View Full Version : Hijinx - going to vet today

As I said on the chat last night, Hijinx has NOT been her normal self. While she seemed to make a liar out of me when I started asking on line questions regarding back problems (she got up and started walking around), she is back to acting in pain again today. I'm praying this isn't a back issue, but I need to get her to the vet ASAP (they aren't open just yet).
Symptoms - She squeeks when we go to pick her up - we always cradle her under her belly and she makes in pain squeeks when we do this. She's not eating, and when Chris hand fed her this a.m., she lay on her pillow in the kitchen and ate a bit, but hasn't moved from the pillow since. She's incredibly listless - only wants to sleep and wouldn't walk far this morning to do her business
Positive signs: She is walking and doesn't seem to experience pain when I manipulate her joints. When I woke up this morning she was beside me on the bed - and she couldn't have gotten there unless she jumped up on her own.
I will let you know when I get back from the vet.....

but her tummy was sore when you picked her up. Could she be having a stomach-gastro. problem? She hasn't had any tap water to drink during or since the blackout has she? We are still having to boil our tap water here in Michigan to destroy any bacteria or parasites caused by the power outage. We've been giving Rudy bottled water to drink, but I've almost accidently given him tap water several times. This is just a thought....hope she is feeling better soon!;)

That's a great thought, but they only ever drink bottled water (if I won't drink Toronto tap water, I don't think they should).
She did eat 3/4 of her breakfast with Chris lying beside her, and she's made a few half hearted barks at the landscaping folks cutting the grass, but otherwise she's just not her normal self.
We have vet appointment at 3:30 - I would crate her, but there doesn't seem a need as she's just not moving on her own.

Healing rays to little Hijinx:rayz: :rayz: and let us know how the vet's visit goes. Sounds like it may be gastro/intestinal but it is good to get everything checked out.

Sending rays. I agree it's very hard to tell what may be going on. Have you tried to do a toe test? That is a good starting place to get an idea if it's a neurological problem.

from the vet as to what is going on? I agree that it sounds like tummy trouble, but you NEVER know- our little pups are so resilient though

Good news - doesn't seem to be back trouble
Bad news - we have no idea what else it could be.
I'm very lucky, our vet is very dachsie experienced, has been her vet since she was born, and knows a lot about dachsie back episodes - so he conclusively ruled that out.
He suspects tummy trouble, or perhaps lingering effects of her heat rash - but I'm to keep an eye on her and let her rest for a couple more days.
In true murphy's law - she pranced in their like the belle of the ball - not at all like the listless, unhappy puppy she has been for the past couple of days!
I'll keep an eye on her and keep you all updated.
Cheers
J

It's good to hear that Hijinx doesn't have back problems. The vet has no idea what else it could be? How perplexing! Rayz are coming from Houston to help her :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz:

like the vet said, it vcould be lingering effects from the heat. My Fritzie used to get sick if he was hot for long periods of time...and when he was hot and sick he WAS NOT a happy camper and he let everyone know. You know, I've noticed that everytime I have called and begged my way in to the doctor or vet's office with my son, my parents, my 4 legged babies...no matter how close to death's door they swore they were, the minute we hit the vet or dr office... they perk up and say "i'm just fine". Skooter did it to me when I took her to the vet a couple of weeks ago, hacked and coughed and sneezed, spit, snorted, etc. go in the vet's office, she sitesin my lap ears perked up, flirting with every maale dog in there (yes she's fixed). Not even a sniffle. Fortunately the vet know how to get her started again with just a gentle touch.
I do hope that your little Princess starts feeling better. Her friends from sticky humid Georgia are sending her lots of rays.!
Do let us know how she is doing.

I hope it is something that goes away on its own, or something that is easy to get rid of. Rays headed your way for an uplift of her spirits at home, not just at the vet's! Julia :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz:

Just an idea, did they do a full blood workup on Hijinx?
Know that when I have a dog that eats something they shouldn't or gets dehydrated they sometimes display the symptoms you described.
