Hi everyone. I am just out here looking for a little reassurance. I have to make the dreaded appointment for Otis at the beginning of October and am already feeling a little nervous about it. I really feel bad, as this will be a first, having to drop him off and leave him. I know it is the right thing to do but if anyone has ideas or suggestions on how they and their doggies got throught this, we would appreciate it. Thanks! Otis's mommy, A.

Don't worry, Otis will be fine. It is sad to leave them, but your doing the right thing. When I picked up Oscar he was happy to see me but a little groggy. He was totally fine the next day, like nothing happened.

Dear Otis's Mommy,

First, just know that you are doing the right thing. In the long run this will be better for Otis.

Second, I know it is hard to leave him. Will he be staying overnight or will you pick him up that afternoon? When I had Willi neutered I dropped him off in the morning, did some shopping and ran errands, then I picked him up later in the afternoon (around 3-4pm). I also called at lunch time and the vet was more than happy to talk to me to tell me how he did and that he was sleeping.

When I brought Willi home that night, he was mostly tired. He slept for a few hours and then proceeded to play with his favorite toys for a little while. The next morning he was as good as new. Although I had to take him back 10 days later to get the stitches out, I think now they can do internal stitches that dissolve over time as the incision heals to eliminate that second visit.

Hope this helps!

-Kris

Well I'm glad you know you are doing the right thing. Otis will be a happier and healthier boy if he is neutered now. -Less problems related with testosterone both behavioral and physical.

He will be fine. I dropped Rudy off at about 7:30 AM and they called me when he was done with an update around lunch time. Then I called to check in around 3:00 that afternoon and picked him up at 5:30pm that same night. He was a little sleepy, but very happy to see me. I snuggled him on the couch all night, and the within two days he was completely back to normal. I did take him out on leash only for the first 5 days to insure no stitches were ripped, but after that it was life as usual. You cannot even see a scar.

Rudy is happy, healthy and well adjusted. He is still my sweet happy active boy -just has a few less parts http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wink.gif

Check with your vet and make sure you can call or be called for updates -that helps a lot.

I Had Toby done last month. You can read our story in the General Health Concers. You just need to scroll down a little and you will see it. It's called Neutering, started by me Hceci. Tons of people wrote to me helping me overcome my fears. I was VERY nervous and afraid. It is because of the great support that I received here that we got through the experience being assured that everyone had the same concerns and in the end were happy that they had done it. Toby is just the same as he was before only he does not mark things anymore. A good thing too. He had it out for a bag of cat food at the pet store every time we went there. It must of been a bad brand or something because it never sold and was allways there we went went there. I wish you and Otis the best of Dachsie Luck. We will be waiting to see and update. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/bounce.gif

When I dropped Beanie of at the vets the morning of his operation, I cried. Your feelings are totally normal. Just keep telling yourself that you are doing what is best for Big O.

I have a funny story about this. When my parents got my first doxie, they got him from the humane society and I was in high school. We had to get him fixed within a certain amount of time and did. When he came home I was so surprised to see he had parts missing. I just didn't understand what had happened. I thought they just cut little boy doggies like they did men. Well, I learned quite a lesson!

When I took Twix she was about 4 months old and I picked her up the same day. She slept all that evening and all night then the next day she acted like nothing had happened at all. I was pretty paranoid about her pulling stitches out because she was so active. I agree that it really helps to be able to call or have the vet call you and see how Otis is doing. We will be waiting to hear how he did.

Teresa and Twix

PS-Twix just came in and said to tell Otis it is a piece of cake, although they don't give you any cake to eat!

More reassurance from here! Otis will be just fine--it will probably be less stressful for him than it is for his mommy! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/eek.gif

I've had three dachsies and neutered/spayed them all. The boys,in particular, just sail through this procedure. Farfel walked out of the vet's office as if nothing had happened. He was sleepy, but he wasn't in pain or traumatized at all. A few days after the procedure, he must have felt a little itchy because he would suddenly lift his leg while he was lying down and lick the incision area for a minute. That was the only sign that anything had happened.

Do ask your vet to call you when the surgery is over--it's just comforting to know that it's over and all went well.

I really believe that neutering your dog is a great gift--to the dog and to the world of animals in general. Good for you for doing this!

Let us know how it goes. We'll be thinking of Otis on the Big Day and will send him lots of Dachsie Rayzzzzz. (They are very powerful healers!) http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/kiss2.gif

It's "normal" for us Parents to be stressed out when our babies have to have surgery or are hurt in any way. Especially if we feel we have caused the owie.

A few years ago I put some bug spray on my horse Felicia. By the time I got home in the early PM, she had a horrible chemical burn all over her chest and underside by her nipples. While I washed her with baking soda and pampered her I felt like a big rat...

Neutering isn't that bad on the animals- mostly on mommys and daddys. Have some nummy treats and a new squeaky toy on hand for the innocent when he gets home!

My Annie is the biggest wuss in the world and I dreaded having to leave her at the vet's overnight when she was spayed. She weathered it surprisingly well, though--I think she was asleep for most of her stay! I made it up to her by letting her sleep on my tummy for the entire next day.

Everyone's posts made me feel much better. I just dropped Betty off to be spayed this morning and am worried about her. I already called the vet and said that everything went fine, but that she is still very groggy. My DH is taking tomorrow off so that someone is home with her during the day.
