Yesterday morning it was raining, Oscar hates to go out in the rain. So we went out anyway for the first morning outing, we stood outside in the rain for 15 minutes and he wouldn't budge (I even put his little raincoat on him!). So back in the house, then we tried again 1/2 later still no pee. So I left work expecting to find a pee when I got home, and there was nothing. So I took him out and we were outside for 15 minutes before he finally went. Now, I don't consider Oscar housetrained, but he held it for 18 hours! Do you think something could be wrong or just stubborn??

Hans, 4.5 yr old stand smooth, has been known to avoid the rain as well. He is 100% house trained and we have not had an accident in at least 4 years.

You may recall the flooding in NJ a few weeks ago. Well, Hans REFUSED to go outside in the horrible rain. He held it for about the same amount of time, but unfortunately, I had stepped outside for a minute and he went in the house.

I think he was just being stubborn.

Many of us probably have a similar story . . . eventually they go . . . it's just a matter of where. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

Penny is okay in the rain (very fast, though!), but the snow is another problem, esp when it is deeper than she is tall.

That's when she is allowed to go in the sawdust in the woodshed.

Is there any place that he could go that is out of the rain, like under an eave or something? I know dogs CAN hold it for a long time, but I don't like to see it happen. The thought of me not being allowed to pee for 18 hrs makes me cringe.

We have a covered patio that the boys can go on if they need to during rainstorms or when there is snow on the ground. Heck Roscoe prefers to go on the concrete if there is too much dew on the grass!!! Rudy though will only go on the patio if he cannot hold it any longer and there is snow on the ground or its raining REALLY HARD. Silly dogs!

Greta is wonderful, no matter the weather. Baylea has the universal problem not only with rain but also if the ground is just WET. Because winter is soon to be here, called our favorite carpenter to build a small Dachsie Doo Doo shed they can easily get to when the flakes fall. I'd rather use a pooper scooper than a snow shovel. He hasn't started yet, but you know how that goes!

Annie's pee place is a graveled area next to our garage. She's perfectly happy to go there unless it's raining, in which case she insists on peeing on the grass unless we manhandle her back to the gravel. I have NO idea what's so inhospitable about wet gravel. Can't imagine her holding it for 18 hours, though. Are you sure he didn't sneak a pee somewhere?

We dont have a covered area for Oscar to go to when the weather is bad. But I guess we should start thinking of something. Strange thing, he'd rather stand at the gate for 10 minutes to get back in, then to just hurry up and go. I do feel bad, but he could have gone in the bathroom, where he's gated in when we leave.

Oscar's Mom, don't feel bad! When he absolutely HAD to go, he went.

Some may scoff at this story, but I swear on Farfie and Peaches that it's true. I used to live on a cul de sac in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where there were just seven houses. Everyone had dogs, which was great because we all had an agreement that the dogs could roam around and go wherever they wanted, and everyone would just clean up his or her own yard. It was also great for puppysitting; we'd take turns when someone was going to be away just overnight.

We were going to Chicago overnight, and Sue and Tony across the street were going to look after Doggerel, my old dachshund. We were leaving early Saturday morning, but Sue had a key to our house, so the plan was that she would come over and get him later in the morning and keep him with her until we got home Sunday night.

Problem was, Sue had misplaced our key and didn't realize it until we had left. When we got home, we were amazed to hear Doggerel inside, barking like crazy. The minute we opened the back door, he FLEW outside and proceeded to pee AND poop simultaneously about three feet beyond the door.

He held it the whole time we were gone. We were impressed! Also worried, afraid that he had somehow damaged himself. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/rolleyes.gif But he was fine. Quite a dog, don't you think? Neither Peaches nor Farfel would have bothered. They would have thought, "Oh well, guess it's the carpet for us!"

Poor old Doggeral but what a good boy! It was raining here really hard all day and although I let Shelbie out in the backyard at the usual intervals it was nothing doing. Then I took her for a quick walk round the block (with little black bag in pocket of course!) to see if that helped - nothing. By 3.30 I noticed she scurried out really quickly and then back in with a look on her face like "Any really good Mummy would have let me do that on the kitchen floor and I hate you It was only when hubby took her out for her ten thirty pre-bed visit and it had stopped raining that she felt really comfortable enough to linger. Nick said he completely understood the look of relief when she could finally do a proper long wee
