I'm talking about traditional Housebreaking where you take them outside to do their business ~ not a Litter Box or Pads (Only because I'm taking Charlie outside & I want to know HOW LONG????) It'll be winter here soon......

lucky with Kamper and Maggie they learned that very well. It helped having a doogie door for them to use.
I praised them so much and so loud they loved getting their treats and momie just making such a fuss.

It has varied. The best puppy was Tessie who was about 2 months. Stinker trained her how to use the dog door and she has been very reliable. I did, however, have one dog that I trained with pottie pads when she was a puppy that was still not reliable at 6 years (hence I don't use pads any more). I have also had to train several adult dogs that were kept outside before I got them. Most of these take about 4 months, though some are a week or less.

With my three it varied. With Magic she was 5 months, Misty if i remember about 3 1/2 months. Mirri my new addition was our best record...under 3 months 90% of the time. My first dachi Marco was the hardest to house break. He finally got it at 7 months. His record till then was 50/50. House breaking for us was newspaper to phasing outside at about 11 weeks. I know it's stange, but dead of winter here is very cold and snowy. We revert to newspapers during that period. My older two will not go out in bitter cold.
House broken, what's that?? :D Mine are all seniors but we try to work on it. We do use lots of papers though.

What can I say just when they are doing good and no accidents lately. Then Con pees in my bed. But we are checking into that, with the vet.
If you get a kennel dog that has never had to keep his living area clean maybe never. But then you just have to keep an eye on them or let them out alot. Ya just gotta luv'em. They're doxies!:sarcastic

You guys give me hope!!!! YEAH! Most of those who voted are in the 4 - 6 Months range and my Charlie is just over 4 months. I can't wait. We love him lots and take him out all the time.....but then he'll surprise us!

A lot of it is just routine and patience. I got Taffy from a shelter, where she had only been for three days as a surrender. I had no idea what her training had been before that, but she didn't seem to have any real experience with going outside over going inside. We just started taking her out every few hours, and any time she started sniffing the floor.
After cleaning the carpet a few times, we got very good at noticing the signs that we had better be moving along
It's important to clean the spots up very well, and keep them away from them. I wish Taffy would bark when she walks over to the door. We will work on that next.

Tia's been the hardest dog to fully house train. She's now 6 and still has accidents occasionally. She think she's a little princess and hates being outside if it's too hot, too cold, too wet, too loud etc. She's getting better though but I honestly have given up hope that we'll ever fully be able to trust her....

Well, now, ...Arnie actually is GREAT--has been from day one and he was 3 months old when we got him.
The other two-----it depends upon whether the ghost is in the house or not. See, there's ONE room Dieter and Ludie CAN'T resist pooping in---we always keep the door to it closed, but, then the ghost comes and, not only opens the door, but encourages them to do their business in there. So, I'm not sure I can really blame Dieter and Ludie, paranormal pressure being exerted upon them, for sure, because, being Dachsies---they wouldn't DREAM of it otherwise, right???? ...I think the ghost even gives them treats for doing it.

We had tried everything to get Abby potty trained and eventually went to litter. It seems to have worked for us and it's soooo convenient. She has been doing very, very well....and today, poop on the carpet. UGH. She's 18 months old, does it ever end?

Well, everyone is probably sick of me saying how intelligent Josh is but we got him at 10 weeks from the breeder and he was trained realiably in a week!
My husband didn't understand that wasn't the norm and when we got Auggie at nine weeks from another breeder and he was very slow- almost a year old-there was a lot of frustration. I think Auggie was kept in a cage and maybe it wasn't cleaned as often as it should have been and he got into the habit of not minding. He is three and will occasionally have an accident in the house; the bed is his place to go as I noticed someone else mentioned.
Gabe, our mixed whatever, was found abandoned and we adopted him from the shelter. He is about 9 months old now and is usually reliable. He does go to the door a lot of times and just wants to play when he gets out there which frustrates my husband but we dare not take a chance when he is at the door even if he just went.
We did start, with all three of them, taking them on a leash to one designated spot in the yard and saying go potty. I get very excited and give lots of praise when Gabe goes right away; my neighbors probably think I'm crazy but that's okay if it works! We have to keep them on a leash at all times anyway as we live in a condo and near a busy highway.

