. That way I can take off Friday and stay home with him. According to my vet the gland is surrounded by the muscles that control the anus and you have to peel that muscle back to get to the gland. That's what can cause the loss of control. He says he's been pretty successful though. I wouldn't do this if its wasn't necessary. I'm also going to neuter him. I had thought about breeding him to Rita but changed my mind. At his age, I think it will be better for his health to have him neutered.

I hope all goes well for Pippin Thursday. My friend's mom has a very fat dachshund and Sissy's anal gland ruptured. It caused her major pain and dripped smelly stuff everywhere. I think Sissy would have been better off had she had her anal glands removed. She also had the bleeding like you describe with Pippin. I hope his little bottom won't be too sore for long. Josie send kisses to you Piipin. She hates it when people go around mashing on things down there!

Mary, we will all be sending major dachsie rays your way on Thursday!!! http://dachsie.org/ubb/bounce.gif

I didn't realize how complicated the surgery had to be, but if your vet's done it before, I'm sure it will be fine. Anyway, keep us posted!!

I dropped Pippin off this morning for his surgery. Keep sending those rays. I'm sure he needs them. My vet said the other vets he has talked to online have not heard of anal glands bleeding like his without signs of infection. They all recommended that we send them off to be biopsied after removal. The possibility that he could have a tumor has been lurking in the back of my mind for a while now. http://dachsie.org/ubb/blue02.gif I appreciate all the encouragement y'all have sent. I will post again when he is out of surgery.

Thank you for all the Dachsie and Catahoula rays. I just spoke with the vet's office and Pippin came through his surgery fine and all his blood work was normal. He was waking up when I called. I'm glad its over.

Mary, so glad to hear that Pippin came through it all so well! Is he home yet? Will he have to be on a special diet for a while? Poor little guy... Hoping he's back to normal fast!

The wieners and I send our best to you both!

I picked Pippin up yesterday afternoon. He was a little groggy from the anethesia and really sore but otherwise ok. He is more active today but I am keeping him crated to keep the other dogs from bothering him. He's just not up to playing with the pups yet. He's eating fine and peeing and pooping but still wants to sleep a lot. I don't think the other dogs missed him since he was only gone for the day and I keep the boys separated while I'm gone anyway. They were all miffed because he got to go with me yesterday morning while they had to stay home. Little did they know. http://dachsie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif.

Pippin here. It hurts when I walk, it hurts when I pee, it hurts when I poop, it hurts when I wag my tail and I seem to be missing some parts. http://dachsie.org/ubb/frown.gif Mom says this was for my own good but it ain't her *** thats hurting. http://dachsie.org/ubb/frown.gif
Thanks for all the dachsie rays, I really needed them. Its nice to know I got friends out there in cyberspace. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smile.gif
