View Full Version : How much do your longhairs shed?

I cannot remember Brekke shedding like this! She is now 2 years and almost 2 months old. Her first year I brushed out her hair and it came out in the brush. After about 18 months, I could pluck out loose hair. Now, I find clumps of hair, I can still brush out huge amounts, and if I rub a shoe with a ridged sole across the carpet, I can roll up at least 1/2 cup of fur! She has LOTS of hair, but does anyone else have this going on with your longhair(s)? Julia

How often do you groom her? When Molly came to us, she had not been combed on a regular schedule, and it was weeks before I was able to get all the dead hair out of her coat. I comb with a flea comb, which really seems to get down into the coat. If we don't comb Molly several times a week, she gets into the same state again.

That said, does Brekke have any bald spots? Do you think it might be a medical problem?

I've been having the same thing with Cash recently. I even asked him the other day if he was going bald! I brush him and the brush is full. Then later I find clumps of hair on the floor. I'm not sure what's going on. I'm going to take him to the groomer this week and see if we can get rid of some of this hair!

and I still have this problem - sigh! Thank you, Lisa H, and Patrice (lotsadox) has seen my girl - she has more hair than any other longhair I have seen so far! I guess maybe it is a combination of blowing her coat again, and shedding from the heat? I asked the groomer about shaving her, and she didn't want to do it, saying her coat might not grow back. So, do you think I am stuck with this situation? She is extremely healthy! Julia

My long hairs like clockwork start shedding in late spring here. I brush them daily, but still have the shedding till about July. Both Mirri and Magic now have thinner coats but starting in November and by January I will have bushes again. They still shed hair yearly but it is really bad in late spring due to our long winters here. I vacuum certain areas daily where they hang out. That keeps the hair problem down. But I still have it all over, part of having long hairs!

Juney's daddy was a beautiful red long-haired boy when he lived in California. When he moved to Arizona, he lost a lot of his hair and it was much thinner, but I thought he was still beautiful.

Juney's breeder thought it might have been the extreme heat that we have here. I know that much of the nation has been having Arizona heat, so maybe that's why so much shedding is occurring.

I keep Frankie's hair cut short, so I don't have the shedding problem. I don't like how the hair on the LH looks fuzzy....................

I find a lot of Franks hairs all over the place. Tanner seems to keep most of his till a flea comb is run through it then I get to collect several hand fulls. I find it best to comb them an average of twice a week. I suspect they migh benefit by even more frequent combing but we are lucky if I get the twice a week accomplished. Go too long and you end up with matts especially behind the ears. The only trimming we wo is on the feet both tops and pads and the ocassional rea leg feathrs. When I first got Tanner severa people thought part of the reason he had such a wire like coat was becuase he may have been clipped short at some point. It took between one and two years for his coat to smoot back out to the nice soft texture a dachshund LH should have. I would not recommend an overally body clipping. Besides while I haven't read this specifically about dachsunds but in many LH breeds they say the LH actually helps insulate them against the heat and if trimmed too close the dog will actually suffer more form the hot weather. Dexter ays he is happy to be a smooth coat boy who doesn't ahve to worry about all those extra grooming issues. Getting toemnials cut is a big enough stress for him.

Is it true the smoothes shed more than the LH? A friend of mine has a beagle mix and it sheds terribly....................Anyone have any insight on this?

I am guilty of having Frankie clipped because I thought it kept her cooler in the summer......... I just don't like the fuzzy look on the legs and the long hair on the sides.:o

Differnt breeds shed differnt amounts. Among dachsunds the smooths have the reputation of not shedding much at all. I sometimes wonder if they really don't shed that much or if it's just that their hair being so short is not that visible to us when they shed. I know ewhen smooths are the only dachsunds in a home you can sometimes find yourself looking at a hair you found trying to determine if it's a dachsie hair or an eyelash.

Since only having Cassie this short time, she is shedding some of her hair too.
Ofcourse she had sarcoptic mange and that attacks the hair folicles. SHe does not have alot of long flowing hair. Her tail still looks like it should be on a smooth. The vet said to give it till December to see if it grows back. It may not.
Oh well she is still beautiful...:D

I read somewhere that it takes 2 years for a long haired dachsie to grow their hair to full length. Is that true?

Bailey is going to be a year in November and right now she has a lot of long hair on her ears, bum, and tail but no where else really. Are there different "levels" of long hair?

Rosco is a smooth coat and he sheds more than Bailey.

When I got Tanner he pretty much had a rat tail despite having very thick body hair. It took well over a year perhaps closet to two before his filled out. Perhaps not a show dog tail but looks very nice to me now:)

Molly has REALLY long hair, and I encourage the groomers to give her a haircut! Her hair will grow 8 inches long on the sides, I swear. I think it tends to grow longer as they get older, and Molly is 12.

I don't think you should have Brekke shaved, but a good haircut wouldn't hurt! ;-)

When I first decided I wanted a chocolate/tan, the longhair puppy was the first one available - so I got her. People had been telling me for months how mellow the longhairs are. Then they told me she would have her full coat at 2 years.

Here are the facts as I know them!
Mellow - not until age 2, and she is still my most frequent and loudest barker.
Coat - after she hit 2 and still has fluffly spots that are clearly NOT adult hair, many breeders have told me longhairs often don't get their full coat until age 3.

My smooths shed a whole lot more! I brush them maybe once a week, and when I do a load of dog laundry - it's all red or black hair. The chocolate hair comes off in the brush or on the carpet where Brekke lays. Julia

was when Rudy had the worst shedding episode. It didn't come out in clumps or anything but it was quite noticeable on our dark clothing. Normally he just sheds lightly and a daily brushing helps to control it. August is almost over and I'm still waiting to see if he has a heavy shed.

I have always loved the comments "I want a smooth because they don't shed". Hmmm, maybe their experience is they don't shed but MY experience is certainly different. Smooths shed!!!! Their hair tends to stick IN ME and in furniture (except for leather of course). However, they are much easier to bathe and to watch it go down the drain.
Longhairs shed and I have found it easier to sweep up as it makes lovely dust bunnies and I find it lays on top of the furniture nicer and makes it easier to brush off :)
The chocolate and tan coat hair is much different in texture from the other colors which is why it tends to be fluffier/many times drier looking than the black and tans and reds. It is mainly the undercoat texture opposed to the sillkier texture of the black and tan top coat - you know, the type that lays nice and flat and has the lovely sheen. The chocolate and tan coats frequently need a much heavier coat conditioner to get it to lay flat and to get a sheen to it. Also, the higher quality food you feed the deeper the color intensity you will achieve - amazingly so. The color of a chocolate and tan bleaches out very easily.

It does seem that the shorter the hair, the more the dog sheds! My neighbor has a white shepherd mix with quite short hair who gives off clouds of hair every time you pet her. I've noticed this with many short-haired dogs.
