Aug got into a pac of those silica gel beads, don't know where he got it from but he ate them.
I paniced, Then I remembered a prior post about poison and peroxide. I knew the silica was not an acid so him bringing it up was not a problem. In the peroxide went, well maybe too much, 5 tablespoons. Then I got on the phone to animal poison control while my wife held his head over the sink. It all came out but the OD on peroxide burned his guts a bit. Doc said an antiacid will help but Aug is not willingly taking anything I give him now
Thanks you guys for posting your stories. It just may have saved Aug and me a lot of misery.

David,
Poor Aug! Poor you! I'm curious if you have an idea of the time between when he ate it, and when you realized it? I'm wondering how much time would still be safe? You probably had a shoe box laying on the floor or something. That silica is always in them, or in purses.

We were to bed for about 2 hours when Aug heard natue call. I staggered out kitchen, more than usual early this morning. (car broke down, had to have it towed, really windy and cold, I think I caught one too, feel my head will go pop)
I opened the door (cold, windy, would not go outside) he curled up on the kitchen rug in front of the heater duct. I got some tissues to blow my nose and flopped on the chair. I heard him chewing on something in the kitchen, chew stick I thought, until I heard "little marbles" bouncing on the floor. I went to the kichen and he was munching on something then I seen what it was.
I stuck my fingers in his mouth to get as much as I could out and locked him in his pen. I booted the PC and woke Shenn to tell her what happend. I went to the post on poison on this thread and told Shenn to get the peroxide. I know the first step is to call the poison control center for animals, but I knew that those beads were not caustic or acidic. Making sure all of it was out was my goal.
Instead of teaspoons I used tablespoons (ooops) nothing happend, did mustard, ( aug was not very happy with me at this point) I was on the phone with control center giving them info. Btw, mustard is not recomended by them.
After a minute the barf machine started. He yacked 3 times.
After that outside he when to poop. We got the floor dragon out and vacuumed the kitchen rugs and floor to get every bit of silica up.
I stayed up with him to make sure he is ok.
He is quiet, good my head is pounding.
Got to watch him for the next 24 hours, to make sure.

Tell Augie that if he wants to be president, he needs to quit eating everything he finds! Glad he's okay and I am sure he will forgive you for making him throw up! Rena

Figured out where that packet came from, Shenn got a package from QVC, she put the pack stuff in the garbage, but the packet fell out before she threw the material out. I must have been along the wall where the garbage can is and she did not notice it.
She is upset that she did it.

David,
I'm glad to hear Augie is doing fine. Your post serves as a good warning to all of us as Christmas is fast approaching. So many things ship with the silica packets. Don't worry Augie won't stay mad at you too long. Another way you can induce vomiting is by pouring salt down their throat. My folks vet once had us do that when we observed one of my folks dachshunds making her last big gulp just before realizing on of my mom's anklet cotton socks was missing. I think we started with a teaspoon but I can't really remember for sure. The hydrogen peroxide is a preferred method and of course most vets recommend you get them to a vet asap and let them use the eye drops to induce vomiting rather than use home measures.
By the way Frank was trying to eat a paper towel he robbed out of the trash last night that had some fresh latex calking on it. I caught him before he had a chance to really consume any of it.
Best wishes,

Oh my! I just read your post David, how scary! I am so glad our Augie is okay. Tell your wife not to feel too bad. There are a million little things, and if we over-
look them, YES they will find them! Kevin sometimes calls Otis a "scavenger buzzard." Like I've said before, it is just like having a toddler!! We know you love Aug and try your very best to keep him safe. I hope you aren't getting sick for the holidays, and that you both feel 100%, soon!

Using salt or saltwater isn't the preferred method, unless you don't have anything else. There is such a thing as Salt Poisoning. And don't use it on a dog with a heart problem.
BTW, it doesn't take much salt to cause vomiting. AND HOW DO YOU KNOW, THEY ASKED? I was dipping green onions in salt & eating them while dinner cooked one night. I must have oversalted them, because I nearly didn't even make from the stove to the kitchen sink.

David, I just read this post, so glad Aug is ok.
Those little packets make me nervous. When ever I get new shoes (which I do alothttp://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/uh-oh.gif)
There is always those little bead packets. One day I found one on the floor by the trash can , it must have fell out of the bag. I picked it up before the dogs found it (Bailey would have eaten it, as he eats everythinghttp://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/oogle.gif)
SO glad that Augie is doing better, must have been quite scary for you both.
Linda
