:dog: How often should a short haired dachsie be bathed? Since dachsies don't have the doggie odor of other breeds, when do you know if they need a bath? Also how much is too often? Can not bathing often enough cause itching and can bathing too often cause itching? Also if the yard is sprayed for bugs, fleas, ticks, ect, is it necessary to use a topical application on your dachsies such as front line plus?

I rarely bathe my smooth coat dachsies. Mostly just if they get in something stinky. I rub them down with a damp towel once in a while, but that's about all. Bathing too often especially if you use a harsh shampoo, can cause dry skin and itching.
I use something similar to Fleabusters only not so toxic in my house once every few years and don't have any flea problems. I don't use Frontline or anything like that. I have 2 smooth coats and 2 long hairs. They live in the house and on the rare occasion that one of them brings in any fleas they die as soon as they come in contact with the carpet, so I don't have any problems.

You will get many differnt views on this issue. I too am a believer in not over bathing our little ones. I would guess my boys average at the most two baths a year. Flears are an almost unheard of problem in this area so I can't help you on htat subject. IF the boys start to get a little odor but not bad I'll sometimes use a pump spray wet baby powder sented cleaner (made for dogs). Thank goodness my crew are not big roller in the stinky stuff or at least seldom have the chance to get into stinky things. There can be special healt issues with some dogs that may require more or less ffrequent bathing. While I know some people use human shampoos and cream rinses on their dog I like to use a mild shampoo formulated for dogs. I still have a bottle of a coal tar based dog shampoo that I bought for one of the kids when they were having some skin issues. IT might have been for Aggie my mill mother rescue. Coal tar is used in many medicated shampoos for bvoth humans and other animals.. I have one friend that sometimes will sprinkle on baby powder then comb out the excess when her dog gets a little stinky.
The boys last bath was in late April when Frank and I ran a race on some very wet streets. A dog covered in oil and sand from the roads is a dog in need of a good bath. In general it is a one gets a bath they all get baths policy here. The exception would be if one got into someting really stinky not too long after they had gotten the last bath. I we lived near a bocy of water and they could go swimmming baths would be requireed on a more regular basis.

Both of mine are smooth coats. I bathe them once a month. I do it the day it is time for the Advantage flea protection. I use Bo Derek's Bless The Beast shampoo. It is very gentle, and has a nice odor to it.

is not a hot idea, unless of course your furkid has rolled in something smelly etc. It strips them of oils that are beneficial. You also want to remember to NOT put flea meds 2 days before and 2 days after a bath for it to be the most effective.
I bathe CHief about 2x a year. He gets wiped down with baby wipes after our walks in the city.

The only time I bathe the smooth girls more frequently than a couple times a year is when we do smelly rolls or when we have a medical problem. Kibby is getting an allergy shampoo about once a month now and Tess -- well, Tess found a ring worm somewhere, so she is getting the special shampoo and cream twice a week for 2 months...
And yes, to be effective, Frontline, Advantage, and Advantix should be applied 2-3 days after bathing and baths should not be given for 2-3 days after application or you are wasting your money. They require the skin oils to be effective.

I bathe Owen only when I encounter any of the following:
Day a the Beach
Sprayed by a skunk
Rolled in Stink
Find my fingers have turned black after petting him
I still have the same bottle of shampoo I bought when I got him over 4 years ago ;)
It's really important that if you apply a topical free treatment to wait at least 24 hours after a bath to apply it. They need to regenerate some of their natural oils in order to absorb it properly.

Ohhhh once or twice. Actually, he was just sprayed again about 2 weeks ago. I ran home and grabbed the special de-skunking shampoo (I was baby sitting) and came back and gave him a good soak with it. That's when the term "Stinker" really fits.
He sniffs out skunks for miles away and goes right to 'em. No fear, never learns.

I must have the stinkiest doxies around. I don't bathe them to often, because of the sensitive skin problems. I use medicated shampoos just for dogs. But it seems like they sure do get stinky fast. I thought it was mostly from chewing on each other then going outside and rolling in the lawn. Were if they can find the bird or bunny poo, is the place to roll.
So my guys always seem to need a bath. Time for Ivy to get trimmed too. She got the feet trimming the other day. I thought we would break her in slowly. :blue: :sarcastic Shhh I can't say bath or brush to loud around here. ;)
Yes when they are out in the woods they find anything that is rotten to roll in. :dizzy: Did you ever drive 2 hours with a smelly dog. Ugh!
Actually 3 smelly dogs. If one finds something good they like to share the wealth.:dog: :dog: :dog:
I would say "as needed". I wouldn't bathe more than once every 6-8 weeks. As the others have said once or twice a year. If they have a skin problem you would probably have to give them a bath more often but not more than once a week.
Also if you do use Advantage or Frontline you may use a "no soap" shampoo which will not remove your flea products.
Mine are bathed 2-3 times a year, and that's when I have to kennel them. I find that there is rarely any odor, except when one finds something stinky in the yard. Peeyewwww! Then I will bathe them with special doggie shampoo. I've had the same bottle for years.

Frankie is a LH, but I'll put my two cents in.............I have her groomed every 6 - 8 weeks. She never has an odor. Last year when she had a skin allergy, the vet sold me two bottles. One was a shampoo ($20.00) and the other was a conditioner ($20.00). The vet told me to bathe her twice a week! I thought that was outrageous. I thought it was too often, but then I realized they probably wanted me to use it up so I could go back and spend another $40.00!
Tiffany had such dry skin, that I used to have them give her a hot oil treatment.

Molly doesn't really need baths, but she insists on one when Sammy gets one, which isn't as often as he should. If he gets all that attention, she can't be left out, but she soon remembers each time how much she hates the water.
We use Frontline faithfully in the spring and summer because fleas are horrible where we live, and with a long haired dog, it's too hard to control them any other way. We haven't seen a flea in our house in almost two years. To cut down on costs, we don't stop the Frontline as soon as it gets cooler in the fall and omit it all winter long and have never had a problem.
Actually, we forgot what fleas were like until when we got the puppies, and they had a few fleas. However, they were too young for baths, so we just picked the fleas off of them. It's been at least two weeks that they have been flea free.

Aug and Bud get showers (yes showers) about two to three times a month. Aug will just walk in after I turn on the water, Bud needs some more effort to get in.
Johnsons baby shampoo is what we use, no more tears!
At the end, they want their shower message, so I set it on pulse and they stand there and stretch out their necks.
Spoiled rotten. Even when wet.

TODAY Willow got into some extra special "perfume"! Wheeeeehoo!
We went to the lake to help my brother launch his boat. (To get a little outing :) ) While I was pushing the boat off from shore Willow was finding a pile of something awful. I waved my brother off as he head out to do some fishing and turned to see Willow wallowing in goo. I think it was an old pile of leaches someone had dumped out of their bait bucket. But it was decayed too much to be sure. The ride home in the truck with her was no picnic! Believe you me! :D
So, bath time for Willow! Her harness got a good scrubbing too.
