Hi everybody,
I am pretty new to the board as we just recently brought home Sabrina who is going to be 4 months old next week. She's been with us for a month now and we all love her to pieces. I was a bit skeptical about dachshunds because I always considered myself a " big dog person". My husband had a trini when he was 8 and always said that was his best dog he ever had. So, when our daughter asked for a puppy, my DH talked me into getting a dachsie. She won me over the very first day. When she curled up on my lap and fell asleep, my heart melted. We do have an english bulldog who is 7 years old now and I love him very much too. He has been a great dog for us and our daughter who put him through some rough times growing up. And he put up with it all.
Sorry for making it so long. But here is the reason I started this post. My daughter's best friend Caroline came over for a playdate after we got Sabrina. Her and her mother fell in love with her. We talked about Sabrina and dachsies every morning at school, etc. And to my surprise ( or maybe not ), they ended up getting a tiny dachsie puppy themself and told me that I started it all! Now Lauren ( mom ) is so in love with the breed and says she has no idea how they could live without a dachsie!!
So, I wanted to start a poll to see how many people here converted to dachsie lovers.
We have had GShepherd, Silky Terrier, Norwegian Elkhound, Loisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog, Beagle, Collie, Boxer and . . .
Dachsies, who are so addictive . . . well, that's all we'll ever have again. :D

I had always had mutts. When I met my husband he wanted a dachshund. He'd had one before and loved him. So we got Bandit, a dachshund cocker mix. Then we got Pebbles, a red smooth standard, to keep Bandit company. The rest is history! :)
We are hooked as well! When we owned our own business a gentleman came to our store with his dachsie puppy. We played with the pup while he shopped. That evening we went and purchased our first dachsie (mozart) he worked ath the store everyday with my husband. You would be shocked at how many people visited our store just to see mo. Now are pack has grown to 4 dachsies and 1 golden. We love our Golden she is a great dog but from here on out it is dachsies all the way. They are very special dogs!

In fact, he is our first pet ever and we've been married 18 years!! I wouldn't own anything else. Our friends have a Mini Named Molly and we fell in love for her and that why we have Charlie!

I grew up with dogs, mostly small toy fox terriors. My first experience with dachis was with a good friend. She had a minni SH red dachi by the name of Zimmy. She was a bright, loving little character and I got hooked. When we finally moved into our house we got our first little dachi, Marco and it's been a weiner house since!

I had a cocker growing up and my mom has one now that I helped raise as a puppy, so she is my other "little girl." My dad has one, too. I love cockers, but after having Tristan and now the girls, my husband and I really love these little wiener dogs!! They are so sweet and so happy.
Lotsadox, your dachshund-cocker mix sounds wonderful; what a great mix! :D

My family had numerous breeds of dogs as I was growing up. But, I never experienced the joy of owning a dachshund until about a year and a half ago. My husband went over to a friends house, who just so hapened to have gotten a brand new dachshie puppy. He fell in love with her gentle sweetness and of course those great big shovel paws. However, I was a little skeptical. I, too, was a "big dog person", our last dog which had passed away six months prior was a weimaraner/ lab mix. He was 85#s of big ol' Lap Baby. Never owning a dachshund, all I knew was the downsides to the breed-- stubborned, house-breaking issues, prone to back injury... With two active little boys, I was really kind of concerned. But, a co-worker of DH's had a litter of puppies and gave us one. And, from the moment I held my tiny, precious little Gidget in my arms, I was hooked. Now we have 4, two being ours, and two being fosters. There are times I miss having a "big dog", so I cannot say dachshunds will be the only breed of dog I'll ever own. But I can say I'll always have at least one... or two... or three :D

I had lots of different dogs growing up (busy rd, broken chains= get another dog:crying: )
On my own I had mostly smallish dogs, but gave away my Pomeranian when I bought an upstairs condo.
For 10 years no dogs, no animal hair and quite happy, but...
I'd always wanted another little dog. Husband had a bird dog growing up and that was all. He wasn't sold for years on a pet, since we sort of "shared" the neighbor's cat. I didn't care too much for that. I talked him into not waiting until the old, diabetic cat died for a mini-dachshund (then the cat died when the pups were two weeks old---I didn't mean it!) Fortunately now the neighbor LOVES Ruben (and likes Trenyce).
We actually researched breeds and the dachshund was the "best fit" for our lifestyle. We went into this with our heads, and have now totally lost our hearts to our TWO. :facelick:
Oh, I only wanted one, but you don't need me to tell you ALL the reasons we decided on two. :sarcastic
Now we wonder how we ever lived without them. Sure I don't much care for the "mad tinkler" moments, but that's what a "Little Green" cleaner is for, and I miss sleeping past 5:30 on weekends, but oh do I look forward to those puppy kisses every morning and evening! :raz:
We talk about that smooth b/t joining us, but lord help us get two to walk on a leash before we get that third.
Did someone say addicting???

