View Full Version : How many nylabones?

Just wondering how often you guys give your puppers treats like nylabones. My guys are at a great weight, and we're maintaining it well. I'm trying to take them for daily walks in addition to letting them run as much as they want in the back yard. They also attend a full day of daycare once a week. They're getting plenty of excercise, so I'm wondering if they can have one petite nylabone daily, or if this is too much? They seem to digest them fine. I'm more curious about the caloric content...............
Is there a better treat that would take as long to eat, but that they could also have daily?
Are you saying your doxie can gnaw down a Nylabone in one sitting? I buy the regular sizes (one size larger than petite) and just keep them around the house all the time. They last for weeks, if not a couple of months, so it's never an issue if they are consuming too much.

Yep, they sure do! They each had a petite peanut one tonight, and Bailey finished in 20 minutes, Baxter in 30. Let me be clear, though, these are the edible ones. Nylabone makes edible and durable ones. My guys have never had the durable ones, just the edible ones. I might try those. Do your puppers chew them as much as other things? My guys are not really aggressive chewers, except for a few special toys. They each have a rope chew and one or two stuffed animals that they chew. I've gotten them some toys made for chewing, but they're not interested really. I have been able to keep them occupied with the edible nylabones as needed.
Also, to be clear, I don't plan to feed them a bone each day (no way I could even afford to), but just wondered if it would be OK to (like they may get a stretch of three days for example).

Perhaps you are referring to greenies? I have Nylabones around here that are as much as 6 years old, but a greenie will last Siglen about 7 minutes, Brekke takes 12 minutes, Gretl takes about 15 minutes, and Sorcha can take up to 23 minutes - I always supervise greenies, and I toss out Nylabones when they get about 1 1/2" long. Are they the eddible nylabones? If so... Jake goes through them pretty fast too... he will eat 2/3s of it... and then take a month to finish the last 1/3 :D
I stopped giving them to Jake for a while... Once Woody's mouth is done teething... I will give them to both boys again!

Let the rib test be your guide:) If they start putting on weight then you know they are getting too much and it will be time to cut back some place.
When I do get nylabones I go to the next size up and they are gone in perhaps 15 minutes. Theyse are special treats for my boys they get them less than once a month on average. Regular treats include puperonies for keneling when I go to work and th Nupro lam chop shaped biskets.

Your pupperoni comment made me think of something. My boys get mini nawsomes for crating, and they seem to think they are the best treats ever! Even Baxter will willingly crate for them (usually I have to put him in there and then he's fine). What other treats do your puppers go wild over?
Yes Jennie, all I get is the durable nylabones. I have gotten the edible ones in the past but found them too crumbly, and like your dogs, mine can rip through them too fast. I leave the durable ones out for them to chew on whenever they get the urge.

:circle: We have seen a zillion little 90% consumed "Snack Bones" (that's what the edible Nylabones are called) get trashed. They don't appreciate them as much when they get too little to prop up, and by then, they're too little for safety's sake anyway. Greenie's go just as fast around here (and are always 100% eaten). In fact, there's not much that can outlast my two teething puppies... :sarcastic

You mean somone's puppers will actually spend time working on the durable nylabones? My boys and not of the other dogs I've seem will pay any attention to them. If you can get them to keep them in their mouth for over a second you are doing well. I guess my boys figure if they aren't eddible or someting with stuffings that you can pull out then it's not worth spending their time with it:).

My crew hates durables, but I have found that some of the edibles last forever, so that is what we have been working on lately.
