Hannah, my 11 month old doxie has bronchitis. I have had other dogs in the past, but she is my first doxie. I didn't even know that dogs had bronchitis. Is this a common illness with small, short haired dogs? It breaks my heart to see her little 6lb. body convulse with each hacking cough.
With winter approaching should I protect her with a sweater or coat? Here in VA our winters can be mild or very cold. How do you measure a doxie and find attire that's sleeves are not too long for their short legs? Thanks for any info!

Hey there Bernie! Had to say HI, when I saw that you are from Virginia. I live in Chesapeake, VA. About 20 minutes from Virginia Beach. Where at in VA do you live?
Can't offer much advice on Hannah sickness, but I do hope she feels better soon.

Poor Hannah .. we had a outbreak of upper respitorys here last winter the only one that got it really bad was Winston he got bronchitis ... i used a cool mist humidifier (sp) to keep the air moist this seemed to help some ...the vet gave him antibiotics and some cough tablets ... it took him about a week to recover. Hope Miss Hannah is feeling like her old self again soon

The vet also gave Hannah antibiotics and cough tablets. I was able to get her to take one cough pill by hiding it in a small piece of hotdog, but now she won't eat anything. I don't know whether she is feeling worst or she is suspicious of the hotdog. (Doxies are so clever, they can sense a trick) Does anyone have any foods that they have successfully used to hide pills? I am not good at putting the pill in the back of the dog's throat. I don't know what to do when the next dosage is due. I appreciate any ideas.

Try Peanutbutter... works like a charm if you dont like putting the pill in her throat... Winston didnt eat much for a couple days ... i wouldnt worry unless she seems to get worse and not better. With the peanutbutter just take a little bit in your fingers put the pill in it and put the stuff in her mouth ... she will be forced to lick and swallow because the peanut butter is sticky .. make sure you have water ready for her ...you know how gummy that stuff can be ... Good Luck

Hannah spit her pill out 3 times, but with a large dose of peanut butter and me holding her mouth closed she finally swallowed it.
Thanks again Jen, you were a BIG help!

Great ... i know it usually works with my puppers but then again they will eat almost anything ... some of them would eat a pill right out of my hand... if they think one of the others will get it before them ... but for the others its peanutbutter all the way.. hope Hannah feels better soon http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Hi Bernie and Hannah!
Sorry to hear about the sickies. When I had to feed Wotan antibiotics I insisted the vet give me the bubblegum flavored liquid stuff they give cats. He said he didn't know why it wouldn't work and though Wotan still sensed a "trick" he couldn't figure out what it was, the medicine was goooood. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/facelick.gif
Even if Hannah hates bubblegum, the eyedropper method makes it easier than forcing a dachsie's crocodile jaws open to insert something they don't want
As far as sweaters go- check under "Misc.". I think there are some postings going about clothing our pups!
Best health soon,

My dachsie has a lower tracchial infection now and the vet gave us a liquid antibiotic. It's pink and I don't know what flavor it's supposed to be, but it's really easy giving it to her http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif If you can ever get anything in banana flavor I think that's usually a big hit too http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

If vets wanted to really make a tasty medicine for dachsies, they should make it CARROT-flavored!
If you're using liquid, don't open her mouth (teeth), just slide the dropper between her tightly-clenched teeth & her cheek, & squeeze the bulb, but not too fast, give her time to swallow.
If she likes cheese, get a can of that spray EASY CHEESE (by the Cheez Whiz in the cracker section of the store). It's really sticky!
Whether you are using sticky cheese or peanut butter (the dog has to like it), have two lumps of it ready: one with the pill & one without a pill. Give the pill one first, showing them there is a second one. They are usually in a hurry to gulp the first one so they can grab the second one. They usually don't notice the pill, the little greedy guts!