For the first 16 years of my life, my family had a spitz mix. She was a great dog, but shedded so badly that my mom wanted a short-haired dog, so a friend gave her their mini dachshund when they had to move away. It has been dachshunds and dachs mixes ever since.

My family has had dachsie's since long before I was born. But with my sister and I we've added to the fun along the way. We've had poodles, yorkies, boxers, schnauzers, a rottie mix, and 2 shep. mixes and I have to say my favorites are dachshunds and the 2 shepherd mixes. My first big dog was Mike the shepherd/wolf mix who went to the bridge in 1990, he was wonderful and he loved our dachshunds. Now we have the Case Man and he is so good and sweet and smart. I will always have a dachshund or probably 2 and there will always be room for a shepherd mix too.

doxies now.
I have had other breeds as well, but I just love the doxie breed the best.
I swear they think they are human.

Rudy's mom - MI

Before we got Rudy my husband and I hadn't had a dog in 15 years and if we ever decided we wanted one it wasn't going to be one of "those" weiner dogs.:D But Gary's brother was trying to convince us that we needed a dog and that the dachsies were the greatest. He took us over to the breeders house to see a puppy (I think he wanted to see it more than us) and my husband said "We'll take him" I said, "What? We haven't been even looking for a dog, we need to talk this over!" It was Sat. and we had to tell the breeder the next day if we wanted the pup. I always sleep like a log but that night I stayed awake the Whole Night thinking about doggie things and whose going to watch this dog when we travel. Gary's brother said we'll watch him any time you need us to (which he knew that we would end up so crazy over him that we'd take him every where we went)
So after laying awake all night I decided No, I don't think I'm ready for a dog. My husband had decided the opposite. So, I said OK, but my heart really wasn't in to it. Well, to end this long story we both are absolutely crazy over our dear little Rudy boy. He is the best dog ever in so many ways! We love our little dachshund and can't bear to think of being without him. They are a wonderful breed, so full of love and cuddles and cuteness. I would like to have a few more.:D Which is saying quite alot for someone who didn't like weiner dogs in the beginning.

My parents have always had dogs of different breeds...beagles a poodle, dachsie, mutt, anther mutt then back to dachsie. I loved all the dogs that I was around for, but my most favorite are the dachsies. After Ben crossed the bridge last August, I swore I'd never have another dog. Then I met Buddy and my life has never been the same! Now with the addition of Heidi (who by the way is not full bread, she's part beagle) I am hooked. I know that Andrew would like a big dog when we get a house some day and I'm not opposed...but my heart will forever be faithful to my dachsies!!

My family has had black labradors, yellow labradors, rotweilers, german shepards, Springer Spaniels and mutts and so on.
Modem and Molly have been extremely fun. When I move out of my parents home which probably won't be soon I plan on having a doxie and maybe after being more financially set add a large dog or maybe another doxie

I got my first dachsie when I was 4. That was 50 years ago (oh my!). Have had dachsies ever since and now we have 6. However, I have had several large dogs as well. We have a border collie and a queensland heeler as well right now. I like having a large dog. We live in a very rural area. Our border collie absolutely hates coyotes and she keeps them away. A constant threat to dachsies.
Dachsies will always be a part of our life.

I started out thinking that Dachshunds were the only dogs for me after Otto. I got Buddy be default, and he's caused me to fall in love with bigdogs too. Then I fell in love with Dolly, a dachshund mix and Izzy the Wartzburg Whiz king (terrier poodle). Breed means nothing, I love all dogs and their personalities. Of course I'm partial to dachshunds, but I could fall in love with any dog when they look at me just the right way, or sing to me from thier cage in the pound. Shoot, officially, I'm a cat person. People at the dog park are always commenting "You've got 5 dogs and a cat tattoo?"

Well I'd like to carry on having Dachshunds but I'd like other breeds too, so I voted the last option.
