If I recall someone brought this up a while back, but I can't remember the info! My Freddie's hair is thinning on temple and on top of ears. What causes this? PENNY'S AUNT?? Is it hereditary? What is it called? Anybody else's dachsie have this?

Susan

P.S...I'm formally 'Doxielover'. Something went haywire and it couldn't be fixed!

Is this something new? How old is your pupper now?

Are you sure it isn't friction burns from digging in blankies?

Its a smooth thing. You might check his thyroid and try massaging a little vitamin e oil or gel into his ears and temple area. Wheeler has this problem his hair is also thin on his neck and chest.

Lucy is a longhair, 1.5 yrs old and has similar problem. Especially "bald" is her neck on her front side. I thought her collar was too wide but the hair is even thinner since I got a thinner collar! I asked about this a year or so ago on this board and was assured her coat wouldn't be full till 3 years old. It does seem much thicker now. But the neck and a spot on her chest are almost hairless!!

Penny's Aunt, could she really rub off her hair from digging? The spot on her chest could be from this.

I did notice thinning hair on the temples of the smooth and one of the longhaired dogs at the breeder I got Lucy from. The breeder said that happened in females after they had puppies and were still nursing.

Is this the case?

Time for me to add to the confusion! Peaches has nearly bald ears, and my vet told me that smooth dachshunds were prone to hair loss on the ears. Of unknown origin, natch! That's all I know! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/caffeine.gif

I agree with Pamela.... Some doggies are just prone to hair loss (like humans). Buddy, my friend's red smooth, is missing hair on his tail, his belly, parts of his ears... I think part of it with Buddy is his poor breeding (he came out of a petshop).

My vet. told me that some doxies get bald on their chests from running in the grass and being so low to the ground... it kinda rubs it off... same thing as friction burns i guess maybe? Tader is the only one this has ever happened to ... and i have also heard that the dilute colors have more trouble with this... i just started putting a tshirt on him and his fur grew back nice and thick as before. I have never had any of my doxies loose hair on their ears though.

Yes, they can wear it off from doing certain things. Like the dogs that always seem to have a sore on the top of their nose from pushing (& trying to retrieve) toys under the couch or refrigerator.

But I think a lot of the hair loss is probably more common in certain lines of dachsies. Esp where it is on the head & ears, & other places where friction usually isn't an issue.

Just watch for little bumps or a rash, which could indicate scabies (sarcoptic mange) or an allergy or something that a vet could diagnose.
