View Full Version : Biting at feet/legs

Just the last few days, Mickey has been biting at his feet/leg, like they are very itchy. He's at them a lot. I looked to see if there was something irriating the area, but I couldn't see anything under the fur. It's on the top of his feet. If he's standing on all 4's, it's right above the joint to his foot.

I don't know if this has something to do with it or not, but he just went for some shots on Thursday. He has a tendency to be very allergic, but has shown no signs of an allergic reaction to the shots he had on Thurs.

Maybe it's just a coincidence, but could there be a correlation to the shots and his itchy feet, for just the last 4-5 days?

Any thoughts?

I wouldn't rule out the shots, but I would be more inclined to think it might be something like a grass allergy. Try washing his feet off when he comes in, & see if that helps.

Do his feet look red at all?

Chewing and excessive licking of feet is also the #1 sign of a food allergy. Have you recently changed what you feed? What food is he on at the moment? Check for corn in the ingredients and let me know http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

I'm wondering about corn too. Rudy was very itchy and had skin problems until I switched to a corn-free food. And food allergies like all allergies can just pop up. Corn can also be listed as corn gluten meal, corn byproducts, corn syrup, etc...

I don't think it's the corn...unless he's recently developed an allergy to his food in the last few days, because we haven't changed his food. He's on FRR, and has been for about 4 months.

I don't remember seeing his feet or legs being red. They didn't seem out of the ordinary at all, that was the strange part. I thought for sure that they'd be red or irritated.

Oh, he was outside a lot this weekend. We went away, up to a cabin in the mountains that my parents have. I checked him for ticks, but I didn't even think of an allergy to grass...or maybe something else...

I guess I should call the vet, just to make sure, huh?

well it does sound like a trip to the vet is in order. It can't be corn because FRR is corn-free (that's what I feed Rudy).

It definitely sounds like an external allergy to a weed or type of grass, maybe even poison oak, ivy, or sumac. Keep us posted!!!