You mean Dachshunds can be housebroken????? :wow3:
Kidding....Petey was trained to the pads within about four weeks of getting him, so he was around 10 weeks old. HOWEVER...we're still working on the whole pottying outside deal. And he still sneaks under my bed occasionally to leave a rather unnecessary surprise :pullhair:

I was so lucky with my little guy. I kept him on a consistent scheduled 2-3 times per night. My husband is home with him all day and he was also able to be on a schedule during the day. So I was lucky to have him trained within 3 months. He has only had 2 accidents and he is almost 3 years old. Both of which were our fault and not his. He tried to tell us but we did not see him in time. The only thing he does not do it bark or make some kind of noise when he has to go. He will either sit in front of the door or if we are in the basement, he will sit at the bottom of the steps and keep looking at you until you notice him.
He is an awesome little boy and my little HERO.

Well, couldn't vote because I don't know - mine were adopted and housetrained (well, as housetrained as a dachsie can get) so I didn't have to worry about it! That's the ONLY way to go!!! Rescues rule :)

Had to pick the 7 month answer because Lexi will only be 7 months this week, but as far as potty trained - NO WAY!!!! She loves the outside and will go if out there, but at the same time she will go inside if she doesn't get your attention fast enough or she just doesn't feel like going out. This week she has started to go right at MY FEET!!!! when she is not happy or getting her way about something. I'm not giving up but at the same time I don't think she will ever be fully trained. Ugh!!

This is more technical a question than you would think. Dachshunds housebreak their owners first.
Skyler was around 6 months old when we were fairly sure he could roam around in the house a bit without an issue. But he was 3 YEARS old before he really learned to signal us when he had to go outside. So we've always just taken him out about every 3 hours. He trained us to that.

I consider a dachsie housebroken if it has less than one poop accident every couple of weeks, lol. With that in mind, Buffy was housebroken in just a few weeks. She was crate trained and while I felt like a big meanie, it worked like a charm. I also believe that in the beginning I was more trained that she was. For the first six months of her life I took her out approx. every 2 to 3 hours around the clock. My neighbor actually told me once that I'd have gotten more rest if I'd had a baby.

Got him at 10 weeks of age. Now he is 28 weeks old, He never left a Tootie ROLL in the house, did have some mishaps with Lemon aid. However from week 15 not a incident inside the house and fortunately from week 16 till now he has had Poochie Bells he rings to go out. Best was this morning, 6:10am it was 29 degrees, he was sound a sleep in his crate I got up to make some tea, opened the door to his crate he was sleepy eyed I went to the kitchen and started the water had time to clean cup from last night and ring ring ring he was chiming those bells. Went to the Door he hit em again put on my coat he hit the bells again , take him out and he does a poop and a pee real fast and big, goes back in and back into bed he sleeps. Just love those bells and this puppydoesnt mind the cold one bit, Its play time with dad for him. FUN FUN FUN.....

Molly was housebroken when I got her at 8 weeks I believe (lucky, right?).
She was trained to let someone know when she has to go out and she is trained on puppy pads, so for a while I just let her go on puppy pads and now we do both, but she won't go out if it's too cold or if it's raining.

We used the puddle pads initially, because he was only 9 weeks old when he came to us and it was January in Chicago with a foot of snow.brrrr
But we had him in the basement laundry room which is tiled, gated off with his crate in there, and pads all over the floor. He couldn't help but go on them unless he wanted to go in his crate.
After a few weeks we eliminated all but one pad outside his crate and he still hit it.
We were taking him outside also but that was hit or miss and he was so small it was tough to see if he was peeing.
When we were able to supervise him we made sure there was a pad nearby in the kitchen and put him on it every 20 minutes and he'd go then we'd play some more. He had a few accidents if we goofed up but we used Natures Miracle and didn't make a fuss at him.
By March he was bigger, it was warmer and more used to going outside and he was 90% trained. He has really regular habits.

Julie is a mixed breed dashie I got from the pound. She took two weeks. 100 percent reliable. I have a baby only 12 weeks, and not there yet. Time will tell.
She is crate trained, but not potty trained. She uses the dog door to go out but has not yet associated it with going out to pee or poop. She is doing better at peeing, as I take her out often, but poops are almost always inside.
