The emergency room vet that I took Reuben to last night said that he has two baby teeth that need to come out. They are beside his two long sharp teeth on the sides. The vet told be that it is common for dachshund not to lose those particular teeth. He also told me that if I do not have them removed it would cause Reuben to lose all of his permanent teeth in years to come. The procedure would require for Reuben to be completely knocked out because the teeth are in there very tight. The vet told me to talk to my regular vetinary about the situation. Anyone else ever heard or had this problem?

Yes, as a matter of fact. The same thing happened to Twix. She only had one tooth that didn't come out but she had to be put under to remove it. I wasn't very happy when it happened bacause I had mentioned it to my vet when I had her spayed and she said it should go ahead and fall out by itself. Well, it didn't and I had to pay for surgery again . Needless to say, I wasn't very happy about the situation. Fortunately, I get pretty good prices at my vet office. I don't know if this is of any help to you but Twix came through just fine. I couldn't even tell she had been put under when I picked her up. She was full of energy!!

Teresa, give me an estimate of the cost? If you don't mind. Just wondering how much $$$ to prepare for. Thanks Sue!

Oscar had a baby tooth pulled. It was $120 for the surgery. Our vet gave me an estimate first so I'd know the $ range. He was fine, just sleepy that night.

My Maggie had the same surgery - (2 baby teeth) - but we got a bargain $70 for the surgery and a flouride treatment. I dropped her off on my way to school in the morning and picked her up on my way home from school at 3:00. She was as perky as ever and although I fed her canned food that evening (in case her mouth was sore) she gobbled up the dry California Natural that I put down for Penny.

Sue, I'm thinking I paid about $50 but I could be wrong. It has been about 6 months or so since I had that done. I get a good deal at my vet because they have a health plan. I love the health plan because I get good discounts and free office visits. If you have a chance to get one I would recommend it. This one is sponsored by my vet office so I don't know what else it out there. I can explain more if you'd like me to.

I had to have Rudy's Removed too, but since we nuetered him a little later than most 8 mos, we were able to have both done at the same time. I paid $10 extra for the teeth extraction.

It looks like Roscoe will need it done too. I can see his perms starting to come through, but the baby teeth are still in there firmly. We will likely wait a little longer for his neutering too so our vet will pull them at the same time. Our vet does not like to do this until 8 mos old....

I spoke with my vet today and they said the cost would be $35-$40 for both teeth to be pulled. They said that they could not believe that they did not pull them when we had him neutered. They said they always try to do them then. Asked me why I did not mention it. Well, I did not know to ask that, duh? Anyway, I have an appointment for Reuben to have them pulled next Tuesday.

Sue and Reu,

Best of luck on Tuesday!! Twix and I will be thinking about you and sending some rayzzz. That is great about the cost. You should tell the vet it is their responsibility to ask you if you wanted to have those pulled when Reuben was neutered. Let me know how it goes. Will be waiting to hear from you two.

My little Chaucer is having a tooth that won't fall out yanked this morning. Of course, I'm totally paranoid and worried since he has to have anesthetic and I always worry he won't wake up....

Happy to report that my little Chaucer is just fine and is recovering from having not one, but THREE baby teeth yanked (YOWCH!), and should be ready to go home tonight. They gave him a pain killer they said, and he is still a little groggy, but there have been no complications.

Gidget goes for shots tonight (lucky girl) too...

Guess we'll have to lavish some extra spoiling (if such a thing is possible) on the poor little babies. Heh, good thing I let them watch Animal Planet this weekend, or I'd be really unpopular.

So your kids like Animal Planet as well. Frank loved the show on the shrew (I think it was on animal Planet). He sat first walked over to the TV and put his feet up on the stand almost pressing his nose to the screen and then sat and watch the shrew and her young for over ten minutes. I can't fall asleep with Animal Planet on if the Funniest Animals show is on. Frank will see something that gets him excited and leap out of bed running to the front door so he can go out and check on the action. Of course Tanner who is not impressed with the TV itself has to take off after his brother. I swear Frank thinks the TV is a window.

So do you have a can of food ready for tonight in case little Chaucer has a sore mouth and doesn't want to chew dry food?

Good luck,

Tom and the boys

How did Chaucer do? Reuben is home and doing well. He survived having two baby teeth pulled. Boy, do those things have a root to 'em. Reuben is resting now in the sun. I am just glad to have him home. Chaucer, Reuben told me to tell you that he hopes you are feeling back to normal real soon!!!

Well, the big C (and I do mean big--he's now up to 15.5 lbs.) is home, and a little snotty. I think his mouth hurts. He seemed really dopey last night, though this morning he was a bit more frisky. Didn't seem to excited about eating, but took the treats I offered and gobbled them down.

Lil Miss Gidget did fine too--with the help of some cookies, so she's got all her shots now, and can go out and play....YEAH!
