My doxie is red with a lot of black on her back and around her face. The person I purchased her from said she would lose all her black and be a red dachshund. Is this true? I think she's cute with her black as well but I was wondering if she was going to truly shed it all. I noticed a few of you have dogs of this type, do you know when they'll all be losing their black?

I have owned two LH reds, both with black edged ears and black heavily through the coat. My first long hair Marco never lost the black at all. My puppy Mirri now 13 weeks I doubt will. Reds though will change shading through the year between the winter and summer coats. It also stated that a good balanced diet will even deepen the red coat. I do not know if some reds lose the black shading but mine and a good friend's of mine (she has two reds with black edged ears as mine..now 8) never did.

My Tristan was a red with a pronounced dark "racing stripe" on his back as a puppy. When his coat grew in (longhair), the stripe did get integrated and wasn't very visible. He did keep the dark fringe on his ears, though.
Angel as 16 weeks has a LOT more black that doesn't seem to be fading, but she's so young it's hard to say. I think sometimes they keep the black overlay. I hope she does, because it's pretty.:flower: She looks similar to Nina. Is Nina longhaired? She's SO cute!!

I had a red smooth that started out looking like a black and red. By the time she was a year old all of the black was gone, so it can happen.

Nina is a shorthair which I think is cute, but the more I see these long hair doxies the more I start to like them. They seem more regal. I like Nina's black, it seems to give her a lot more character! Thank you for all your info, can you believe it is quite hard to find this info anywhere else! I'll keep you all updated as to how Nina's color changes!

who had the black stripe, as well as the tail and ears. The ears gradually turned red, but the stripe and tail were black when Heidi-Angel crossed the Bridge at almost 15 (just 3 weeks shy!), Gretl is 14, and Siglen is 8 - and they still have somewhat of a stripe, but the tails are black. Julia B.
